The winds of change are whipping through Sauslind. Malduran officials are headed for the capital to discuss diplomacy, and although it was Eli’s actions that spurred these talks, she has a different errand to attend to. The king’s younger brother, Bernard, has fallen ill. Since it’s customary for someone from the royal family to visit in such times, Eli is sent in the prince’s stead. Along the way, devastating secrets are unearthed that threaten to rock the very foundation upon which Eli stands. Is everything she thought she knew a lie? Or does the truth even matter when the worst comes to pass and Sauslind finds itself on the brink of disaster?
3.5 rounded up for the excellent final chapter of the main story. This remains a quietly feminist, engaging story that definitely upped its game with the cliffhanger the volume ends on.
J'adore.
In the afterword, the author apologized for the delay in her story. She claimed she had no good ideas. After reading this volume, I am fairly certain that she overcame her writers block.
Back in the first volume, she apologized for being a novice writer. She was filled with insecurity. She has grown so much volume by volume. This volume was filled with complex plot, political intrigue, betrayal, and humor. Romance was relegated to the side story at the end.
This is a very serious volume compared to the others that preceded it. The scope of the story has expanded immensely. The author is still sticking to the gimmick of isolating Eliana from the prince so that stressful events can happen around her, yet things weren’t tidily wrapped up by the end of the book, so the book felt less formulaic than other volumes.
What I liked best about this volume was that Eliana as a character began to boldly take initiative. She couldn’t continue to be the absentminded bookworm with the intense political turmoil around her, and although she still has a way to go before she can bear the mantle of queen convincingly, I’ve enjoyed reading about her evolution.
