A loner boy and a flashy girl find common ground via cosplay in this sweet and spicy romcom!
Wakana and Marin make it through their very first cosplay event, and not long after, Marin's heart undergoes a change...?! But that's not going to stop her cosplaying! To research their next project, the duo decide to watch the anime it's based on...but on screening night, they wind up alone together...?! And with JuJu, another gorgeous cosplayer, dropping by Wakana's house...it seems like a love triangle is abrew!
Now I noticed the main reason I can't enjoy this series is the heroine, her cute girl act seems shallow to me and I still don't learn anything about her background and her motivation so her personality doesn't make sense to me.
As for the cosplay culture depicted in the story, it's as shallow as always.
Yes new girls are introduced in this volume so the 2 stars rating is for the fact that, at least there is no girl on girl hating or girls fighting over a guy so far.
PS: the original Japanese title of this series calls the heroine as a "Dress-up Doll", so does it mean the heroine is being viewed (at least by her creator) as a doll to dress up with more than a human being? Sorry, this is getting even more uncomfortable for me.
The cosplay elements, which is the main draw of this title, are well researched, and much of that research is documented in the extras that are exclusive to the collected editions. Just following this manga, one could dive into the hobby and be deep into the cosplay subculture.
Idk why I didn’t connect with this volume of My Dress Up Darling as much as I did with the first two - I suppose it was because it was introducing some new characters but I love the interacts between the two main characters, Marin and Wakana too much. I have seen bits of the anime (need to actually sit and watch the series in full!) and I bet this works so well as a full anime series. I absolutely love the art style - that’s always a 10/10! I still did enjoy this and take the fact it has so many higher star reviews than mine as a reference point 🥰
”With their first cosplay event a success, Wakana and Marin are already thinking about their next big project! But complications arise when JuJu, one of Marin's favorite cosplayers, comes calling... at Wakana's house! There's also the little matter of Marin's newfound feelings for her partner in crime... When Wakana ends up at Marin's place for an impromptu anime screening, it turns out the pair have the house to themselves! Will Marin be able to control her emotions, or will she let it all hang out?!” ”Uh, hold up… isn’t this kind of like a stay at home date?!”
New characters, the group is growing! Juju's a fun character, but the guy walks in her while she's bathing, so there's that content warning checked off. The cosplay stuff is genuinely pretty interesting though. Looks like this series has an anime too
This series just keeps getting better! The characters have such deep motivations. The art is beautiful. I am so invested and can’t wait to see where else this series goes!
marin and gojo are just too cute!! i love their story so much. we get another cosplayer in this one, who marin loves! she asks gojo to make her costume as well. marin’s crush on gojo is so dang CUTE!
After the first cosplay event, Gojou calls Marin beautiful which leads to her falling for him. This is why we see a different Marin in this volume. There are two new characters and they also seem interesting. Gojou decides to make costumes and other than that, this volume mainly focuses on the relationship between Gojou and Marin. Gojou is happy that he gets to spend more time with her and Marin thinks she is in love with him. It was a sweet and enjoyable volume but I did not like it as much as the previous one. I still definitely recommend and will read the next volume as soon as possible.
Thought I would give this series a couple more volumes as the first book was ok but I have been enjoying them less as I go along. I don't particular care for any of the characters and this volume felt a bit like a chore to get through at times.
Between Marin's falling hard, and the introduction of a new character, Volume 3 is really expanding the world of My Dress-Up Darling... Highlights: - Grandpa invites the mystery girl in from the rain and lets her take a shower. Telling Wakana he has a friend over, there is an awkward meeting with the new girl (first time nudity in the series... but also very funny) - We meet Sajuna Inui, better known by her cos-name Juju. She followed Marin and Wakana from the cosplay show and wants him to make her a cosplay costume, having had fallen in love with the skill he put into Marin's costume. - Marin completely fangirls over Juju and they eventually decide to do a group cosplay together: Black Lily and Black Lobelia from an anime called Flower Princess Blaze. - Wakana visits Marin at her home to borrow the Blaze DVDs, and they end up watching several episodes together, prompting Marin to think of it as an "At Home Date" - Sajuna invites Wakana and Marin over to learn about photography from Shinju, her younger sister (introducing the gag that the older one is smaller and the younger is much taller and bustier) - The 4 go scout an abandoned hospital as a location and Juju gets scared. Her explanation of how much she loves Wakana's designs connects him with a joyful memory of his past. - After school, Marin and Wakana go to the beach and we see that Marin has fallen more in love with him. She invites them to hang out lots of summer break, partly to help him be able to see more of the world around him, but also because she wants to spend time with him.
Still cute! Reading this actually makes me smile. Recommend.
- 4/5🧵 I continue to really enjoy this manga series. I liked the introduction of two new characters who intensify the plot and avoid making the story monotonous. I'm curious to find out how Inui's character will evolve. Very interesting is that this manga is also a sort of "guide" to the world of cosplay and highlights everything that is behind this hobby: both in terms of make-up techniques and hairstyles and wigs, and the fact that also focus on photography and photoshoots. I've already read three volumes in a row and I'll probably read the fourth today too!
Did the previous volumes not hit enough fetish buttons yet? Well then, welcome a new character - a legal loli! (who will absolutely be shown naked 3 pages in because she's a complete idiot) ooooh lets also make sure she's actually a year older than our protag AND is a complete troll (she demands a cosplay made for her, threatens blackmail, talks trash about Gojo's lack of skills in certain areas, etc...) She also comes prepackaged with a younger sister who of course appears oldest in the group, and has tits the size of her head
Combined with previously problematic art (panty shots, endless sexualization, why are the word balloons in this panel positioned around the girl's lovingly detailed panties clad ass) ... the cosplay stuff is cute, Marin's realization of her crush is adorable you just really need to put on that hazmat suit & go thru the radioactive swamp to get to it
A big surprise comes in the form of another cosplayer. Wakana gets a very surprising visit by Juju, a more experienced cosplayer, who wants him to make a outfit for her like he did for Kitagawa and after the two slower get to know her and even meet her little sister, it becomes an ambitious group project. Later, our two go to the beach together and it looks like they could have plans together for the upcoming summer break. A (100%/Outstanding)
I love this series so much, Marin and gojo are the best MCs and the story just gets better every volume, I can tell I will be rereading this series forever. This volume is nice cos it's not fully focused on the next cosplay it's more about the characters just being teenagers and doing normal stuff in their life and it's so sweet to see gojo experiencing new things all teenagers should do.
Marin falling more in love with him just makes me smile so much and she is such a sweet character that you can't help but love.
3.5 stars…not quite as good as the first two and the introduction of the new characters was pretty yikes. But Marin and Wakana still have a super cute relationship. And I love Wakana’s grandfather too. In case you didn’t read my other reviews of this series…don’t read this manga based on my review, ok? I don’t recommend it! Lol.
