For fans of crime, mystery and detective, and police-procedurals, this is a must read that shows how with modern technology, criminals can no longer hide from the eyes of the law!
A startling, gripping crime thriller from one of the UK’s top new authors. A real page turner that will keep you on the edge of your seat until the very, last, line!
Two teachers are murdered, with the first killing publicly played out before hundreds of horrified spectators, and the other victim found dead only hours later.
Having just returned to duty from his recent suspension, DCI McKenzie (Say You’re Sorry & The Assassin’s Gift) quickly discovers he’s dealing with a sick but highly intelligent serial killer.
With a school reunion planned for that same night, in a race against time, McKenzie and his small team of investigators must use all their skills to track down the killer before more depraved murders take place, and more teachers from the school die.
But as the hours roll by and the death toll mounts, McKenzie finds himself facing a genius mystery criminal who is always one step ahead of the police and somehow anticipating their every move. In the days that follow, the school campus becomes a maze of rooms and tunnels where new murders are discovered, and the death toll mounts.
With surprising twists and turns at every stage, this is a ‘classic whodunnit ‘ that will keep you guessing to the very end. Can you spot who the killer is, or will they get away with the perfect murders?
Remember me? You’ll never forget it!

Ian Irvine was brought up in Scotland, and studied Physics for far too many years, before travelling the world working for high-technology companies. Ian has spent a career helping build the internet and delivering its benefits to users throughout the world,...as well as helping to bring up a family. Ian enjoys writing, painting and composing in his spare time. His particular joy is found in taking scientific fact and creating a thrilling story around it in such a way that readers learn science whilst enjoying the thrill of the ride. It is Ian's hope that everyone who reads an I.C.P.Irvine novel will come away learning something interesting that they would never otherwise have found an interest in. Never Science fiction. Always science fact. With a twist.
The first of Ian's novels is a Genetic Conspiracy Thriller which explores the world of Stem Cell Research and encourages us all to ask some very searching questions about the advances that science is making, and how much we, or others, should let it affect society. A contemporary adventure, "The Orlando File" takes the reader around the world and back, and creates a unique moral dilemma that the reader cannot help but get embroiled in: at the end, the reader must ask themself, what would they do in that situation?
His second novel "The Crown of Thorns" explores the power of genetics, explores the questions that the potential to clone humans will raise, and asks the ultimate question...what would happen if a scientist found a way to clone Jesus Christ?
Ian's third novel "London 2012 : What If?" departs from the world of genetics and explores an interesting possibility that Quantum Physics raises:the possibility for parallel worlds to exist alongside each other...and what would happen if a man who wondered what other types of lives he could be living had he made other choices, where unexpectedly to step from one world into another parallel world. "What If" is also an interesting voyage through human emotions, and many readers will find themselves asking themselves similar questions that the lead character does as they read the book. As with both "The Crown of Thorns" and "The Orlando File", at the end of the book the reader is left thinking...and different readers may take away different views on how the novels did, or should have ended... It is hoped that in this way, the novels will make themselves ideal subjects for reading clubs or book clubs.
Ian hopes that if you honour him by spending the time reading one his novels, that you will find it a positive experience, and enjoy it. He also invites you to email him and let him know if you did or did not enjoy the novel. And if you did, what were your favourite parts?
Things that frustrated me about this book: 1. The names kept getting messed up. If it’s supposed to be Mark captured it was Barry. If it was supposed to be McKenzie talking it was Dean. You could tell even the author couldn’t keep the narration straight.
2. The storyline moved too slow for a 2 part book. A lot of details could have been left out and was over described.
3. At no point in time does the media other than YouTube discuss a murder? Not believable in the age of media.
I won’t bother reading part 2 as I wouldn’t pay money for the book. Thank goodness this was free on Amazon!
An unreserved 5 stars. It is rare for me to give British police protocols 5 stars. Most of them have engaging characters, are easy to read but lack in the excitement category. Spoilers ahead.
What's good with this one? Easy to read and follow, good characters and fast paced action. What I didn't like: Alternating POVs, criminal POV and unfinished plot. You have to read book 2 to get the ending. But that last part didn't really bother me as I enjoyed the book. Rather, I wished I skipped the criminal POV as I sometimes do. It just tells you what the criminal does, which I don't need to know. It doesn't create mystery, it reduces mystery. The other thing I didn't like were the alternating POVs which the other character stories in the book. And still not sure where it's going with that yet.
Summary: Portobello High School is about to get demolished. As watchers gather for the demolition, they suddenly see a bound man on the roof who jumps off and dies. As the police arrive they go inside and find another dead body. They find that both are former teachers at the school.
As the police investigate, they receive a note that more teachers will die. A high school reunion from 20(?) years ago is about to take place. The police decide to let the reunion go ahead. They are afraid that the killer will strike again during the reunion, but then it's possible they could also find clues to the killer there. The reunion ends without drama. You'll need to read book 2 to find what happens next.
So overall, I liked the book because it was easy to read and follow. It was fairly fast paced even though there were a few side stories dealing with former students who went to the reunion. I'm not sure what those have to do with the murders at this point. The author did a good job of keeping me interested in the plot despite that. I'm currently reading book 2.
I got this book when it was free on Amazon, not realising it was part of a book (though the book is full length) rather than the first in a series.
For the most part, I enjoyed the story, though it could be slow at times where it contained unnecessary/ repeated details that felt like they were purely there as filler.
This book contained probably 80-90% of the story, was nicely building up to the third (likely) murder and the reveal of the culprit(s) but then just ended, with the last 10% of the book being used to push the authors other works.
Had this book been the complete story, it likely would have received 4*. As it is, I'm glad I got this book for free as it has turned out to be a waste of time, and I will not be wasting my money to find out the remaining 10-20% of the story.
I would only recommend this book if you like wasting your time and money or if you can find a cheap omnibus edition so you get the full story.
Two teachers are bizarrely murdered at the decaying campus where they both taught. The buildings are scheduled for demolition and DCI McKenzie vis worried that more murders will occur. Compounding matters is the high school reunion scheduled that week. McKenzie is short-staffed due to a security issue with the royal family but the killer(s) have no restrictions.
I did not care for the fact that this book was really no more than a teaser for the series. It builds gradually. The crime portion plods along and the reader is detoured to the lives of the rather boing attendees of the reunion including McKenzie and his pregnant wife. Nothing is resolved. I loved this author's Assasin's Gift and had hoped to be similarly entranced by this book. Perhaps had it had some resolution and less tired high school reunion angst I would be more interested in the next in the series.
If this book had an ending I would have scored it nearer a 4, as it was the author decided to lead his readers up the garden path to the ending only to stop short at an open gate, as it were. This has annoyed many readers who on buying a book expect to get a whole book, not one which doesn't give you the last chapter.
Soo unless you are happy to be bamboozled by an author into paying for the next book, whether you wanted it or not, just to find out the last chapter of this book which you have invested your time in reading, then I would not recommend wasting your time reading book this book.
Fantastic, thrilling and informative about all electronics.
Irvine hasn't disappointed me yet!
Heart pounding. I loved it. Immediately started looking for other titles by this author.
He needs a good editor. I'm not sure where the disconnect is in this publishing process.
I volunteer to send my notes any time he would like to have them and work for free! That is how much I believe in this author. Revisions would be minor and Mayberry have already been made in subsequent revisions.
The book finishes 75% through the story and requires you to download the rest. So only get this if you are prepared to spend 2 hours reading to a non-conclusion.
Normally I support Scottish authors but I'm a firm believer in once bitten twice shy and Ian C. P. Irvine will never get any money or reviews for any other of his books.
A great thriller that is building the tension then you have to get part 2 to see what happens. Normally I would not have bothered to get into the story knowing this. But what a storyteller! We are steadily introduced into a number of lives of past students going to a reunion. But two of the teachers have been killed in the weeks leading up to this event. Now I have to find out the answers along with DCI McKenzie.
Started good but with the start of a specific investigation. Came to the end of the book but not the end of the investigation. In order to actually get to the end, you have to buy the next book, kind of like TV uses to hook you for the next season. So, this whole book with no interim stories that would justify buying it leaves you hanging so you will buy the next book in the series. Not happy!
Due to eye issues Alexa reads to me, a very written thriller mystery novel. The characters are interesting and very will developed. The story line is complicated, fast moving, full of misdirection, and then no 👎conclusion. I would recommend this novel to readers who enjoys mysteries. I am looking forward to the second novel. Enjoy reading 🔰221 🏢💄🎓
Did not realise that the book was only a teaser for the second book which had to be bought. I abhor such marketing techniques, and also dislike authors who use the last 10% of the book to flog the rest of their works. A bit of a pity as the book was quite entertaining till it its teasing finale.
Awesome read! Could not put down until I finished it! Awesome characters and storyline. Someone killing teachers they didn’t like. Lots of suspense going on, just wish it went on into book 2. Definite must read this book 1
Well written and fast paced. Had me turning the pages until the end, where I found that I would have to download a second book to finish the story and discover who the killer/s are. That stopped me giving 5 stars
2.5 stars. Absolutely gutted with a cliffhanger end that required the reader to get book 2. Not a great book. Full of mini excerpts into different characters lives as they get ready for a school reunion. I hate not knowing the ending so I may be forced to read book 2.
I liked the characters & the suspense .It reminded me of my own school ,which I disliked though it didn't hold me back . I turned out well . Looking forward to book 2
Enjoyed this. Not sure what book 2 will bring but keen to find out. I hadn't read this author before but would recommend. A few spelling mistakes asked I can't fault it.
