Stories about the life of a Forest Ranger, the habitat and animals he has worked to protect, together with no small number of self-effacing humorous anecdotes. This book of stories draws on the author's thirty years in the US Forest service, including encounters with bears, elk, moose, and that strangest of animals, humans. Laced with happy humor, the stories inform and educate while they entertain. Adventures have come along with the work and Griffin is a natural storyteller.
If you like folksy reminiscing with wildlife biology, this book is for you! Greatly enjoyed this, but then I was a fan of Pete Griffin's Tongass Trails show when it ran in Southeast Alaska. I appreciate how he presents himself as fallible as any of the rest of us human beings. Good lessons on leadership and listening to be found here too.
I'm biased. I worked for the Forest Service, so I related to many stories. I also worked with Pete for short time in Alaska. Simple, short stories of events that happen in natural resource and people management.
This is a nice book. Not a page turner though. It’s sort of like sitting in and observing a nice empty parking lot for a couple of hours. If you like doing that then you’ll really get a bang out of this book.
