Rate this book
In this wild and witty series, the wallflower always wins... The rakes, rogues, and dukes won't know what's hit them...

Lady Pippa Post is one of London's most woeful wallflowers. With a father who has lost it all and an intellect as sharp as a cutlass, she's firmly on the shelf.

But Pippa has no desire to retire to a wilting life in the country, even if she adores learning dead languages and pouring over ancient tomes. So, when a position opens, curating the Earl of Roxly's ever growing Egyptian collection, she knows exactly what must be done. But she doesn't expect that Roxly's rugged demeanor and wicked wit will entice her into a game of passion.

Lord David Drake, Earl of Roxly, has no time for shrinking violets. He has no time for Londoners at all! He's a man of power, passion, and purpose. In but a short time, he is determined to leave English shores behind and return to the Nile he loves so well... But when a waspish wallflower shows up, determined to take care of his artifacts, he's intrigued and shocked to find that she is a mystery to be discovered... And adventurer that he is, there's nothing Roxly loves more than a mystery.

Will Pippa shrink from a chance at love with this wild brute of a lord... or will the wallflower wed?

This book has a serious potential. The original idea is there and strong. A wallflower went away to become an Egyptian historian's assistant without her father's knowledge. The guy was grumpy and love-sceptic meanwhile she was this efficient, bubbly and understanding.

There was forced proximity since the whole households went to holiday or something. It was the perfect setting for a budding romance!

I kinda like the villain, he was interesting (my depraved side wants a story with him as the hero). I love the whole side plot with the Egyptian tombs, maps and stuffs (though I want more of these adventures).

However, it has few issues. I wish it was a little bit longer. I wish it could have more scenes where they get to know each other. I wish we have more side characters (they were alone for a lot of the times in this). I wish we have more back stories and characters development. I wish they went on an adventure in Egypt.

It had strong stuffs, entertwined with weak plots. But, since this was more than I expected, I surprisingly like it.

The Way the Wallflower Wed por Eva Devon

Argumento:

Dnf at 20%. I couldn't take it. The author just described how erotic cutting bread is, but described in a way that sounded clinical. For about 15 pages. Not only is bread pretty much not exciting, but then to write it like stereo instructions made it even worse. "He put one of his hands on the bread, and she could not help but notice how strong and firm it was. His hand. Not the bread. The width and length of his fingers sent the most delicious wave through her. The nimbleness of them as the placed his palm on the hard crust was most intriguing."

Then once the bread is cut, the character makes a sandwich. "And with that, she whipped off the linen cloth from the plate and spotted the most delicious cheese agreed ever seen. The strong, but inviting scent wafted towards her, and she found she could hardly wait to bite it."

Just... What?!? The whole book is like that. The language is just laughably ridiculous.

The first half of the story was quite good: Pippa is tired of being a wallflower so she made a pact with her 3 other wallflowers friends: they will start living their lives now lol!
So Pippa who is fan of artifacts and Egypt applies to be the assistant of Marcus, earl of Roxley. She doesn't disclose she is a woman so he is expecting a man to show up and of course, their first meeting is quite tense.
But they discover they share a passion for history, and they become attracted to each other. It was sweet... until the story starts focusing on a Roxley's nemesis!
The focus was not on the romance anymore but on artifacts this, Egypt that... and nemesis being a ridiculous vilain who didn't make sense!

I found myself skimming the last chapters because I lost interest.

This is a lovely story and enjoyable too, but not one of my faves. For me, it felt like there was something missing. I think it was Pippa and Roxley's relationship. Not enough love flowing between them until Pippa was stabbed. 4☆

Had potential but was not the book for me. Pippa seeks independence and applies for a job working as an assistant for Marcus, an Earl. While there is romance, the story came off to me as focusing more on Marcus’s work with Egyptian artifacts, and a rivilary with the Earl of Westmore. With a splash of romance.

In general, the focus on exploration tied with colonization made this difficult for me. Even though, Marcus, the Earl of Roxley, does talk about the importance of preserving history and wanting to take items back to Egypt - the dark history of colonization, and exploration made it hard for me to connect with the story personally. I think there was a great deal of realism to not romantize some of the consequences of exploration (which I appreciated), but still a touchy subject for me.

Think there could've been more development and buildup between Marcus and Pippa. A quick read - while this is not my favorite I'm giving the series a shot and continuing onward.

Probably a 2.5 rounded up.

I loved another book by this author, but I found the writing in this book very strange. The H and h were both odd to me, extremely similar in character, so self absorbed. The h was quite ridiculous, his actions toward the end were also quite silly. I liked the idea of the plot, but the execution was not good. Very disappointing.

Normally really like Eva Devon's books. This one not my favorite. I wasn't feeling the characters. They had no depth, no personality. I read it fast just to finish it up. Even though I don't like unnecessary details in books I also hate when they mention something then don't go back to "clean" it up.

While the book was well written and I was intrigued to continue reading the story for what it was, I felt that there was a huge chunk missing in the middle of the book and everything was rushed. The heroine shows up at an earl’s door while his staff in conveniently ALL on vacation. He immediately agrees to accept her as his assistant for a trial period despite her being a woman’s and being all alone in a house together in that time period. No real questions of what a well bred, well educated lady was doing on his doorstep, soaking wet and alone in the rain, looking for employment. None of the other assistants he hired had worked out and she seemed competent. I found it very far fetched for the time period especially since she was a well educated woman and all alone and he never went out to hire a chaperone or anything while they were going to be alone together. Additionally, within days they were sleeping together. He takes her virginity and she doesn’t even mention that beforehand, during or after. Her Father shows up later at the door and never demands the “hero” marry her for her being in his house for what was weeks or months?! Instead the father locks her up and tries to marry her off to the “hero”’s sworn enemy. The “hero” could have told the father they’d already slept together in order for the father to agree for her to marry him like they both wanted but he never used that piece or information nor did the heroine. The ending is wrapped up way too quickly as well. The main characters were sickening sweet to each other despite them being considered weirdos, outspoken, and grumpy by the ton. He was only a bit rude to her in the very beginning. I would have enjoyed a more “slow burn” type book where they slowly get to know each other and both of their walls come down as they form a friendship with each other while they worked together and then later have the attraction build even more. It was like go, go, go, go the whole time. It just wasn’t my cup of tea.

Miss Pippa Post is a wallflower and firmly on the shelf. That does not keep her from sneaking away from her horrible father & her mother and leave London to apply for an assistant position curating the Earl of Roxley's Egyptian collection. He does not know she is a female as she signed her credentials as M. Post, but he will soon discover that fact. She is strong & confident - knows several language and has read as many ancient tomes as she could get hold of to read - all she had to do is convince him that a female could do the job as assistant.

The Earl of Roxley is a powerful man & has a passion to save the tombs in Egypt from being looted with artifacts being sold to rich Londoners that displayed them in their homes as though they were nothing but knick-knacks. He needs to get his collection catalogued and organized & that is where M. Post comes into the picture. He has interviewed more than thirty men to do the job & none had the brains or passion to follow the procedures.

When Roxley answers the knock at his door he is met with a vision of a drowned rat. Pippa was dropped at the road and had to walk his long driveway, in the pouring rain, to the front door. The road to their HEA is full of passion for history, there are villains - her father & another earl, witty dialogue, friendship, and then fiery romance. I highly recommend this first book in Ms. Devon new series and I am looking forward to the next one.

This book is with Isaac, Rarchad, Rachard, Lasignia, Rashad: they were people who always said things that were very bad and very sober, somberly and very depressive, I here is the ego, and me is the object, and myself is possessive and very obsessive, looking for escape, it is literature without any litany of problems very neutral in a black perception that is a male orientated pointed black dot loophole existence, all these name are my husbands and they are all brothers who are sexual with me, we are in the union church and the new york celeste decorative mosque where is a place to read and enjoy literature without academia and school of thoughts, why the feminine author's name? Because it is my husbands voices who are dominant and my body is their artwork like Hip Hip, Rap, Grap music, Hacsen is perch and mesothampiam, he is my boyfriend in the 90s and founder of nothing uniform at the union church, he is film maker who is amazing and he is sunlife who is very casual not serious and not important focused, he is not with FBI, CIA and black resistance. The family is pacifist and idealism is a way of life.

This interesting, amusing, romantic and suspenseful. Pippa decided that she had had enough of polite society and was going to strike out on her own. She applies for, and gets an interview for, a job as an assistant to an Earl cataloguing Egyptian artifacts. It's something that both intrigues and excites her. Marcus was not expecting a woman to show up at his home claiming to have an appointment. When he realizes that he did indeed receive an application from her he decides to give her a chance. Giving her work that most would find daunting, she thrives on it, and wins him over. But before they can do much his nemesis, and former best friend, is interfering with their work. Marcus is completely dedicated to Egyptian artifacts, cataloguing them, then burying them again. He has no interest in having a wife, or a life in England. Pippa is determined to be her own woman, and do something important. He's a little stiff, she's excitable in many ways. They balance each other beautifully. I can't wait to read the rest of the series.

The Way the Wallflower Wed by Eva Devon
The Wallflower Wins Series Book One
Lady Pippa Post is taking her life into her own hands. She is going to be free. Free of her parents and society. Along with her three friends, they make a pact to find their places in the world. And Pippa's is to go and work for the Earl of Roxley as his assistant.

Lord Marcus Drake, Earl of Roxley, cannot find a competent assistant. When a drenched young woman shows up at his door...he almost turns her away, but he does not judge on the sex of a person, so he gives her a chance.

Pippa and Marcus both love history more than the present...and, the artifacts of the past more than people. So they get on quite well. Only...maybe there is something in the present that both of them find they do like... I enjoyed the story and look forward to more in this series.

Miss Pippa Post and three of her friends are determined to control their own lives. As wallflowers, now considered firmly on the shelf they each have a seperate plan for the future.

Our heroine is an intelligent and capable young woman with a love of historical artefacts and Egypt. So that's what she hopes to learn about in the position she applied for.

Marcus Drake, Earl of Roxley is an archeologist who believes we can learn from historical civilizations without destroying or looting from them.  He wants to protect and preserve as much as he can.

Our hero has no time for, or interest in the normal rules of what's considered polite society. He does what he wants. So he will hire the most capable assistant available.

An unusual historical romance with surprising actions from our characters.

This is the first book in what is obviously a four book series.  I am looking forward to reading the others.

Good fun.

The concept was great and I was really looking forward to this one. But it turned into my first 2 star book of the year.

When I started reading, it felt like I was missing a scene with the wallflowers. The author should have shown us the conversation they had, to decide to live their lives to the fullest. Instead, we jumped forward to the wallflowers leaving to follow their own paths. There was no context as to how we got to that point.

I enjoyed most of the story when Pippa is at Marcus's house as his assistant. I did get bored of it by the 30% mark and it didn't pick up again until I was more than halfway through. I considered dnf-ing this one, but the good reviews made me read on.

The latter half of the book is about Marcus's enemy. Westmore is jealous and wants everything Marcus has. There is no more romance until the last couple chapters after Pippa gets injured.

I really liked both Pippa and Marcus as characters, but this book was all over the place for me.

Interesting, refreshing, realistic characters!

This is a delightful, refreshing story!Convinced she has nothing to lose and everything to gain, determined and plucky Pippa goes after her unconventional dream with honesty, aplomb, and logic! Her desired employer is the recognized expert in Egyptology, Lord Roxley. He's abrupt, direct, and demanding, but equally unconventional and open to logic and reason. Pippa's erudition and like-mindedness persuade him to overlook the fact she's a woman and give her a day to prove her capabilities. He doubts she'll last the 24 hours. But of course, she surprises him. And so begins a solid partnership and an unexpected personal relationship in which their honesty with, and understanding of, each other opens the door to an aspect of life neither expected.

She insisted on the truth

Poppa Post was a remarkable young lady. But so were her three friends. None of them was willing to settle for the restrictive life society claimed she must lead. Pippa was a force of nature once she set herself a goal and, with her love of history and Egypt, it only made sense that she should his herself off to the wilds of Cornwall and convince the feasible earl that she would make an excellent assistant to help him catalog the artifacts he brought back from Egypt... and the rest is history. A delightful read.

It was interesting

Villain is one note. The British way of viewing items from Egypt is still held to this day with the British Museum owning a very large Egyptian collection. Even after Egypt has spent centuries trying to get the artifacts back. The idea that he and she held a very modern view is almost laughable. European archeologists still dig for specific eras with no mind to disturbing the later history of the sight. A Edwardian or Tudor structure can easily be disturbed and discarded to get to a layer of earlier habitation.

The wallflowers have resolved to live their dreams and Pippa Post is first to take off on hers. She applies as M. Post for a position as curator of a collection of Egyptian artifacts. The Earl of Roxbury was not expecting a woman of course. But Pippa awes him by translating four languages like no other applicant and not being lost or afraid in his Gothic mansion. The plot thickens as we might expect and Pippa rises to the occasion. This was my first book by Eva Devon. I look forward to the rest of the series.

A book that starts with the heroine masticating toast does not encourage any reader to read on.
Other than that I quite enjoyed Pippa and Marcia and their story. Restricted by the length of the book, the plot is a little under developed and rushed, but well written enough to keep the reader engaged.
The book starts with four young ladies, fed up with the ton, running away to new lives, and promising to keep their friends up to date with their new lives. Pippa, bored and frustrated with her parents, and fascinated with history, is off to become assistant to a renowned Egyptologist.

talk, talk, talk

Having recently tried to watch the meandering plot of Moonknight, I had hoped that the constant and repetitive commentary regarding Egypt might infer that there was some kind of adventurous component of the plot. I was wrong. The author slow-walks the fmc through thrill-a-minute adventures like a carriage ride to the country, walking a driveway in the rain, locating the kitchen, learning to slice bread, grinding coffee beans, drinking coffee, and going on a long walk.

To Egypt or Bust

Lady Pippa is a devoted Bluestocking. The ad for an assistant to the Earl of Roxley to catalogue his Egyptian collection is just what she's looking for. Gruff and impatient, Roxley gives her a chance. To his surprise he finds she's not only efficient, but he's attracted to her as well. But the deceitful Lord Westmore wants what Roxley has. Very entertaining, without no angst, but has a very despicable villain.

Great beginning to the a new series

I enjoyed this book, though could have been a bit longer to explain a few more things. I loved the characters and the story line brooding earl wrapped up in his career of studying antiquities and Pippa who longed for that life. We see how their relationships develop and love that grows. A bit of angst and issues that stand in their way to happiness due to an old rivalry. Enjoy...

Not my cup of tea

Admittedly I only got through 36% but this book was so sweet and simple, it made my teeth hurt.

I found no chemistry between the two main characters. And up to 36%, they were almost the only characters.

There were not even any servants. Who washed her muddied dress? Not her. She didn’t even know how to slice bread. Who took care of the horses?

No, not believable at all.

It had such great promise. We have an educated and knowledgeable heroine who's decided to take charge of her life and takes up a post as the Hero's assistant and help him.with his archaeological collection. All well, till she decided to confron the villain along with the hero. Why would she do that? She's gone there on a false pretext. We don't even know why the villain hates our hero so. This is an extremely immature book.

This read like a cheap dime novel (I did get it for free).
The MC wants to be an independent woman. She goes to work for an Earl as his assistant cataloguing his Egyptian artifacts.

They quickly jump into bed (which will make you scratch your head wondering why). The language isn’t great, things don’t make sense for the time period, there are grammar errors all over the place… I’m giving it one star for those reasons.

A Great start to the first in The Wallflower Wins series and it does not disappoint. The Way the Wallflower Wed grabs you right from the start. Eva Devon has written a romance with unforgettable characters that are well thought out and each and everyone comes across clearly as their individual personalities become more than just part of the tale, with a villain who is a threat to Pippa and Marcus and with one enjoyable plot that leaves you eagerly anticipating the next in the series.

Pippa

Pippa impresses from the start. How could Marcus do anything other than give a young lady a chance as his research assistant? She knows so much about everything except passion.
These two click from the beginning and find in each other an exciting adventure which will pull you in from the start.

Ok - Liked it

The heroine has modern unrealistic views for the period. Thus, if you like a bit more realism in your historical romances this is probably not the one for you. This one was borderline for me - not enough to make me eager to read more by the author, but not enough to make me unwilling to give the author another chance.
