Rate this book
Now captain of her own pirate ship, Jules of Landfall faces ambushes by Mage assassins and threats from Mechanics who can’t decide whether to kill her or try to use her for their own ends. The Emperor has made her an offer he doesn’t think she can refuse, but Jules wants nothing to do with that gilded cage. Now, the Emperor’s forces are redoubling their efforts to capture her.

The free ships of the pirates have never gathered around any single leader, but when the Mechanics seek to limit the power of the Empire, Jules realizes it offers her a means to grow the strength of the free people escaping the Emperor’s grasp. Gaining access to the strange Mechanic weapons known as “revolvers”, she marshals her forces in an unprecedented attempt to capture an Imperial settlement.

Ultimately, Jules must play the three greatest powers in the world against each other, in a desperate gambit to survive.

Empress of the Endless Sea book 2. Spoilers for the first book. Another of the prequel series to Pillars of Reality, and there are a few points here that make more sense in what they set up for the main series.

Jules is now captain of the pirate ship. There are Mechanics who still think they control her, Mages who try to kill her (and the revelation of rocs, not named in this volume), a proposition from the Emperor, attempts to explore that falsify maps, and more.

Over the past few weeks, I sailed through (pun intended) the three books in the Empress of the Endless Sea series by Jack Campbell.

It was a swift voyage. The pages almost turning themselves. A great story with an exciting end to the last book in the series. Overall a truly enjoyable swashbuckling pirate adventure. I can't recommend Jack Campbell's books enough.

Relatable main character
The books revolve around the life of pirates fighting not only for loot but to free people from imperial rule. Read this series if you like smoothly written books, full of naval engagements, and discovery of new lands, all centered around the any-person hero, Jules of Landfall. She is a lieutenant in training when we first meet her. A very likable young woman with a hard center. The sort of person who wants to do the right thing, but welcomes a fight.

I think a lot of readers will relate to Jules quite easily, respect her sense of decency, and admire her commitment and drive.

Read the first book first.

This book makes me curious how this world came about. It has an empire and two guilds and the protagonist who is foretold to have a daughter of her line defeat them.

One guild is the Mechanics who have a couple of steamships, revolvers, and extreme arrogance. But we see that they are getting less powerful over time. Another guild is the mages, who seem like science fiction psi mages.

The empire wants to breed her, the Mechanics want to use her, and the Mages want to kill her. She becomes a pirate captain and a good fighter. (I'm a relatively small man. Size matters in that kind of fight even if we want women to be as capable as men).

I will get the 3rd novel and hope that we learn more.

I like this series so far. This book ended on a hell of a cliffhanger so I'm a little irritated, but satiated by the knowledge I have the next book. If I had to wait for the next book to publish I would have been mad!

Loved this audiobook! Took me a while to get into it because I preferred the previous narrator's rendition for Pillars of Reality/Daughter of Dragons series but she did a good job. I enjoy Jules character and her crew. Looking forward to book 3!

Left it in a cliffhanger. Going to have to read book three to find out how it ends.

Not happy about the quasi cliffhanger, but once again thoroughly enjoyed this book. Plenty of tension with enough relaxing of same to maintain interest.

Punchier than book one
Book two in this series is a bit better than book one.
While book one meandered around in search of a plot, book two seems to gain some traction.

The author's love of the sea is clearly evident and a bit infectious. When her ship ventured into the unknown west, it had me transfixed.

3.5 stars. OK continuation. The story progresses, but slowly and with a lot of wandering.
