First love, by Valerie Allen is a sweet short story of how children in kindergarten feel when they experience their first heartbreak. It made me think back to when my daughter was in first grade and head over heels in love with a boy named Patrick. Apparently, he was the heartthrob in her school and all the girls swooned over him. Needless to say, my daughter was heartbroken when he invited another girl to his birthday party instead of her. We still laugh about it till this day and wonder whatever became of her first love, Patrick. This is a lovely story to teach children how to handle their emotions at a young age. I think it would make a wonderful edition to a social-emotional book series for young children. 5 stars for First Love.
