That's hockey player code 101. But, then again, I don't play by the rules. In this small town hockey players are bigger than movie stars. I can have any puck bunny that I want. I don't need to go after my right-winger's sister. Even though she makes my heart hammer and those dimples render me unable to form sentences... And, everyone knows that hockey players and figure skaters don't mix. I have to focus on one thing, and one thing only, and that's going pro. My coach has even hired a power skating specialist to take my skating to the next level. I can't let a pretty girl from the wrong side of the tracks derail me now.
Sparks fly and heads butt when superstar forward Kane discovers the identity of his new power skating coach...
Not a Player is a small town romance sprinkled with a little bit of hockey, a lot of skinny dipping, and one too many toe-picks. This book can be read as a stand-alone or as book one in the Laketown Hockey Series.
The relationship between Kane and his dad The boat moments between Jessie and Kane
Things I didn’t like and that lead to this rating:
I found the characters to be immature.
The Hero said something along the lines of “ I don’t drink and drive because a DUI could ruin my life “ mmmmh WHAT!! you don’t drink and drive because it’s dangerous and you can kill someone!! Not because it may ruin your precious hockey carreer.
The H threw a fit because the heroine was supposed to help him with his skating and “how is a girl supposed to teach me how to skate”
Their relationship went from zero to a hundred in a matter of pages. They had their cute moments but it was very meh.
The heroine wanted to give everything up for the Hero and that’s BS . Why is this so popular? You don’t have to give up your dreams and what you worked so hard for for a guy!! This is not 1920 where you can’t have both.
The fact that Dylan ( her brother) made Kane lie to her to protect her is another wtf moment.

Made it about 1/3 of the way through this book before the previously great male lead crumpled into a sexist puddle of his own fragile masculinity. That was about the time he stated that no woman alive could possibly teach his twenty one year old self anything about skating and then threw a hissy fit and ran away because “how could he ever make the national league when he was out skated by a girl!” So. Much. Whining. Also called her a bitch. He seriously went from hero to zero on the sexism scale in like 1 chapter. Also, is it just me that’s annoyed with people patting themselves on the back for not driving drunk because a “dui could ruin my life!” The reason not to drive drunk is so you don’t kill people, asswipe. Anyway. I stopped reading after we discovered he was a dick. Didn’t seem like much point after that. Shame, because it had promise until then.
This. This is the exact type of book i don’t like at all. Bland. A story where the heroine gives her future and everything because suddenly a man became her whole and only happiness. I hate also how the brother and the hero did something behind her back because it was ‘the best for her’, while hurting her deeply in the process. It annoys me. I couldn’t finish this, because i love reading about strong heroines that are rational. I love reading about women that does not rely their happiness on what they feel for a boy, even if it’s love. Its NOT healthy to depend on someone like that. She was about to blow her whole life and future (HER FREAKING CARREER) because she was in love with that dude. Hate that.

I’m not usually the one to quit on a romance - unless it has some over-the-top ridiculous things happening (so mostly with dark romances). This book of course isn’t dark, but it did have stupid, irritable, and SO UNDERWHELMING sex scenes. I’m sorry, but with romances with these covers, I’m expecting an erotica - and what did I get? Literally nothing.
The first red flag with this story was editing issues - not using full quotation marks for dialogue (just the ‘), the occasional non-capitalization at the beginning of sentences (seriously - that’s the first thing you learn in kindergarten), and just the overall jerkiness of sentences. It was all so annoying. But I was going to look past those issues - that is until everything else came about.
The story is a hockey/ice skating premise, which is fun and I do love a sport romance. And this book for sure reminded me of that one Netflix show with the brother and sister that do both of these sports (cuz that’s literally in this story too). I only watched one episode of that, but the vibes were the same. Anyway, I do love having an actual plot to the romances I read besides the actual, you know, romance. It’s just when (and this is the first book in which this has happened) the plot is 99% the focus for at least half the book, then you’re introducing some sexual tension and romantic things a little after that, but then having the two characters already like each other enough to start dating and doing sexy things. That all happened within the following 10% and I’ll say it again, it was sooooooo underwhelming. Because there was no build-up! Or enough tension! And these two characters didn’t even discuss to us as an audience about their feelings and attracted-ness toward the other - at least enough so for me to warrant my excitement for them to get together. I just - ughhhhhh, it was so frustrating. Not to mention, the “hero” mentioned he was starting to fall in love with her and no matter how instant the love is, in a romance, I’m giddy when I read that. For this one? I cringed and I legit did not believe him for a single second.
And then! The actual “steaminess” (like I said, don’t even hold your breath if you’re wanting something like I did) was of course, non-existent. And look, I am okay with a romance not being erotic or raunchy. But when you have a typical erotica cover and scenes where there is vulgar-ness and some erotic things, you can’t just end it there! You gotta go through with it - or least some form of telling us what is happening between them! For example, their first kiss. It was a little more and tension was brewing because they stopped. Then when they got alone, not much happened again but you knew they wanted to. And then all of a sudden, we are thrown into the next week where they have been “dating” and apparently have gotten a little frisky - without ever reading it ourselves! And their first actual sex scene, we get to be a part of (woot!)...and it’s like 4 paragraphs long to which it ends before the actual sex happens (and the paragraphs before that were just them getting undressed pretty much). Afterward, I was like - HUH?!
So, after all that I’ve been peeved about, I just decided to skim through the rest of the story and see if the rest was even worth my time. And nope! It is not. Literally no other explicitness or vulgarity happen (so basically no hot romance things) AND the “hero” cheats!!!!!! I caught that within a chapter of him telling that to the heroine and I just could not believe it. Granted, I am missing lots of context and it could be he lied or something - but still, what the f*ck?
I am so completely pissed off because I was looking forward to another hockey romance and I was enjoying the vibes of this one right off the bat - but it is hardly more than a wannabe erotica (with a misleading cover) with a whiny (and kinda sexist) hero, and just overall a bad taste in my mouth.
This is the first book in A.J. Wynter’s Laketown Hockey Series. I really enjoyed it. You get a feel for the small town but also the big dreams. Jessie is an Olympic caliber figure skater and she’s tasked with helping get Kane achieve his goal of getting into the NHL. She’s also a teammates sister. There’s sparks, heat and so much chemistry and tension. They way these characters interact really draws you in and keeps you reading. I can’t wait for the next book!
I received an advanced copy of this book from the author and am leaving a voluntary honest review.
Sparks of all kinds fly between sporting stars in great new series
Both are at home on the ice but Jessie and Kane do not exactly get off to an auspicious start. Feelings, of course, soon get in the way but so many things could conspire against them. From different sides of the tracks, Jessie has grown up in small Laketown, while Kane is a city boy. Jessie works hard to finance her skating dreams while Kane is definitely not short of a bob or two. And even more frustratingly, Jessie is definitely off limits as the sister of Kade's teammate, Dylan. I loved the characters of Jessie and Kane. In spite of their beginning when they are thrown together by unconventional circumstances, they gradually learn more about each other and develop a genuine connection, which leads to deeper feelings. They are both good people and each has a desire for the other to succeed which leads to a decision that has enormous consequences for them. This was a flying start to A.J.'s new series, with plenty of characters introduced who will undoubtedly feature in their own books, Dylan, Mike and Leo being my guesses to start off with. If you enjoyed A.J.'s Chance Rapids series, you will definitely want to read this one too. A love story on ice, with families and friends to help or interfere, a feel-good contemporary romance that is the perfect way to pass a few enjoyable hours.
Jessie & Kane live in a small town but live in different worlds. He's grown up with money & is a rising hockey star waiting for his big break into the NHL. She's a struggling figure skater & needs money to return to the skating academy to achieve her goal of skating professionally in the Olympics. Kane's coach hires a power skater instructor for Kane so he can be even better during hockey games. Unbeknownst to Kane, his instructor is a "she" in figure skates! Plus, she's a teammate's sister & definitely off-limits! How are these two going to work around in acting out their feelings towards each other without her brother finding out?
A really good story to begin the new series. Jessie & Kane may be at opposite ends of the financial spectrum but love has no restrictions on how rich or poor the right mate is for the other person. The true test is if they can make it work & have their HEA. I'm looking forward to reading more of A.J. Wynter's writings.
I volunteered to read this ARC & leave an honest review.
Jessie was a champion figure skater hoping to make it to the olympics but had no money for training so she was doing unauthorized workouts in the early morning at the local professional hockey rink. Kane, a professional hockey player saw her there changing early one morning and realized her brother played on his team. When Kane needed some help with his skating the team ended up hiring Jessie to help him and they became closer. Will Jessie make it to the Nationals competition and will Kane move up to the NHL team? Will Jesse and Kane be able to work out their personal issues and become a couple?
I give this story 4.5 stars. I enjoyed reading about 2 people dedicated to do well in their professions while trying to handle a developing relationship. This well written story gives us insight into their lives and the sacrifices they would make for their careers and each other. The epilogue was nice and gives a hint about other possible books. I received an ARC from the author and I am voluntarily leaving this review.
I had some issues with this book just on the surface. All the characters were immature, except for the figure skating coach and Fitzy's dad haha! Seriously, tho, The MMC was a sexist butthead, and the FMC ended up a borderline doormat putting her goals and life on hold for a guy. Not to mention, the relationship went from 0 to 60 in a matter of pages. The build-up and tension was nonexistent. They eventually made the right decisions and ended up a bit better than where they started, but at the end of the day, if Dylan is the one making sense, there's something wrong haha!
I loved the premise - small town figure skater coaches hockey player, they fall for each other. But there was just too much "fuss." I guess is the best way to put it. It did make me laugh, and I liked some of the references. I think I'll keep reading the series just to see who else ends up coupling up. I do wanna see who ends up landing Dylan!
Not a Player by A.J. Wynter is an sport romance story of Kane and Jessie.Kane is a hockey player,he play hard and party hard. a son of a retired NHL.Jessie is a figure skater practicing hard aiming for national and to qualified for olympic.when her parents died in the accident its become dificult for them, they work pay check to pay check to get by and to save for her returned to the academy for her training when Kane need a trainer for him to skate good and fast his coach friend recommend her prodigy and that is Jessie, she also do her practice in the Arena early in the morning for free,no one know except the maintenance and now Kane by accident. a story filled with passion, drama, struggle, love and steam. a great story that will tugged at your heartstring, well done! I am volunteering to leave a review for an ARC of this book.
We don’t even get a name exchange until almost 30%, which is way too late when the book’s barely 266 pages. At 100 pages in, they’ve still barely hung out—so unless the author was planning a miracle sprint in the back half, the pacing math just didn’t add up.
Then there’s the logic gymnastics. A coach needing his player to improve skating doesn’t hire a hockey specialist—no, he hires the grieving figure skater girl for . Sure, Jan. Add in the “magical summer job at a food truck is what keeps her Olympic dream alive” subplot, and I couldn’t stop hearing Caleb Hammer in my head yelling: “SELL 👏 THE 👏 HOUSE 👏.”
I came for hockey spice, got figure skating loopholes and a romance that didn’t even lace up its skates until halftime. False spice advertising is the ultimate penalty. Two minutes in the box, permanent DNF from me.
Jessie is a figure skater who just moved back to her small hometown because her parents were killed in a drunk driving accident. She and her hockey player brother are each working 2 jobs to meet expenses and get her back to this exclusive figure skating academy, so she has a chance at the Olympic team. She meets and falls for her brother's hockey teammate, Kane Fitzgerald, a rich guy. Sparks fly; they hide their budding romance from everyone because it is forbidden by the team bro code. Kane makes life-altering decisions without consulting Jessie, but they eventually get their HEA. The ending leaves the author leeway to continue their story, so this may actually be an HFN (happy for now). Great book that is well worth reading.
Beautiful and simple romance. It's a sweet romance, simple, with a few twists. The story, although it does have a few melodramatic moments, is still quite cute and a little hot. Jessie is a skater who had to temporarily quit her training for the Olympics following the death of her parents and lack of money. Her brother is on the local hockey team and is struggling to recover from it too. It's in this atmosphere that she meets Kane, a teammate of her brother. She vowed to herself never to date either a hockey player or a rich son, and Kane is both. However, their situation takes a turn when they discover each other despite their social differences. I should start that I read light to very dark romance and her his is definitely light.
Enjoyed this book, I did, but something was missing and I'm not sure what. The build up between out two main characters was nice but then the middle seemed rushed...
Kane doesn't come across as a player... With the ladies at least. He comes across quite the gent. Jessie our figure skater says she would never see a hockey player but you never know why? In fact I'm not even sure how old anyone is...
It's a sweet story with a little angst - like I said I enjoyed it and I will get round to reading one or two others in the series of their blurb catches my attention... But I'm in no rush
I really enjoyed this first book of this new series and look forward to the other books. Jessie and Kane are from opposite sides of the track. Kane has seen Jessie and there was an immediate attraction, but he soon discovers she is the sister of a teammate. They eventually decide to act on the attraction and hide it from people while falling for each other. To make a dream come true, one must sacrifice the other without them knowing why they are doing it. In the end they do get their happily ever after, as well as their dreams. I voluntarily agreed to receive an ARC of this book for an honest review.
This is a great story with lots going on! Jessie and her brother lost their father in an accident with a drunk driver. He’s on the hockey team and she’s an Olympic Figure skater and they need the insurance money to further her way. Kane is a superstar player on the hockey team and has seem Jessie and would like to go out with her but the rules are you don’t go out with a fellow players sister! But they try going out with out anyone knowing but things are happening that may end them. This storyline will keep you reading until the end to find out what will happen! I voluntarily reviewed an Advanced Reader Copy of this book.
It was good nothing too angsty but it feel short for me at the end. The last 10% all happened so fast and made no sense. He tells her he cheated instead of having a real conversation about her dreams. Her brother was wrong for doing what he did and then she just forgave them both in a matter of minutes.
There were some plot holes. Like did she go to the Olympics and did he get drafted it didn’t feel over but it was. Ill read the next one and hopefully these characters are also in it. I know the brother has a story but its not the like 4th in the series so I am confused.
Enjoyable and well written. No great depth to the story but still a fun read with likeable characters. It ticked all the boxes and there was a decent if predictable story arch. I felt that there could have been more here with a few story threads that just didn’t go any distance and which could have lifted this from a “light read” to a “sucked you in”. The climax was a little contrived and the finale felt slightly lame. All that said, it was a fun, feel good read. If you’re looking for a book to while away a few hours without too much emotional engagement or need to concentrate then this works well.
I really enjoyed this book. My heart hurt for Jessie and her brother, but she was a strong heroine. At first I wasn't too fond of Kane and his attitude towards Laketownies but he did redeem himself and he truly loved Jessie. I did not like Jessie's best friend Paige, who needs friends like that. And thank God, that witch Tiffany got what she had coming to her. Overall it was a sweet story set in a small town. I recommend it if you like sweet, small town romance with a little heat. I received an ARC for an honest review.
I received an advance copy of this book for my HONEST review.
I admit this story definitely went places I did not expect as I have read a few sport themed novels. It was more in depth than most which kept my attention more. Therefore, led me to wanting to finish the story to see what happens with the main characters. This is the first book in a new series but I am certainly looking forward to the other titles.
This book gives you drama, friendship, frat style craziness, support and love. Even though a part of a series, in the works, each book is set to be a standalone.
Jessie, an elite figure skater, is surprised when Kane, a minor league hockey player, comes into the locker room when she is changing. As the story progresses Karma takes a bite, luck seems to turn back, and just when everything looks good a choice could either separate them or bring them closer together. A.J. Wynter’s Not A Player is a wonderful hockey themed romance read. I really connected with the characters and will look forward to reading more about Dylan, Paige, Tanner, and Leo.
Enjoyed reading this, love the pace and build-up. For a playboy jock, Kane was a gentlemen until....he wasn't. I love ice skating so I was enticed and how they met was so hilarious that I was instantly captivated. I didn't really like how their relationship pitfall played out because I felt that although Jessie is a strong character, she'd already experienced enough sadness and the recovery from their pitfall seemed rushed with an abrupt ending. I received a free copy without obligation and am voluntarily reviewing.
