I wasn’t sure what I was going to encounter with The Light Beneath the Dark by JP Sayle. The cover presents a dark and edgy appearance, yet the blurb hints at an underlying vulnerability. In reality, The Light Beneath the Dark is a bit of both. Its darkness comes from the Dark Angels motorcycle club, but the vulnerability is all Lincoln’s to own.
Lincoln Stone, the president of the Dark Angels motorcycle club, has a reputation that nauseates and distresses the locals; in particular, law enforcement has it out for him. Lincoln is not an innocent individual by any means. His club has a shady past that includes scuffles with the law. The tragic death of his sister, Lizzie, and the promise he made on her deathbed, changed everything for Lincoln. Still, he has a reputation to uphold, and a secret he carries could undermine it. Nonetheless, he steers the Dark Angels on a path that now only skirts the law, by divesting the club of illegal activities.
When Lincoln is accused of a crime, one he didn’t commit, he can see his tenuous hold on his world, and the promise he made to Lizzie, falling apart. Turning to the law firm that assisted him with the custody of his niece, River, his case is assigned to the young Mason Davenport. Me thinks there was a little matchmaking going on here on the part of the older Davenport at the firm.

Mason Davenport lives for the law, but the broody Lincoln pushes all his buttons. It is a conflict of interest to get involved with a client, but that doesn’t preclude friendship, nor a little game of “tease the big guy”. Slowly Mason worms his way behind Lincoln’s walls and a possibility of more emerges after his case is over. But first, Mason must work his arse off to clear Lincoln of the fictitious charges. Stalled at every turn, he ultimately has to convince Lincoln that putting River in front of the judge, and divulging his sexuality, are his best defense.
River is a strong, sassy and opinionated little five-year-old. But she is just that, a five-year-old who cherishes her Poppy (Lincoln). She takes an immediate fancy to Mason and is often in cahoots with Mason to manipulate Lincoln. But it is obvious that Lincoln secretly adores their relationship. For the first time, River and his world expands beyond the circle of the Dark Angels, which is both scary and exhilarating for River and Lincoln.
Lincoln harbors a vulnerability beneath his stoic exterior, which is constantly on display, deepening his character. He is tough with the Dark Angels, never letting that vulnerability slip while dealing with club issues. But the scary, tough, big guy is gentle with his inner circle, doing anything to protect them from the harshness of reality. He carries the love he has for River on his sleeve and if you ever want to see the darkness within him emerge, just wrong River in any way. It is blatantly obvious that the same love will be extended to Mason, when and if Lincoln is able to accept his own worth.
‘The Light Beneath the Dark’ is appropriately titled. It’s the contrast of darkness and light that grips the reader.
The truth behind the accusations brought against Lincoln, might be his ultimate downfall. It is a true betrayal that ultimately would be handled by Club rules. When all goes sideways, Mason is the only one who can reach Lincoln. But Mason cannot be involved, which could result in being the demise of the men’s relationship as well. Thankfully, a meddling five-year-old initiates an intervention that just might pull them through the devastation.
The Light Beneath the Dark is appropriately titled. It’s the contrast of darkness and light that grips the reader. The darkness is an edgy reality, as to what makes up Lincoln, while the contrasting lightness is all the love and selflessness he possesses that is now allowed to shine in the darkness reality created. The Light Beneath the Dark is a magnificent start to the Dark River Stone Collective series, staging for stellar things to come.
