Spend a year unearthing the wonder of the Holy Spirit alongside A. W. Tozer. Tozer was a man who thirsted for the Spirit of God, who prayed often and shunned distraction so that he might drink Him in more steadily. In these daily meditations on Scripture, Tozer will inspire you to do the same. According to Tozer, the Spirit is neglected by the modern church. But when believers know the Spirit—intimately and accurately—they experience freedom from stagnancy. They know power and life. This devotional explores many of the defining characteristics of the Holy Spirit. Each day stokes the believer's internal desire to hunger and thirst after the Spirit of God.
Encounter Tozer’s heart and wisdom like never before in this newly revised edition. Continue worshiping alongside Tozer with the rest of his Trinitarian Tozer on the Son of God and Tozer on the Almighty God. With each page, may your heart be filled and your worship increased.
Aiden Wilson Tozer was an American evangelical pastor, speaker, writer, and editor. After coming to Christ at the age of seventeen, Tozer found his way into the Christian & Missionary Alliance denomination where he served for over forty years. In 1950, he was appointed by the denomination's General Council to be the editor of "The Alliance Witness" (now "Alliance Life").
Born into poverty in western Pennsylvania in 1897, Tozer died in May 1963 a self-educated man who had taught himself what he missed in high school and college due to his home situation. Though he wrote many books, two of them, "The Pursuit of God" and "The Knowledge of the Holy" are widely considered to be classics.
A.W. Tozer and his wife, Ada Cecelia Pfautz, had seven children, six boys and one girl.
AW Tozer is my favorite author of all time and this one does not disappoint. This was recommended to me by the Moody book vender at the Shepherds Conference last month when I asked him pointedly "what's the one book I need to purchase from you?"
This reads like a devotional as all 42 chapters are only a few pages in length and offer a variety of spiritual insight and wisdom across an extensive bredth. One could argue this reads a lot like a spiritual version of Sun Tzu in its smattering of insights and span of reach.
Here's some nuggets I gleaned from the plethora of Tozer jewels:
- "Men think of the world not as a battleground, but as a playground. We are not here to fight; we are here to frolic ... this, we believe, is a fair summary of the religious philosophy of modern men ... they are facing both ways, enjoying Christ AND the world ... it is now the bound duty of all Christians to reexamine their spiritual philosophy in the light of the Bible."
- "Any belief that does not command the one who holds it is not a real belief ... what we need these days is a company of Christians who are prepared to trust God as completely now as they know they must at the last day. For each of us the time is surely coming when we shall have nothing but God."
- "The most critical need of the Church at this moment is men - the right kind of men ... who feel themselves expendable in the warfare of the soul because they have already died to the allurements of this world."
- "We Christians are bound in all conscience to discourage the reading of subversive literature and to promote as fully as possible the circulation of good books ... our Christian faith teaches us to expect to answer every idle word - how much more severely shall we be held to account for every evil word, whether printed or spoken."
- “The desire to appear broad-minded is not easy to overcome, because it is rooted in our ego and its simply a none-too-subtle form of pride. In the name of broad-mindedness many a Christian home has been opened to literature that sprang not from a broad mind but from a little mind, dirty and polluted with evil. We require our children to wipe their feet before entering the house. Dare we demand less of the literature that comes into our home?”
- “Only the humble man is completely sane, for he is the only one who sees clearly his own size and limitations … humility is a coming back to sanity like Nebuchadnezzar … the simply fact is that no one can stand in the way of a completely humbled man.”
- “All Christians and all churches are engaged in one of the three activities: guarding the dead past, creating fleshly trifles that will perish with the flesh or working in cooperation with the Holy Spirit in the constant creation of eternal treasures that will outlast the stars.”
- “Faith can afford to accept the appearance of defeat, knowing the true believer cannot be defeated finally.” (John 14:19)
- “In the Christian way, the one vital thing is not speed nor distance attained, but direction.”
- “The minister himself should simply carry into the pulpit on Sunday the same spirit that has characterized him all week long.”
- “It often happens that all the good effect of a service will be destroyed by light and unworthy conversation after the meeting. This is a sad fault, for the ministry of any church should be no more than a public expression of the pure spirituality that is the regular day-by-day life of those who are a part of it.”
- “Pray till you pray … often the last ten minutes may mean more to us than the first half hour.”
- “A world of confusion and disappointment results from trying believe without obeying.”
- “Christians who understand the true meaning of the cross will never whine about being treated unfairly.”
- “A church can wither as surely under the ministry of soulless Bible exposition as it can where no Bible is given at all. To be effective, the preacher’s message must be alive – it must alarm, arouse challenge; it must be God’s present voice to a particular people … must be under the constant sway of the Holy Spirit … without being personal, the true prophet will nevertheless pierce the conscience of each listener as if the message had been directed to him alone.”
- “Let the whole Bible speak and you will find that it speaks with one clear voice.”
- “Let it be remembered that Christ is Lord and can make any demands upon us that He chooses, even to the point of requiring that we deny ourselves and bear the cross daily. The mighty anointing of the Holy Spirit that follows will restore to the soul infinitely more than has been taken away. It is a hard way, but a glorious one. Those who have known the sweetness of it will never complain about what they have lost. They will be too well pleased with what they have gained.”
I have shared before that I´m not very into devotional books, why then am I chose to give this a try? Because I have enjoyed Tozer´s books a lot in the past. I see him as a very passionate and deep thinker. I remember I shared before how much I enjoy Tozer´s books.
In this devotional book, you have a passage from the Bible, some words written by Tozer, and short prayers. You will find wisdom, hope, and encouragement to love God and His Word. This book is made of several of his writings during his life and short prayers. I think is an enjoyable book where you can grow your love and knowledge about The Holy Spirit every day of the year. Look for the other devotionals of this series, they are also great.
Another note about the author: I shared before how much it was disappointing to me when I read in a bio about Tozer when they share how He neglected His family. I wanted to stop reading about Him and was very sad to find out this part of his sad story. Then, I changed my mind, I decided I was going to still read his material, toss the bad, embrace the good (that is a lot) but always keeping in mind He was just a person, like everyone immersed in his own fallacies, sin, and temptation. I´m sure all the authors have a lot of sad and ugly things, but not everyone has been exposed to a biography. Also, I can recall every time I remember Tozer, how much you can get into something that you may tend to forget or run away from the most important goals God trusted us in this life, you can have mistakes and still being a tool for others to know about God
Tozer on the Holy Spirit is a devotional that takes quotes from a pillar of the Christian faith A.W. Tozer. Each day references a different scripture as well as some insight into how to apply the scripture to the day taken straight from the writings of Tozer. Tozer was not only known for his preaching but above that for his prayer life. Being able to read his words and perspective on scripture, prayer and the Holy Spirit has been enlightening and encouraging. I also like that the author included a coded number system and a list of reference codes in the back of the book to help the reader find which A.W Tozer books the quotes were taken from giving the reader an opportunity to continue reading his books. .
If you are wanting to know what God is really after in your life take up this devotional. It is filled with Biblical truth that will help you grow. Tozer challenges us to be holy as our heavenly Father is holy and how to cultivate holiness into our lives. I will put it down for now but I will surely pick it up again for it has become one of my sharpening tools.
Lots of great insights on the work and person of the Holy Spirit!
I got this eBook for free from Amazon, and it has been a blessing! I have been studying the gifts of the Spirit in order to complete a book on the subject, so this was a timely supplement to my research.
This devotional was not written by A. W. Tozer himself, but compiled by an editor from his writings. The material was arranged by topics, such as who the Spirit is and how we relate to Him, personal holiness through submission to the Spirit, etc. Each month's readings seemed to follow a particular theme. Each daily reading included a particular Bible verse, commentary about the subject it introduced, and then a snippet of a prayer, hymn or other bit of writing that wrapped it all up. The author included references to what was quoted, in case you wanted to learn more.
I gained SO many insights reading this book and highlighted many remarks. I frequently read remarkable passages aloud to my spouse, so that we could both benefit.
If you are looking for an inspiring book that will increase your understanding of the work and person of the Holy Spirit, I highly recommend this devotional.
I didn’t realize how little I knew of the Holy Spirit until I started this devotional. I love Tozer and his work, and so I was incredibly excited to get a taste of his writing every day. I was definitely not disappointed. The pictures he paints with words, and the way he compiles his thoughts are so beautiful, and though hard to read and understand sometimes, that is what makes it so rewarding in the end. I appreciate when a man can write in such an educated and eloquent way. We assume the Bible doesn’t say much about the third Person of the Trinity, when indeed it does. This devotional shows us how little we think of Him and how little we teach of Him. I feel much more encouraged in the Word, and determined to be close with God, to pray, and to ask that the Holy Spirit show us Himself.
I most highly recommend this devotional if you struggle with the identity of God as a Triune consisting of God the Father, Jesus the Son and Savior — and the Holy Spirit as a distinct person with whom to have relationship. This devotional will deepen your understanding of God, and deepen your faith and confidence in the power of God in the person of the Holy Spirit dwelling at the core of your being. Yes, I loved this book.
DNF @ 11 pages. This eARC was unreadable. It was full of spelling errors and missing letters. I thought it would be easy to get through, but it just got harder and more confusing to understand what the message of each devotional was. I am willing to give this one a try again if I can get my hands on a copy of it, but for now it will be left unfinished, which is tragic because I love Tozer's work.
A collection of daily readings one for each day of the year taken from Tozer's books. The readings are focused on The Holy Spirit. A helpful book. The readings are short and take only a few minutes each day but contain a depth that will reward further meditation. Some of his way of communicating may show the age of the material but it is still a rich volume collecting together some of his work
A very lovely book of short devotionals. Tozer gives very thought provoking insights. I would give it 5 stars except the language is starting to age. It is not quite King James English, but it certainly feels antiquated. It would be nice to see this freshened up in contemporary English.
An excellent devotional on the Holy Spirit and highly recommended for anyone wanting solid teaching on this topic although you will be required to prayerfully consider what is written.
365 days of devotional readings from Tozer’s writings. He is one of my favorite theological writers so when I started this book I knew that my devotional time would not be trivial but thoughtful.
