Jennifer Hartmann resides in northern Illinois with her own personal romance hero and three children. When she is not writing angsty love stories, she is likely pondering all the ways she can break your heart and piece it back together again. She enjoys sunsets (because mornings are hard), bike riding, traveling, bingeing Buffy the Vampire Slayer reruns, and that time of day when coffee gets replaced by wine. She loves tacos. She also really, really wants to pet your dog.
After inhaling 'Still beating' I quick smart one clicked this one, this didn't hit me in the heart like my previous read by this author, but in saying that I still really enjoyed it, a slow burn which kept on giving out the feels. This author has fast become one I'll be keeping an eye on, her story telling pulls you in so effortlessly, yet another unique, unputdownable read..
I'm slowly working my way through all of Jennifer Hartmann's books and though it's not my favorite of hers, it's still a solid read. It was a bit slow paced at times, and I liked the romance but I wanted more romance. This was heavy on the suspense, not quite as heavy on the romance, but good.
This was the second book I read from this author and both books were very well written. Although Aria was the first book that I didn’t enjoy as much as I wanted to, I really wanted to read another book by J. Hartmann because of her writing.
Claws and Feathers had a very intriguing blurb, was a suspenseful romance read and the characters were very interesting. The plot unfolded with a very slow pace, and the story was unhurriedly establishing the characters and the development of their relationship.
I am really sad to say that I was struggling to keep reading and eventually dnf it at 45%.
This was just awful. Trauma bonded, beyond co-dependent, delusional people who have all the conveniences of ignoring consequences… blah blah blah, barf barf barf.
The plot didn’t even make sense. It was so fucking surface-level. All the characters sucked.
Jennifer can write no wrong!! From heartbreaking angst to a psychological thriller, she's masterfully paints a beautiful love story on the canvas of tragedy. You should experience many smouldering moments of passion but be prepared to shed tears too. There's broken relationships looking for re connection and some connected relationships who are at the brink of breakage. Either way, everybody present in this book gets hurt and I could do nothing but open my arms to hug them close. She painfully crafts Abigail Stone and immediately burdens her with a huge closet full of skeletons.
"a damaged trauma victim with PTSD and more baggage than those luggage carousels at the airport. "
First bar encounter with a hot cop/bartender, Cooper has her flustered and somewhat pissed, so she scoot out & vanishes into the night with no trace. Cooper is so taken with her, he moves heaven, earth and van to find her and rescue her in his solid arms. The post traumatic stress becomes the third entity in their so-called- relationship which is a non-starter from the get go, despite Cooper-the-trooper's Valiant efforts.
"Cooper McAllister was the best of the best. He was a hero. He was her hero. But they were too different. He was too good. Cooper was the light to her dark. The petals to her thorns. The laughter to her tearful heart. Some things simply weren’t meant to be. "
Like I said, it tugs and pulls at all your heart strings till the forlorn tune of unrequited love makes you weep. You can't keep good writer hidden forever and I forsee in the immediate future, the meteoric rise of this writing phenomenon who casts absolute pearls of soulful words for us readers. I can't but just stare at their shiny surface and read & re-read them again. And the ending is UNLIKE ANYTHING I've ever read. A girl who accepts her darkness and makes it her companion. I'm dreading to imagine what her/their future would be like
"I am seated between the two men, feeling them pull and tug me in opposite directions. They are my dark and my light. My black and my white. My claws and my feathers. "
Absolutely marvellous book written straight from the heart landed straight into mine 5 stars for all the shades of Gray Follow me on: Email🌻 Bookbub 🌻 Twitter🌻 Instagram🌻 Blog🌻 Facebook🌻 Amazon 🌻
I absolutely loved Claws and Feathers! Jennifer Hartmann has a unique ability to craft characters that pull you in, making it impossible to put the book down. This book is about a police officer and a kidnapping victim. Despite the fact that their relationship is forbidden, the connection between them is undeniable, and they can’t help but fall in love. Cooper is a dream man: “𝙄 𝙡𝙤𝙫𝙚 𝙮𝙤𝙪, 𝘼𝙗𝙗𝙮. 𝙏𝙝𝙚𝙧𝙚’𝙨 𝙣𝙤𝙩𝙝𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙮𝙤𝙪 𝙘𝙤𝙪𝙡𝙙 𝙚𝙫𝙚𝙧 𝙙𝙤 𝙩𝙤 𝙢𝙖𝙠𝙚 𝙢𝙚 𝙨𝙩𝙤𝙥 𝙡𝙤𝙫𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙮𝙤𝙪.”
In December 2023, the book was remastered into first-person POV. I think it is underrated and deserves much more attention. You'll find angst, suspense, mystery, and banter all wrapped into a captivating story!
𝘛𝘳𝘰𝘱𝘦𝘴: ✓slow burn ✓romantic suspense ✓small town ✓cop/victum ✓forbidden love
This was my third book by Jennifer Hartman and I am so, so, so glad it wasn’t my first because it is not an adequate representation of how incredibly talented she is!! CLAWS & FEATHERS was not terrible, it’s a decent story, but it’s slooooooow and just mediocre with nothing extraordinarily impressive about it. If this had been my first book by Hartmann, I wouldn’t have read any more since my theory is that life is too short to settle for mediocre books. And if I never read another book by Jennifer Hartman, I would have been at a huge loss because STILL BEATING and LOTUS were two of the best written, most innovative books I’ve ever read in my entire life!!! Honestly, it feels like this book was written by an entirely different author compared to those two books! Hartmann is capable of MUCH, MUCH, MUCH more than what we see in CLAWS & FEATHERS, so if this was your first book by her, I’m telling you, take a risk and try one of the other two books I mentioned by her. If you are like me, you probably won’t want to give her another chance, but I swear, it will be so worth it!!!!
"Life isn't black and white, It's gray. It will always be gray. Remember that."
Abby and Cooper's love story was a bit unique. They were connected from the very beginning, from the very first moment they locked eyes at the small town bar in Crows Peak; However, neither of them knew just how connected they would become. An unfortunate event bound these characters together, in more ways than one, that ultimately challenged their desire for one another. The more time they were around each other, the harder it became to walk away. A romance that teeters on that very thin line of forbidden and good-natured. A cop and his damsel in distress. A victim and her knight in shining armor.
Abby is such an intense character. She is no stranger to loss. She lost her parents when she was young, which then, her brother walked out on her, leaving her to be raised by her Nana, who unfortunately passes away. She's been through lot, and she tries to navigate it all by herself, until she meets Cooper McAllister, who shows her that it's okay to not be okay. He carries her burdens when they become too much for her to handle. “Cooper was the light to my dark. The petals to my thorns. The laughter to my tearful heart.” I love the mental health representation in this book. Abby's character is so deep and complex, and I appreciate that JH didn't gloss over it, or just find some "solution" for it, and put it off to the side. Abby's mental health is a huge part of her story, and you see a lot of it, especially in the end. I love how it ended. It shows what a real, continuous battle depression truly is.
Cooper is undeniably that person you can lean on for anything, and he'll show up, no questions asked. He has an hard exterior but is really a big softy. He cares for people, and feels so deeply. He's a beautiful representation of the light at the end of the tunnel. His intentions were so pure when it came to Abby. He wanted to protect her, carry her burdens, and make her as happy as possible, all while trying to keep a professional distance, due to the circumstances. “If you ever feel like that again, please call me. I’ll come over. You’re not alone.” The more time they spent together, the stronger their connection was, and it was clear from the very beginning that they were meant for each other.
This had a really great plot. It's deep and thought provoking. It kept me on my toes, trying to piece together the mystery of "Cappy"; However, it was very hard to do, because Jennifer Hartmann left no crumbs. No clues into who he was or why he did what he did. It became even more complicated when you figured out that you didn't have the whole story, and why you didn't have the whole story. It's truly crazy how your brain can protect you from past trauma. This psychological romance will have you guessing until the very end!
If you enjoyed this, you'll love Jennifer Hartmann's other novel "Irreversible". "Claws and Feathers" walked, so "Irreversible" could run!!!
I’ll start this by saying I’ve become such a fan of Jennifer Hartmann and her writing. She has a way of getting you to feel every emotion while flipping through the pages. You’ll laugh, cry, and enjoy every moment. It’s inevitable. ❤️
This book was no different. While it’s clear it’s one of her earlier works as it’s a bit rougher around the edges than the Still Beating series, it was still filled with everything you’ve come to love from a JH novel - the love, the sorrow, the mystery, the pure raw emotion.
A couple issues bothered me enough to dock a star. It’s not perfect, but nothing/no one is. It’s pretty damn good though! Stop reading now I’d you don’t wanna know what docked the rating point (which could be potential spoilers)….

I really wish we’d gotten more insight into Abby’s abduction. It felt so skimmed over. It happened then it was over within a few pages it felt like. It was an awkward transition that could have been explored more for a better & more fluid storyline.
Secondly, it’s rare that I can say I genuinely hate a character BUT I hate Maya! Why was her license not revoked? What she did was inexcusable and extremely unprofessional!! 😡 As someone who strongly supports mental health awareness and the use of tools such as therapy, this bothers me sooooooo badly!
This is my least favorite romance from Jennifer Hartmann. While I loved the romance, I found this book soo boring. That may be because there are other books by this author that I love so much more with a similar premise.
Started off ok then became decent then worked itself up to really enjoyable in the second half. The slow burn really crept up on me and finally had me buying the romance. I was finally invested by the halfway mark. The emotional and sexual tension was great. The hero Cooper was a beta sweetheart and the heroine Abby was a mix of vulnerable heart and messy actions who is quick to anger and react which frustrated me at times. I didn't think she'd win me over after a very stupid stunt she pulled but character growth, accountability and self awareness is always a big plus for me and goes a long way. Characters working through stuff and working on themselves is great when done right. The suspense angle was pretty good and had you guessing who had kidnapped the heroine. It's not a JH book if it doesn't have a shocking twist of some kind so you are holding your breath waiting for the other shoe to drop. Not her strongest or most memorable work but still not bad. Also, I really need Jennifer Hartmann to cut it out with the ominous dark-toned epilogues. I don't understand her morbid fascination in doing this? Her stories are already packed with heavy emotions and characters dealing with serious trauma/demons of some kind, can you let your couple's hard-earned HEA just be? This does not have a sad ending FYI but I didn't like that last little curveball she threw at readers in the epilogue about the heroine's mental health. It's literally like dousing your readers with a bucket of cold water. Not a great feeling and why that extra star fell off for me. This honestly would have been a 4 star if it wasn't for that bizarre epilogue. :/
Hartmann is quickly becoming one of my favorite authors. This is my third book of hers and I wasn't sure if I could love these characters as much as I did from her first book. Boy, I was wrong. Not only did I fall in love with the main characters but I found myself completely loving the secondary characters. I enjoyed this book so much I even reread it in about a two week period. Jennifer, truly knews how to keep readers connected so be warned if you are anything like me you WILL lose sleep binge reading her books.
I really didn’t enjoy this at all. I felt the relationship between Cooper and Abby lacked serious foundation. There was zero chemistry and no connection built. I liked Cooper and Kate as characters but that’s about as far as it went for me. It was very underwhelming
I think I mentioned in a different review I did of one of Jennifer Hartmann’s books that I believe she writes with a thesaurus at the tips of her fingers. I also saw a meme once that said : Don’t use a big word when a singularly unloquacious and diminutive linguistic expression will satisfactorily accomplish the contemporary necessity. I think Ms. Hartmann would laugh at that, but I also think she needs to heed the advice. Just because you can use a certain word, doesn’t mean you should. Sometimes a word may means the same, but it just doesn’t fit in the sentence you’re placing it in and it sounds awkward. This happens a lot in her books.
I didn’t care too much for Claws and Feathers. It was better than Aria, which I DNF’d, but it still wasn’t for me. At least I finished this book. I didn’t like Abby very much and Cooper felt two dimensional. There’s also one too many catty women and too many “bad guys.” The mix didn’t work for me. Then one of the really good guys dies! Of course, YMMV.
This concludes my reading of Ms. Hartmann’s backlist and I’m sorry that it ended on such a low note. It seems that I read the good stuff first. The cover on this is beautiful though.
This one wasn't as captivating as some of Jennifer's other books, but it still ended up being a worthwhile read. It made me laugh several times, "Just suck it up, apologize, and go down on her in the mop closet. Works like a charm.", had suspenseful moments, likeable lead characters, and brought a tear to my eyes, “Something so small, but so mighty…it could do me in, be the end of me,” she whispered brokenly. “How easy it would be.”
I like that she updated the story to first person POV and we get both Cooper and Abby's perspectives. And I definitely was not expecting things to go down the way they did.
For me, this story wavered from 4 to 5 stars, so 4.5. At first I thought this was going to be a dark read, after what happened in the first few chapters, but it really wasn't. There was certainly lots of angst. It was nicely written and I liked the H/h and felt their romantic connection. The last few chapters were pretty emotional, dramatic, heartbreaking and unexpected. There are some beautifully written steamy scenes. It's one of a few books I wanted to keep reading to see what happened.
I think this might be an earlier story by Jennifer Hartmann. I loved all of her books I've read so far and by this story I can see how much she progressed as an author. It was a good story, just not the best I've read by this author.
I feel bad leaving a 3 star review for my 2024 favorite author…but I just wasn’t connected to this story like I usually am with her writing. I found myself skimming towards the end and just can’t say I’d recommend this one. Dang it.
I liked the characters. There was a lot of suspense and a good balance of us getting the right information at right time.
There were a few unbelievable parts but mostly plausible events happen. I think I realized glass in automobiles are tempered and don't come as shards after an accident but a million pieces. Also if you've been shot in torso you probably don't straddle someone like a week after release from hospital. I chose to over look to keep story going, I guess.
I think author has a thing for dating someone 15 years and nothing but heart ache because it's in another book.
Good read. Interesting.

Thus far, I have read every book written by Hartmann and this being her third, did not disappoint. In fact, it shows how far her writing has come in such a short time. I loved her first two books, but this is easily my favourite. Claws and Feathers is a gripping romantic suspense full of vivid imagery and dark twists. The emotion is raw and gut wrenching, yet beautiful. It is fair to say that Hartmann has written a masterpiece infused with passion and brought it to life with her amazing characters. Bring on the next book!
Just me again, back to say Jennifer can do no wrong still. This book wasn't like any of her others I've read IMO, and I'm read almost all at this point. It was suspenseful, there was mystery. It was a little lighter on the romance side, more slow burn, but when it got going it was 🔥🔥. I loved the story, anytime I thought I knew what was going on a twist was explained that showed I had no idea haha.
Abby and Cooper 😍 I loved watching this romance unfurl. I really enjoyed the character ARCs; Abby is loaded but no one really cared. Like it didn't have anything to do with who she was really. Cooper was the small town cop everyone would love. The white knight. The man who comes to save the day, and you know he's not going to change.
Maya and Daphne 😡 I HATE Maya with all of my being. She was such a bitch to Abby. When I found out she took the dog in the divorce, I hated her even more. Daphne grew on me as the story went on, I really didn't like her in the beginning but by the end of the box I could see she was a pretty good friend and was there for Abby.
Kate and James 💔 I was shipping Kate and James so damn hard. The fact the last moment of his life was them making lovey dovey eyes at each other seems perfect, but broke my heart so much. James and Kate both deserved more 😭😭😭

I'm really torn on this book because I have no gripes with it. As with all Jennifer Hartmann's writing, it was beautifully written, elegant and emotional without feeling forced. The plot was interesting and well paced, and well balanced with side-plots while also just having regular life chapters in there. The characters were well developed and all had their own personalities and quirks. The relationship was beautifully paced and well developed and not just drawn together for plot or fate, but it felt real and believable. It was even humourous at points which balanced out the heavy stuff Abby was dealing with. And yet for some reason, I didn't love it. I enjoyed it, but it didn't blow me away despite everything about it being good on paper. Seriously not a single gripe with it. But it just didn't WOW me, or have me desperate for that next chapter.
I really liked this book to start off the year. I loveeeeee Cooper. If there is one thing Jennifer Hartmann does so well, it’s write such a great MMC. Cooper was guarded and had walls up but was still kind, caring and sweet.
I wasn’t the biggest fan of the ending I had a lot of questions that I think should’ve been answered a little in depth. What was her (I forgot her name I finished the book a few days ago) plan when leaving? Why didn’t she ask Cooper to go with her? Was she just leaving because she had to fix her relationship with her brother? Was she upset Cooper didn’t fight for her when she said she told him on the dock she is going to leave?
This is one of Hartmann older books coming out 5 years ago, but she had gotten much better writing more in depth and giving substance to the story and character. I love her writing, and it’s cool to see her growth.
Abigail moves to Crow’s Peak for a fresh start after the death of her beloved grandmother and stays with her best friend Daphne. But after a night out, Abigail is kidnapped and held hostage until local senior police officer Cooper finds her on the brink of death. Cooper takes on the responsibility of keeping watch over Abigail while they investigate who her captor was. Being a small town there are intertwined and strained relationships between Daphne, Coopers sister Kate, Coopers ex-wife and more. There are a few plot twists that keep you wondering what next, and the secret uncovered wasn’t what I expected.
The storyline was good but I just felt a lack of connection with the characters and the story overall. I was a little bored through some parts of the book and the ending seemed a bit rushed and cut off. It had potential, but sadly for me did not reach it.
