This volume consists of 4 novellas – ‘The Battle of Bugosi Mansion’, A Pretty Monster’, ‘Safe’, and ‘The Devil You Know’ – that take place in Cape Noir and revolve around the undead avenger Brother Bones. There have been several previous volumes written about this protagonist that I haven’t read, so I was thrown into the middle of unfamiliar territory. No problem. The authors describe Cape Noir so well I felt I had walked these mean streets myself. This book is in a sub-genre I’ve never read before – a blend of crime noir and horror and pulp. I enjoyed it. The characters were lively, the action popped, and the setting, which always plays a large part of any noir story, was overwhelming. Think of ‘Casalanca’ – it wouldn’t have been the same story set in San Francisco, Casablanca at the beginning of World War 2 had a singular vibe. So does Cape Noir. If what you are seeking is a crime drama populated by supernatural creatures set in a Gotham-like environ, then you will enjoy these stories. I did, and I had no preconceptions of what I was sticking my nose into. It was a pleasant surprise.
Three authors in addition to Ron Fortier, continue the saga of Cape Noire's Undead Avenger. The first story, "The Battle for Bugosi Mansion," is a direct follow-up to Fortier's previous masterpiece, and introduces several important new characters. The second introduces the Demon Deacon who protects Little Jamaica. The third story introduces Lilith, The Devil's Daughter. The fourth, by Fortier, ties everything back together and features a guest shot by Cheveyo and The Dead Sheriff from Mark Justice's series.
