As a DGD fan, this was a ridiculously fun read. Nearly every panel was packed with song references (even Secret Band nods) and the characters that we’ve seen in music videos are now fully fleshed out (I’m too lazy to make an Elder Goose joke here). The odd juxtaposition of whimsical Saturday morning cartoon-esk pencils with a surprisingly dark and violent plot took a little getting used to, but is a bizarre mashup so on brand for DGD. Jon said in the Tree City Sessions 2 preshow that he’d like to do another graphic novel. I would so devour more of this content. I feel like the lore could go so much further and I am here for it. If the next volume were to incorporate more of the concepts from the art of Mattias Adolffson, I’d love the next DGD graphic novel to feature the animal versions of the band.

but maybe like 2.5 ⭐

welcome to dgd cringefest city. I can see über fans getting a kick out of this one as it hits every mark that it should for what it is. it is, after all, a graphic novel comprising 15(??) years of a discography into something cohesive. I'm not taking it too seriously for that reason.

overall the story is giving 'too close to home' where everything is a reference therefore nothing is surprising or unique (aside from dave and what we're telling him, which was unexpected). but again, THAT'S the point so 🤷🏻‍♀️

anywho. I read it, it didn't scratch the spot for me. some of my 💲 hopefully went to the band otherwise I fear I only supported the nile which I'm not so sure about. & I think I may need to do a re-read to catch all the references to flesh out the playlist I created (acceptance speech era of robot is hands down my favourite and I'm enjoying listening through it now)

edit: if there is another comic in the future I'd love to see illustrations from mattias adolfsson. that'd be cool

A mot of fun if you are a fan of the band… maybe a bit much if you aren’t. If definitely feels like a part 1… and I’d be down for part 2.

Very interesting read, and great for a Dance Gavin Dance fan. Love the concept and all the connections it makes with the bands music throughout the years.

I’m not sure what to say about this.
The mythology was intense and weird and cool but just not my thing.
I did not like the main characters but was intoxicated by the way THE ROBOT drew me in. It was well drawn and beautifully lettered but again, not my style.

Art by Ian McGinty was very much in the vein of Rob Guilllory’s fantastic work on CHEW.

Fun, fast-paced story arc that left me wanting more!
