Roland Cavendish was having the worst year ever. First his grandfather died. Then his father was killed. Then Uncle Laurence tried to kill him too. When it didn’t seem it could get worse, his cousin Nicholas kidnapped him to give to a jarl as some kind of exotic pet.
“You could break me, Tristram,” he muttered above Tristram’s swollen lips. Tris smiled.
“I know.” He lifted his strong legs and wrapped them around Bet’s waist to pull him in. “But I won’t.”
“You are not my hands, and you are not my shadow,” Roland whispered, staring up at him with wide, ardent blue eyes. “You are my family. And I cannot use you for this.”
“I love you,” Bet whispered. His fingers flexed to grip Tristram tight.
His lord turned toward him, his eyes shining, but only half as bright as his smile. “I love you too.”
