This boxed set includes Moon Tortured, Darkness Unchained, Midnight Falls, Lunar Marked.

Moon Tortured (Book 1)

Death should be the end of your life—not the beginning.
Sky life started with a death—her own. She spent the first twenty-three years of her life unaware of this, among other things. She always thought she was just a shapeshifter until she wakes up in a strange house with only vague memories of her mother’s death at the hands of vampires.

At the request of a powerful witch, Sky is put under the protection of the Midwest Pack. But she isn’t sure she can trust them, especially after she meets the dangerously sexy Ethan, a pack member, who’s known for being more ruthless than altruistic. After she’s attacked by a necromancer, a mercenary, and the vampires who killed her mother, she has no choice but to accept the pack’s help.

The Midwest Pack aren’t quite what they seem—but then again, neither is Sky. As they form an uneasy alliance to search for the reason behind the vampires’ vicious attacks, it becomes clear that Sky possesses magic no one has ever seen—and it all started with what happened at her birth.

Darkness Unchained (Book 2)

What happens when your only allies are your enemies?
Just survive. That’s been Sky’s goal since uncovering a dangerous secret: she had died at birth and became host to a very powerful spirit shade. Now Skylar has the rare ability to manipulate magic—an ability some would kill for. Needing to lie low, she declines membership in the Midwest Pack, the most powerful pack in the country. Sky thinks she can return to a normal life. She’s wrong.

When a pack member is brutally assaulted, Sky saves her. The Midwest Pack and their rivals, the Northern Seethe, are under attack, and the pack wants Sky to help find the person responsible. Once again, Sky must negotiate the lies, secrets, and strange politics that govern the otherworld while struggling not to draw attention to her abilities. Now she wonders if she will be able to find the killer—and get out alive.

Midnight Falls (Book 3)

A shapeshifter who possesses magic shouldn’t exist—and some people want to keep it that way.
Sky has finally accepted that her life will never be simple again. As a werewolf who is a host to a powerful spirit shade, Sky has the ability to manipulate magic, among other things—and that means she has many enemies in the otherworld. In need of allies, Sky joins the Midwest Pack.

Being part of the pack is supposed to make things better. Instead, she is pulled into a clandestine world of strange politics, dark secrets, and hidden dangers. When Sky does a powerful spell to protect Ethan, the pack’s Beta, she is cursed by the Creed—the ruling body of the witches who will do anything to get rid of her.

Adding to the problems, the Midwest Pack becomes responsible for guarding the Clostra, a book of magic that everyone wants, including the Creed. In the wrong hands, it can destroy the otherworld and force a battle that no one can win.

Lunar Marked (Book 4)

Sometimes the penalty for magic is death.
The Midwest Pack used the Clostra to perform a powerful and dangerous spell to save Sky. Now the pack is dealing with the aftermath and doing damage control. But they can’t hide how the magic has changed the dynamics of the otherworld—or that they are responsible.

McKenzie Hunter is the author of urban fantasy, dark fantasy, and paranormal romance books. She discovered early that new adventures were just a page-turn away; all she had to do was read a book. She’s had her share of escapades from hanging out with vamps, joining the chaos of shifter packs, creating spells with witches, and avoiding deals with the fae.

When she isn't working on her next book, she’s reading, binge-watching TV, or disappearing into her own world during nature walks (probably on the lookout for magical beings—or maybe not).

Nope...

I kept hoping it would improve but I gave up about 20% of the way through... The female lead is written badly and the whole "she's overly emotional for a werewolf because she cries"? Is anger not an emotion? Because every single interaction with the male were-animals is just "angry glare this" and "raging eyes that"...

I really, really wanted to like this series. I love the idea of the book & I liked most of the characters - the only reason I gave three stars. I have been listening to this series as a part of the Audible Prime catalog; I am finishing book 4 right now. I am committed to finishing book 4, but I can guarantee, without a doubt, that I will not be continuing the series. There’s is absolutely no way that I would pay for anymore books in this series.

The overall idea of the book is good - very interesting. However, I should have stopped in the second book when I realized the writing was not going to get any better. The juxtaposition of repeated simple words in the earlier books - I was ready to scream if the word “rather” was used one more time! - and the overuse of the thesaurus as the series progressed was grating. There is also too much filler that doesn’t matter. You can often walk out of the room for a bit and not miss anything important.

As for the characters, I liked most of them. They were not all likable people, but they were true to the character. This is the first book i can remember reading, however, we’re I truly could not stand the main character. And so far, by book 4, she hasn’t grown as a person - not even a little.

Ethan, admittedly, is a womanizing, egotistical, romantically dysfunctional misogynist. But,at least he is true to his character, given his position in the book. The main female character, Skylar, absolutely loves to label everyone else, often descending to referring to others as psychopaths, sociopaths, or narcissists. However, she continues to fail to realize when her own personality and actions make her a selfish, petulant brat, socially clueless due to her own self-absorption, that puts others in horribly dangerous situations. She prides herself in her ability to “excoriate with words.” What?! Actually, her ability to respond with no mental filter in a witty, acerbic way is her best quality. It is the only thing she really has worth priding herself in because she denies all other aspects of herself. I’m not sure if this character was actually meant to come across as a strong, independent female, as Skylar wants to believe herself to be, or not. She just comes across as an immature adult who regularly throws tantrums when things don’t go her way.

Overall I am very disappointed in how the idea of the book fell flat. It was a great concept, but a lost opportunity.

Incomplete

I don’t know how these duo authors worked together on this series but they definitely left some gaps. So much so that I thought I had missed critical information from another series or or earlier book even though I was on books 1 and 2. Then there were the transitions that felt off; like one author wrote this half of the chapter while the other author wrote the remaining only the 2nd author failed to reread what the 1st author typed in.
Also Sky starts off meek and scared running for her life. Books 2and3 she literally had no purpose other than a fly on the wall. In book 4 she has a very annoying moral compass that gets brought in ad nauseam. She has nothing useful to add to the situations she puts herself in. I like the plot, all the twists and turns even the side characters are interesting however I could do with a rewrite of Skys personality. Since there are apparently more books to the series then I will continue to read and hope her superiority complex improves.

⭐️⭐️

I got this box set free on Audible and discovered that I've already read this series on my Kindle after I started listening.

It's an okay series but not worth a repeat.

The narrator sounded like she had the flu and a stuffed nose.

Book 1:
It's a fresh take on the genre of urban fantasy with the Skylar Brooks series! Skylar is a werewolf...and maybe something else. She's denied who she is for years and she's suddenly found herself in some hot water with the local vampire Seethe. Cue a slightly involuntary stay with the local pack, and Sky finds herself in a heap of trouble and forced to embrace her wolf side more.
The story is filled with action and the world created by Hunter is pretty well done, with lots of details and rules about the structure of the pack and seethe. All of the characters introduced were interesting, but a little repetitive, though most of that will buff out with the later books in the series. The story starts a little slow, but does pick up. There's a far bit of exposition that could have been either cut or maybe moved to keep the flow of the story better.
The book ends at roughly 90% (ebook at least). Though the story is over 300 pages, so you get enough story regardless. The remaining 10% is a chapter from Ethan's book (basically Moon Tortured, but from Ethan's perspective) and the first chapter of the next book.
I am definitely glad I read this author's other works first because this was not my favorite, but she definitely improves as she writes more. It's still a good book and I'm glad I've read it. I'm just finally doing a reread and I know I like the books later in the series more than this one. It gets better, so stick with it

Book 2:
Skylar's had the veil lifted from her eyes and she can't find from the realities surrounding her. She's training with Winter when weird and lethal creatures attack. Now, after she gets Winter to safety, she can just move right along and mind her business? Nope! She wants to know how she can help her friend and prevent others from meeting the same fate.
It's a good story that flows pretty well, and more species are introduced with the varying rules for survival. And this time is a creature who wants to take over the pack and the seethe, so the gang is really up against a tough one. Sky is interesting enough when she's given something to do, there are times where it seems that since Chris has a POV, the more action-y parts are given to her rather than Sky. It's still a good story and I know the series gets better (I'm currently doing a reread of it), Sky just has to go through some life changing things first. I always like multiple POVs! They are always my favorite when they add to the story and bonus if it's in difference voice, too. Hearing from both Sky and Chris was interesting. I don't think it necessarily enhanced the story in this case, but it didn't hurt it either. There were some not so smooth transitions from Sky to Chris's POV, but they were easy to figure out. There's only one chapter than specifies who narrates it, while all the other times you figure it out on your own.
It's a nice book with some swearing and suggestive comments, but nothing spicy in this book (but the story does heat up in the later books).
The story finishes at about 92% of the way through with the first chapter of Ethan's book 2 and the next Sky Brooks story to take up the remaining percentage.

Book 3:
The books must be read in order or you will be completely lost in this book. This book is told only from Sky's perspective, so if you had any issues with Chris getting a POV, that does not happen in this book.
Alliances are made and broken in this story. With some tentative ones made initially, under some pretty suspicious circumstances and it was honestly a twist I didn't see coming. From there the plot thickens, with Sky trying to get and keep the Aufero from Marcia, who may or may not be a sociopath. And trying to stop someone from ending the entire world. So she has a bit on her mind, plus dealing with her vampire, she doesn't have much downtime.
Sky is still an interesting character. She is still a bit naive, I had hoped she be a bit less in this story, but I think that's just who she is at this point. Always looking on the bright side of things, unable to do anything that would actually hurt anyone. I like how complex her relationship with Quell is. It's probably one of the more interesting things about this series.
Ethan is an enigma because I don't really know why Sky is interested in him a part from him being hot. He's honestly pretty mean to her, but she manages to still follow him around like an excitable puppy. Tbh, I'm a bit more interested in her and Josh or even Steven at this point.
There's some swearing and a lot violence throughout the story. Not particularly gory, but violence nonetheless.
The story ends at around 89% and the rest is a chapter for Ethan's POV book and the next Sky Brooks book.

Book 4:
Another adventure in the Sky Brooks series, with the mystery of Kelly's disappearance, weird man/animals that aren't quite shifters, and the ever present problem with Quell. Also to keep things interesting, Marcia and the witches keep causing problems and have an interesting ally to help them out. Sky and Co have their work cut out for them. Sky plays more of an active roll in the story, rather than sitting on the sides and hoping to go along with Josh and Ethan, like in the previous books. Sky grows more as a character, including her relationship with Ethan. The main issue I have is that Sky keeps holding on the Quell and denying his feelings for her, she choses not to see them and it gets a little frustrating. I do like how much she grows. She does stand up for herself and I'm glad she gets to take an active role in her saving for once.
Anytime I do a reread of this series, I usually read from this book onwards because Sky really fills herself out and she gets to be more of an active participant, rather than a passive one. Plus she gets laid.
There is some non-explicit steam in this story, and violence and murder. The series must be read in order otherwise you will be completely lost.
The book ends at about 88% and the rest is the first chapter of Ethan's book and the first chapter of the next book in the series.

I tried

I really tried to like Skylar but she acts like a spoiled brat, constantly putting everyone around her in danger. Every other scene is the pack asking her not to do something that endangers them and her going off and doing anyways. It also wasn’t even a slow burn romance. I don’t mind it taking awhile but ... ugh. I made it through but it was tough.

I enjoyed the story and plot, but the FMC is annoying and gets worst with time. The romance has so many holes in it and I was hoping it would be explored more.

I was looking for a story I could play in the background as I knitted and this was perfect. The audiobook runs for 52 hours and the story is actually quite interesting.

It introduces a few new things to conquer and learn and unravel in each book, but still draws from the previous books as well.

I thought the relationship with Sky and the MMC in the last 2 books was a little odd?? I mean, it seemed like it would go that way in book 1 and 2 but he was hung up on his ex? Some type of explosive and toxic relationship he was still very very very much hung up on.

So I kind of gave up on them two together. Thought they might just end up as really good friends. I thought Sky might end up eith his brother or Quel or even Sebastian...but then they start developing feelings for each other in book 3 when the ex is turned into a vampire? It just felt convenient. There were a few other convenient oddities like this

But again, I fully fully enjoyed it as background while I knitted. I was kept engaged throughout and was a little sad to see it go

I have submitted this review after listening to the audiobook of this title. (Audible Membership)

She wasn't raised in a were clan, so each lunar month, she was locked in a cage to keep her and everyone else safe.
Then came the night that she lost everything and found out about the others of her kind.
It was an education, but also a time of enlightenment. She learnt her strengths and weaknesses. She found out what community really was.

Darkness Unchained

When both weres and vampires are attacked, an alliance is created.
Combining resources, the animals that attacked and when injured disappeared. Who was their puppet master was the crucial question.

Midnight Falls

When you are adopted and never knew your parents, less alone any extended family, you will likely do anything to learn and become acquainted with those that are blood kin. However, what you find may not be what your dreams were.

Lunar Marked

Some people will do anything to get power. This is a power struggle against species, some of which believe they are above others, merely by the genetics purity.
When it comes down to it, it was a matter of allies and favours owed.

Good plot, semi well written

I'm enjoying the series, though sometimes confused by the convoluted rules of the "otherworld". If you like books about shifters, vampires, witches and the rest of the supernatural worlds you too will like this series. There are a few things in these books that are driving me crazy though. The use of predaceous as a description of shifters...in every discription!! The wishy-washy way the heroine thinks and acts. As I said the plot is good and involved. Don't think I will go past these 4 books just yet, maybe next month.

It's giving watpadd. But at least I finished the set soooo. My opinion. I hate the guy she literally loses her v card to and actively likes honestly the vampire she bonded to or Josh would be a better fit. SO MANY OTHER MEN COULD HAVE BEEN BETTER THAN THE ASSHOLE WHO SLEEPS WITH HIS ON AND OFF AGAIN EX okay. Than what's worse is the fact that the main character is so hated amongst people for just like existing that that makes people stay around her to use her as a pawn?? I just I can't.

Fantastic Series

I’ve really enjoyed the Sky Brooks series so far and have also read 3 of the stories from Ethan’s pov. Great character development and world building. I find myself sneaking away for a few pages here and there throughout the course of the day until I can get back to immersing myself in their world at night. Definitely preferred the Ethan version of book 2 but by book 3 was back to enjoying both pov stories equally.

Per me bocciato.
