GIDEON THORN IS BACK IN ANOTHER DARK AND MYSTERIOUS HARROWING ADVENTURE!

An unidentified monster wrecks a paddle steam on the Mississippi River, killing all but one crewman. Newspaper reports of the incident and others draw Thorn to Natchez to confront the beast. Gideon Thorn investigates while negotiating the pitfalls of race and politics in post-Reconstruction-era Mississippi.

Thorn seeks to verify, identify and eliminate the aquatic predator, while thinking about Dinah Pilcher's recovery. Meanwhile, Natchez natives struggle within the Mississippi's rigid white supremacist "closed society," ex-slaves are seeking equality, while racist whites refuse to acknowledge losing the Civil War.

Another good creature feature, Western style. I enjoy the tidbits of history that Author Newton scatters throughout his tales. So glad I discovered gets another compelling story teller.

Michael Newton – Gideon Thorn Bk 9 – Rip Tide - Reviewed 7/13/20 - Read 7/10-11/20

A new report leads Gideon to the town of Natchez, adjusting to the loss of the Civil War!

Gideon Thorn read the reports of the wreck of a paddle steamer on the Mississippi River, and heads for Natchez to find out if there really is a beast in the water. Arriving in town, and as usual, the people are curious about the man dressed in black with the unusual streak of white in his hair. Gideon again is faced with the problems of newspapermen, and the politics, but also in the post -Reconstruction-era in the state of Mississippi.

Not only is he facing the investigation of the beast, he still has on his mind Dinah Pitcher’s recovery from his last investigation. But accepting the fact that she is in good hands and seems to be doing well, Gideon throws himself into the work at hand. While he does this, it seems the locals are in the midst of dealing with a white supremacist “closed society”, and the ex-slaves are trying to survive and looking for equality. It appears that the area is having trouble adjusting to the loss of the Civil War. Now for the hard work, the search is on…

What did I like? Oh NO! Here is another one of my favorite characters. I have been with Gideon through his loss of his family and ending up with his aunt, right up to and through her death. Gedeon has taken on the world’s most outrageous reports of monsters and seeks answers for all of them if they can be found. He is a man of his word and integrity, fighting to understand.

What will you like? Incredible mystery, shocking discoveries, extraordinary characters, mindboggling storyline. Beautifully and professionally written and edited. Michael takes you from your arrival at Natchez, through the vicious attacks, the unbelievable stupidity of some, and brings you to the bottom of the Mississippi River. You will hear the shouting, feel the water, see the bullets, and witness the mind-blowing fight for surviving, The Civil War left its mark on so many people, and Natchez was among those cities that went through a ton of pain while it tried to adjust to the end of an era. Michael does an excellent job of bringing this story to us, and it will be a wonderful addition to your western library.

A Well Developed Early Western!
Gilman did a masterful job of taking an unknown character and weaving his life among well-known historical figures with a most enjoyable refresher of their history. Tilman writes it like he was there!
