Love You Forever #4

How To Break-Up With Your Boss

Rate this book
He’s my billionaire boss from hell—and now he’s my fiancé.
Imagine the devil’s cocky, sexy brother in a three-piece suit.

To say Mondays suck is the understatement of the century.

If there’s one person that can make me hate my very existence,
It’s Matthew Lewis III, Esquire.

He’s the kind of man that makes any sort of rational thought go right out the window—which is exactly what happened when I thought taking a golf club to his car was a good idea.

Did I mention this was after I ripped his prissy ass to shreds and marched out with my middle fingers in the air?

I’m a functioning adult, I swear.

But my victory was short-lived when he shows up at my apartment with an ultimatum.
Either face a felony for destroying his car or pretend for a few short months that I love him.

I just hope he’s ready to give me an Oscar for this performance because pretending to be head over heels for Mr. Prick-On-A-Stick without ending up with a second felony will be a miracle.

But everything changes the moment his wicked tongue takes us from the boardroom to the bedroom and I’m desperately holding on to the last shred of hate I have left for him.

You know how they say there’s a thin line between love and hate?
I think that line might have just disappeared.

Get ready for some serious sass, hatred, and downright dirty sabotage in this page melting new laugh-out-loud romantic comedy stand-alone from bestselling author Alexis Winter! Trust me, you'll think you hate Matthew Lewis III but by the end, you'll be swooning over a very satisfying happily ever after.

Sweet story. Was hilarious in parts, mostly the beginning. But was way to soppy for me. Matthew went on a bit, they both did.

Started out fun but became a bit of a bore.

Cute romance - ok read, little angst. I loved the way the h one up H/boss lol
Loved that the h was not tsl and no cheating or OW/OM drama. H had crappy father but loved the grandma. Not a lot of angst so was a bit tepid for me but overall was not bad, sweet after the dark reads lately lol

This is the only book so far in this series I didn't like. I never really cared much for either Poppy or Matthew. They were too different and Poppy just seemed childish a lot. The good news is that in the end it works for them and they are happy.

This was wonderful! Starting off with Poppy who can't seem to be on time to save her life, and I can totally understand this I have those days. Dealing with a mean boss never helps, I honestly wanted to hate him and kind of did at the beginning. There was humor, passion, family drama, and lots of fun in this story. I strongly recommend this book, you will not be sorry.

It was an okay read. I was in the mood for a lighter read, and this was perfect i thought. But i missed a bit history between them, the beginning was a fun read, but then it just kind of did go down and it wasnt fun.

I thought and hoped that this was a different funny book, a bit of comedy and belly laugh. But not really, but it is a nice book!

Didn't really like the H much to begin with and I thought the h was a bit immature in the beginning also. But they grew on me and I enjoyed the book.

Alexis Winter has written a 5-star book. Poppy is fed up with the way Matthew Lewis III treats her at work. He never has a kind word to say to her. One morning she is late 2 minutes and when she gets to her office, he is there waiting on her. He asks "What is your excuse this time?" She gives him some smart answer. She says something about his name and he fires her. As she is leaving the office, she sees his golf clubs. She takes one and when she gets downstairs to his car, she smashes out all his lights. She is ready to go when she thinks of something else to do. She climbs onto his car and smashes out his windshield. She is spotted by security and she throws the golf club down and runs to her car and leaves. Matthew is called and told what happened, the security guys have it on video and he asks that he been sent a copy. Matthew goes to Poppy's apartment and when she sees who is at the door, she doesn't answer. He tells her that he knows she is at home so she needs to open the door. She asks him "What are you doing here? I think we need to talk." I think we have talked enough. "I think you need to hear me out." "Why would I want to do something stupid like that?" Simple, Matthew said as he pulls his phone out and flips his screen so she could see it. "If you don't, I'll press charges." She looks from him to his screen and she knows she is screwed. Fine, she opens the door. This place is not very safe. Thank you, Mr. Lewis, but I can take care of myself. " Why are you here?" Simple, you need me and I need you. Why do I need you? He tells her that his grandmother who is very special to him is dying and the one thing she wants is to see him married. Poppy tells him that she is not going to marry him. He said all he needs for her to do is pretend to be his fiancee for a while. Poppy has to agree with Matthew or he will turn her in for smashing up his car. Matthew tells her to pack her stuff that she will need since she is going to be staying at his place. At first, things don't go well for them, she does everything she can to make him mad. After a while of being together something changes between them and they start being nice to each other. Matthew has realized that he has wanted Poppy since her first day at work. She has changed at work also, before she did not have things ready for him now she has them ready. They have a standing dinner with his grandmother every Friday night and brunch with her on Sunday. Their relationship changes again when the attraction between them comes out and Matthew stops them from going further than they had been doing. The brunch with Matthew's grandmother does not go well, since his father shows up and causes a disagreement. Matthew and Poppy have not talked in four days and it is driving Matthew nuts. He wants things to go back to the way they were with them getting along. He decides to take her on a vacation. He takes her to the island his grandmother owns and they grow closer and Poppy thinks that this is Matthew's way of saying goodbye. Matthew knows that something is wrong and he asks Poppy "what is wrong?" She tells him and he tells her she is so wrong to believe that. They had a fake engagement before but now it is a real one. Things are going well for them until they go to a party for a friend of Matthew's. When there she hears somethings that make her feel out of place. She is not rich like Matthew and she will never be. She leaves the party and goes back to the apartment and packs her stuff and goes back to her apartment. Matthew is looking for Poppy and he sees an ex-girlfriend and asks if she said anything to Poppy? she said no, but wants to know how he is engaged to Poppy now when just a few months ago she was the one in his bed. He goes home and looks for Poppy but he sees her things are gone. He goes to her apartment. When he knocks, she tells him to go away because they are over. She tells him that she doesn't want to have someone tell her to go to the gym and go to parties where she is going to have to play nice whey they won't be. She tells him that she doesn't belong in his world and never will. Matthew tells her that he doesn't want that world anymore. He tells her that he doesn't want to live without her and he will do whatever he needs to make her happy.
Will Poppy and Matthew stay together or will Poppy send him away for good?
This was a wonderful book and I would recommend this book to anyone.

The Devil and the Paintball Queen

When Matt Lewis chose to go into private law practice with his friend Daniel Smith, he knew that moment should have been applauded as a fulfillment of his academic and professional goals—a personal achievement to be applauded by friends and family.

And for most fathers, Matt’s achievements would have provided bragging rights for a proud father. But Matt’s dad is Matthew Lewis II, and the only acceptable pathway for Matthew Lewis III is to follow his father, as Matthew II had followed his father into a controlling position of the family business. And, while Matt was carefully trained and educated to fulfill the generational expectations, it was not his will or his way.

And while he doesn’t mind rocking his dad’s boat, he cannot imagine not fulfilling the wishes of his grandmother, his dad’s mom, and the woman who had nurtured and cared for Matt after the death of his mom. So, when his ailing grandmother expresses the desire to see him married with a family, Matt who is not currently involved with anyone, especially none of the women whom his father deemed “acceptable” by possessing the proper bloodlines and bank accounts, comes up with a plan to both please his grandmother and infuriate his dad.

Poppy Russell, the auburn haired, green-eyed small-town girl and recent college graduate has moved to the big city of Chicago to find work. And she thinks that she has scored when she passes muster and is offered the position as PA for Matthew Lewis, III—a fine looking man. But before she had spent a full day on the job she learned that the boss whom she thought was so fine to look at was in fact the devil with blue blood and no understanding of how the “other half” live. She had become the PA for Satan’s son—Satan’s handsome, drop your panties and get down of your knees, tall, dark and oh so handsome—son. But even if her boss is eye candy, extended time in his presence gives her an ache in her head, her stomach—and other parts not to be named.

After just a few days on the job with her, Poppy discovers that Matthew is automaton with unrealistic expectations of any mere mortal, and especially for her. So, when he snaps at her for some trivial issue like being late for the third day in a row, she snaps back, and that son of Satan fires her. And, when Poppy snaps, retribution results. The weapon—his own golf club. The object of her ire—the lights—head and tail—as well as the windshield—of the Satan III’s precious, priceless sports car. How sweet!

But no good deed—or bad deed—goes unpunished. And while she escapes the scene of the crime, the garage has cameras and an attendant is an eye witness to her complete meltdown and assault on the vehicle worth more than all her unpaid college loans. And Satan comes calling for payment—or an agreement to an absurd deal—she is to play the role of his fiancé to allow the devoted grandson to bring comfort and happiness to his beloved grandmother during her final days. Somehow the two need to be able to blend and sell the romance of the country club blue blood with the small-town paintball queen.

Breaking up with My Boss continues the story of friends and families centered in and around Chicago who are united in friendship, proximity, and love. Following the loves and friendships of a group of guys including Daniel Smith and Calvin Young, and now Matt is entertaining, but knowledge of those stories is not required to enjoy or engage in this new read. The novel weaves a strong storyline with interesting characters and electrifying emotional connections, continuing to offer the reader romantic developments as individuals seek to juggle the demands of very different values and lives, but who are united with a shared love. Each novel can be read independently, but the widening group of friends is so engaging that the reader will want to know each friend and his story.

I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review ARCS, but I enjoyed the reading experience so much that I bought a copy for my "read-again" titles.

Breaking Up With My Boss is the fourth book in the Love You Forever series by Alexis Winter. Although it is part of a series, this book can be read as a complete stand alone, is told from alternating POV and is complete with a sweet HEA.

In Breaking Up With My Boss, we are introduced to Matthew Lewis III- a rich, uptight and control freak lawyer and Poppy- his sassy and ever un-punctual secretary. When I say that this story has a little bit of everything, I mean that it touches in quite a few of the different story tropes. At first impression, BUWMB seems like it falls into the enemies to lovers category. Initially, Matthew hates Poppy because she can't ever seem to do anything right and because he is attracted to her and she is resistant to all of his normal charm. Poppy equally dislikes Matthew because to her, he is nothing more than an entitled rich boy who always wants his way and she hates that she is also attracted to him. The story then leads us into the fake fiance category- when Matthew uses leverage from an outburst that Poppy has to get her to agree to be his fake fiance to appease his dying grandmother's wish to see him get married. The story also seems to touch into the category that Matthew and Poppy are from two different worlds- he comes from a world of privilege and wealth while Poppy has struggled to get by her entire life.

I really enjoyed Matthew and Poppy's story- but it wasn't my favorite of the series. I loved the silly moments in the book where Poppy was quick with her wit and banter and how she began to open up a new world for Matthew by showing him a little of what it was like to grow up without everything being handed to you. From getting messy with paintball or going "muddin" to the simplicity of eating dinner on the couch while watching a movie, Poppy helped Matthew become more like a regular person. I adored the changes that I saw in Matthew's character- how he became softer and more caring. He fell hard and fast for Poppy and it was so sweet to see. I didn't love however that it seemed like it was all Matthew that had to change in the relationship. I understand that he had the most that needed to change since he was bitter and mean in the beginning- but I felt like there should have been some change in Poppy too, other than just enjoying the new lifestyle and being nicer to Matthew because she was falling in love with him as well.

Initially, I didn’t love the characters and had a hard time rooting for them. Although the characters harbor a secret crush on each other, it is far overshadowed by their contempt. He sees her as a lazy employee who is always late and can’t even order a sandwich correctly. She sees him as rude, bossy and more than a little condescending.

After Poppy loses her cool and damages Mathews’ car, he uses blackmail and the threat of jail to get her to pose as his fake girlfriend. After she moves in I did like that she continues to fight him to remain her own person. Unfortunately he is so controlling, and not in a hot alpha way, just more of a controlling “I’m going to change you into the kind of person I want you to be” type way. From insisting she goto the gym and workout, to full body wax (ouch!), to choosing the color for her manicure (nude beige), as well as deciding what she should order/ eat. When she repolished her nails to a color of her choosing, more “her”, he flipped the freak out. Over. Nail. Polish. Color...

My favorite part of the book was after he took her yachting (again, choosing what she had to wear), she took him to her favorite stomping ground which was all kinds of awesome and made me love Poppy.

Needless to say, as the book goes on and they spend more time together, you see him change and become a much better person. He also acknowledges the fact he was such a jerk early on, which makes me feel a bit better about how much I initially disliked him. In the end he was completely head over heels in love and would do absolutely anything to make Poppy happy. He did go from one extreme (strong dislike of Poppy) to the other (over the top in love), which took a while to believe, but the ending is very, very sweet.

There's a little Cinderella and Pride and Prejudice in this story

Ultimately this is a blend of Cinderella and Pride and Prejudice. But in this story, while the heroine does come from a humble and slightly impoverished background, her parents a normal, sweet and loving (the don't appear much in this story). It's the H who comes from a privileged background that has the wicked father. The father is ruthless and deems anyone not of his social and financial circle beneath him and not worth his attention...appearances must be kept. He's raised his son (the H) that way and in that environment. He wants his son to work for him and ultimately take over the family business started by the paternal grandfather. But the H, while he believes he wants that world, he doesn't want to be under his father's thumb and wants to make it on his own (with a trust fund from grandma).

The beginning of this story makes the heroine seem irresponsible and childish, and you think the H's attitude justified. In the first few pages, I didn't like her. But you soon discover that her bad attitude fed off his and that his stemmed from an instant attraction to her that he's been fighting ever since she came to work for him as he never intends to get involved, settle down or marry. His reticence to relationships and marriage stems from what he's witnessed with his parents and in his social circle.

Circumstances allow him to coerce her into agreeing to be his fake fiance for the benefit of his grandmother, who might be dying. What ensues is a delightful, heartwarming story of two people discovering themselves and each other as they learn to navigate both their worlds and what they really want of life and where they truly belong.

Fun and steamy

This book was definitely fun. Well, she was fun. They had some steamy scenes.

Poppy has some immature behavior early in the book. Matt is rather high handed in a way not many women would tolerate. He books her gym appointments with a trainer saying anyone he would be engaged to would be in better shape. He demands she be at dinner at 7 PM every night. For an arrangement, that's kind of OK but in a relationship, absolutely not. And he acts a little immaturely, too. They both leave that behind, though.

I enjoyed their book. The part after they decide to stay together could have been shortened. The epilogue was good.

In all of these books, people drink and drive. Some of them almost certainly would have been fine but some of them seem to have had a fair bit of liquor and still drove. I am good with suspension of disbelief but I think society as a whole needs to frown on DUIs even if people wouldn't quite hit the legal limit. It is really disappointing to see this in a book.

Spoiler

Matt buys them a house without her knowledge. I don't see this as romantic or taking care of her. I see this as thinking he knows best or thinks he knows what she needs. I would never allow my husband to buy us a house without me at least seeing pictures. In a book later in the series, a couple builds a house and she doesn't even know it is in the style of a log cabin until it is almost done. Something like a couple of weeks from being done. What if she hated that style? Why wouldn't they have been monitoring the progress? There's a lot of stuff like that in these books. They are misogynistic. In that same book, it is assumed the man will take over the business not the woman.

Beginning this book to experience Poppy and Matthew's story and relationship development is a bit daunting, and for reasons I wasn't entirely sure of, I did not like the first two chapters. But, keep going. Around page 3 of the 1st chapter I began my laughs….Matthew insinuating Poppy’s lie about being late to work, AGAIN, was hilarious. Rescuing 20 children and then trying to hide from the media…yeah, funny. However, Poppy’s communication with him was weird and unrealistic when you consider that the guy is her boss. She made a big deal of being respectful of his name and touting “Mr.” this, “Mr.” that, but would fly off and say something completely inappropriate in the next breath. His toleration of it was off, as well. He finally firing her was appropriate and I actually like the way his reaction to her yelling was written. Her reaction upon leaving was great, too. I did like the writing detailing her trashing his vehicle.

I think, for the most part, an understanding for me of why chapter one read like it did is explained in the other chapters. Finding out how they each feel about each other or at least see one another in the following chapters brings sense to chapter 1 and 2 relationship theatrics. Chapter 3 was the true beginning of fun for me with these two characters.

The writing gets better and better as the characters have to work to get along in their new “relationship”. You will love this book, and you will have fun with their story. Writing is fantastic!

3.75 ⭐️

Poppy was a great FMC to read about strong, independent and badass for sure! Especially with what she does! I was proud of her and glad she did what she did.

Matthew was definitely a arrogant, cocky douchebag in the beginning. But as the story went on you got to see those layers being pulled away to reveal a side of him that you wouldn’t have expected to see.

Poppy and Matthew were definitely made for each other. You could see it in their chemistry and the fact that Poppy bought out a side to Matthew that he didn’t know he had.

There was some moments that had me laughing, especially near the beginning. It was also sweet, cute, romantic, hot, annoying and a whole load of other feelings and emotions.
However, there didn’t seem to be a big climax moment like in the other books. It was lacking drama, which is what helps the story come together. What little drama there was that was suppose to lead to the climax fizzled out before it could even grow fully and then explode.
I guess that is why the book had me feeling disconnected from it at times. Not to say it was bad because it wasn’t. But in comparison to the previous books in this series, I would have to say it was my least favourite.

Overall, a good read and would recommend if you have read any of the other books in the Love You Forever series!

Poppy and Matthew are opposites attract kind of story. Poppy works for Matthew and when she is late yet again he fires her. Poppy gets enraged when she leaves and smashes his windows out of his car. She is caught on camera and also by the guards. She runs away from the scene. Matthew is contacted and given the tape of the act being done. Matthew shows up at Poppy's apartment and convinces her to be his fake fiancee for his sickly grandma's sake. Poppy does everything she can get Matthew mad at her all the time. Over time they start to get along and play nice. Matthew's father shows up for a meal and things are revealed and Poppy and Matthew do not speak for days. Matthew takes Poppy to his grandma's island to get their spark back. While there he takes her to a party and Poppy overhears things that make her uncomfortable. Poppy leaves and goes and packs her things from is the place and returns home. Matthew is at a loss of why this has happened. When Poppy tells Matthew he tells her he wants her back and he doesn't want this life he has just her. Matthew will have to prove he wants Poppy. Will Poppy fall back for Matthew? Or will she push him away.

Poppy has had enough of her crappy job, working as the assistant to Matthew Lewis III. He is rude, arrogant and infuriates her on a regular basis. Two minutes late for work again he is on her case, which doesn’t improve when he ends up with the wrong mayo in his sandwich. She gives him both barrels and is promptly fired, eyeing his golf clubs she sets about smashing up his car (his prized possession).

Matthew can’t believe that Poppy let rip on his car and heads over to her flat to confront her. Blackmailing her into a fake romance for his grandmother’s sake and he won’t send the footage to the police. Moving into his penthouse they attempt to get to know more about each other. This leads to more sniping from each other, but they slowly manage to find a way to be civic. Matthew dropping his guard and Poppy warming to him they opt to give into their feelings and blur the lines between what is fake and what is real.

With Matthew’s father not impressed by his match he sets out to cause them trouble, but are they strong enough to overcome the difficulties? Are there true feelings at play here or is it all just fake?

A man who always gets what he wants.

This book grows on you. I really didn't like seeing Matthew's manipulation in the beginning. The story just didn't flow at first, maybe I had a hard time jumping from Poppy being fired to him showing up at her place and forcing her to move in with him and pretend to be engaged. I would have liked to see a lot more of their relationship and the explosive butting of heads that was implied.

Once you get past the first couple chapters and start to get a feel for both Poppy and Matthew the pieces fall into place. This is a true story of how opposites attract and how embracing those difference instead of just trying to change them actually make both parties better. Matthew's family added a new dynamic and you could understand him better after being introduced to his father. Poppy shows so much more spunk in her internal monologue that only the reader is privy too. I really liked how she continued to find ways to be herself, even something as small as repainting her nails (not so small from Matthew's POV!).

Let me start by saying wow.

This book gripped me from the very beginning.
Matthew and Poppy's story was well wow. This book had me crying with laughter at quite a few points it also had me crying with emotion at the words and descriptions used.

This book shows that class and the life you were brought into don't mean a thing. Its the person you are and the person you become. Not only that but the person who you love and loves you.

Matthew was a rich arrogant boss who thought he was better than anyone else but couldn't have the one thing he wanted. Poppy was his assistant who took no crap knew who she was and wasn't going to let it affect her.

That scene on the beginning with his car was the best scene for me and I can just imagine it happening in real life but the way the story unfolds is truly beautiful its a magical journey of discovery for both characters and the outcome and final words spoken are breath taking.

Thank you Alexis I loved reading this book in all its glory it was just incredible.

4.5 Stars!
Enemies-to-lovers / fake relationship / grumpy boss romance - it's got it all!

Poppy - the feisty, albeit slightly disorganised, assistant to Matthew Lewis III. After she's once again late to work, her boss has had enough and fires her, however she's not going to leave quietly. She decides to take it out on his favourite car...with his own golf clubs!

Matthew - on the surface he's your typical grumpy, entitled boss. Yet underneath that façade lies the undeniable attraction he has to Poppy. Rather than going to the police, he gets his 'revenge' by blackmailing Poppy into pretending to be his fiancé to please his ill grandmother.

As their pretence goes on, can they ignore the sparks that seem to have always been there? Especially when lines start to blur between fake and real. On top of their battle of wills, they also have to deal with Matthew Lewis II, the father who doesn't approve of a lowly assistant for his son. Can true love win the day?

4.5 stars instead of 5, only because the conflict seem to resolve a bit too quickly for my liking. But overall a really nice, low angst read.

No cheating. No cliffhanger. HEA guaranteed.

Poppy works for Matthew and even though she feels an attraction to him she hates him because of the way he acts to her. Matthew is attracted to Poppy but gets annoyed by the way she works, she's not organised, she's late and messy and because he thinks she hates him he treats her like he hates her.
One day Poppy tells Matthew exactly what she thinks of him so he fires her. Poppy takes her revenge out on his sports car using his own golf club.
After finding out what Poppy did, Matthew blackmails Poppy into acting as his fake fiance or else he'll report her to the Police.
Spending time together helps them both get to know one another and their attraction grows. But will Poppy be able to admit her feelings to Matthew and be able to live with him in a rich lifestyle that she doesn't feel she belongs in.

Very good story, enjoyed the characters interactions throughout. Would definitely recommend reading this book.

Matthew is Poppy's boss and they are attracted to each other, but neither will admit to this. Therefore, they do things that will annoy the other in many different ways. As the final straw Matthew fires Poppy and she pays him back by smashing his car with one of his golf clubs. He goes to her apartment and makes a deal - he won't go to the police is she becomes his fake fiancé, she doesn't have much of a choice if she doesn't want to be thrown in jail. At first they continue as they had in the office, but soon develop an understanding of each other on top of their mutual attraction. It isn't long before things steam up and start to become real.

I really enjoyed this 4th book Alexis Winters'; Love you Forever series. It made me laugh a number of times and kept my attention throughout. It was enjoyable throughout! There was laughter, a little bit of loathing towards one of Matthew's relatives and plenty of steam. What more could you want!

Matthew was Poppy's boss and they did everything they could to push each other's buttons. After she finally pushes him a little too far, he fires her. As she leaves, she retaliates which leaves her in a precarious situation which means she has to go along with his crazy plan I loved the banter between the two of them. Even as they grew closer the fire still remained between them. I adored Matthew's grandmother and how she and Poppy bonded. Dislike would be too mild a term for how I felt about his father. Love wins out in the end and Poppy and Matthew will have a happy life ahead of them. I didn't realize until towards the end of the book that Daniel was the same Daniel that is engaged to Luna and worked with Calvin. Calvin is the boss that lives elsewhere and Matthew is an attorney in the office with Daniel. I thoroughly enjoyed Calvin's and Daniel's books so it is no surprise I enjoyed this one too. I hope Foster is next to get a book and that he can get a HEA instead of being in an arranged marriage.

Where to start?!? This was such a fun read, really enjoyed it!! The tension between the main characters really grabbed me.
Poppy is a bit unorganized. She’s always late, making up pathetic excuses and is not good at multitasking at all!! Working in a law office for someone she considers a tyrant doesn’t make things easier.
Matthew is a successful lawyer. Unlike his secretary, he is always on time and on top of things. He can’t understand why all people can’t multitask!! He constantly frustrated by Poppy, so they don’t have a good relationship. His law partner Daniel thinks it might be due to the fact that Matthew is attracted to her.
They both finally hit their limit and Poppy leaves in a very abrupt exit. Unfortunately for her, it’s been recorded and Matthew has a copy and plans to use it to his advantage. Maybe spending time with her outside work will bring them close or get her out of his system...

Breaking up with my boss. This is a good story to read! I found myself wrapped up in the story waiting to see if Poppy and Matthew will be truthful with each other and commit to a real relationship. Matthew is stuck in a promise he made to his grandmother to marry before she dies, but he has no prospects. He does have a crush on his secretary Poppy, but they can't get along at work. When he yells at Poppy for being late and not organized, he fires her. Poppy gets so mad so she does something that would land her in jail. Matthew decides to use that to his favor and blackmail Poppy into being his fiancé to keep Matthew's grandmother's promise. Now Poppy has to be nice to her boss even though she can't stand him and his rich lifestyle. The story was exciting and romantic but torturous for both of them at first. Love can conquer all situations if you want it to. I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review. *** I voluntarily read a Review Copy of this book. So a bit of blackmail to get these two together is not why it’s 3/5 for me.

The editing and plot holes did it for me. The “pronounce you husband and wife” where the pastor left out “husband” during a wedding scene. The fight at dinner where the date was forgotten almost as soon as she was introduced which is weird considering the man that brought her was walked off as it’s polite to see your guests leave ..... so did she stay or leave? It’s odd thing but the first time the have sex there is a condom and then, nothing. No talk of protection or what nots. I get it’s a short book but their relationship was to have an end date and babies don’t scream ending. Unless you count your sleep life. Bye bye sleep. And how about Poppy has NO friends! Not once was it mentioned she had friends, she called someone, went out shopping with anyone but herself. She’s supposed to be an amazing person but has zero friends and no social life? Well after she turned 20 as she was into things in her teens. At least her parents made an appearance and excuses were made for their late to story.

Matthew is a spoiled rich lawyer with a trust fund who hates/secretly loves his assistant Poppy. Poppy has humble upbringing and a poor work ethic. These two constantly fight but that only happens to hide their attraction to each other. Matthew fires poppy and she looses it, she beats his precious car in with his own golf club! Matthew blackmails her to be his fiance and after they constantly bicker, and matthew has me in tears by buying her a gym membership and other classes to "class her up" he finally manages to pull his head out of his back end with help from poppy. She manages to get her head on straight to and these two set the world on fire with their passion. Absolutely amazing read, couldn't put it down! Love this author and this story, no cheating and a sweet HEA!

Matt and Poppy are just wonderful characters.

From the beginning of the story I was team Matthew With the attraction he felt towards Poppy and with the lack of responsibility from her, he was sure to snap at any time. When he finally had enough, he fires her.

Poppy had to see that coming, can she really blame Matt?
She doesn’t react very well to been fired and she lets Matt knows, not only that but she does something that when Matthew finds out he sees an opportunity and takes it.
After all in war and in love anything goes

A character a really like besides the H and h is grandma and the one I really truly dislike was Matts’ father.

A quote that I really like ‘.... if you have your other half, hold onto them. Don’t let the pressures of the world get you down or tear you apart.’

I loved reading Breaking Up With My Boss by Alexis Winter because it was a very funny, very romantic story about Matthew and Poppy. They work together and it is tense to say the least. Matthew is Poppy's boss and she dislikes him so much and vice versa. She does something on the verge of criminal activity and he blackmails her into a fake relationship. But it somehow turns into something else. Poppy is fun and vibrant and she works hard. Matthew is kind of a stick in the mud and all about being prim and proper. They are perfect for each other, but each of them has doubts. I love Matthew's grandmother. She is a hoot. Don't really care for his dad. I wondered while reading, if they would get their happy ending. I would highly recommend reading this book. Great story!!!
