The Anthros do: a twisted place where cybernetics come to gawk at humans imprisoned behind glass. The machines have taken over the world above ground, and they intend to exterminate or imprison what’s left of the human race. Eden’s job as a runner is simple: survive long enough to bring back much needed supplies to the other humans hiding in tunnels beneath the city.
But after a botched supply run lands her under the glass domes as a zoo exhibit, her mission changes. Now, she has to learn to save herself instead of everyone else. A prisoner and lab rat, Eden is subjected to nightmarish and excruciating experiments at the hands of the machines. Their end goal is clear: turn her into one of them. Escaping seems impossible, unless she places her trust in the hands of her exhibit mate, a strange boy who was born within the zoo. If the machines succeed, though, Eden will be forced to hunt down other humans—even her own family.
She’s used to running and hiding from her problems, but when the decision is made to face them head on, Eden learns that pride and confidence aren’t always good attributes to have. Trusting others may be her hamartia, and the price she pays for her freedom will be life-altering.
This is the book 1 of the Idyllic series. This is an amazing sci-fi book that I have read this year. It covers the most intriguing topic of machines or more precisely Robots taking over humans.
The storyline is very thrilling that it keeps you captivated till the end and you can't stop flipping the pages. The machines want to eradicate every last human left and they torture the protagonist Eden to turn her into one of them. Eden's only job is to survive and save other humans.
The thought of Robots taking control of humans on itself is scary. The story is fully action-packed and filled with thrill and its a roller coaster ride of emotions. The author has narrated the story very beautifully and it has so many twists and turns that I couldn't keep the book down even for a minute.
I loved this book and I recommend it to everyone. I can't wait to read the next book.
Once I started, I couldn't put the book down, excited to get to the next chapter.
Humans vs. Machines (many who look almost human), with humans seemingly losing the battle - at times terrifying, at times inspiring. Amy Johnson pulls you into this dystopian world run by machines who strive to be as human as possible in their looks, movements, etc...everything that makes us human, minus human emotion. The machines conduct ruthless and violent tests on the humans they capture, all in an effort to advance their kind, and it is truly terrifying. The author writes in a way that is detailed and immersive while keeping an excellent pace and driving the novel forward at every turn. I found myself cheering for the Luddites (a group of humans), especially the M/C & heroin of the novel, Eden, and hoping that she could save her people. Each time that Eden was at risk, I felt saddened and heartbroken, but then she'd make a comeback and I'd be cheering for her success and for those around her. This book reminded me of a movie because it's so well-written that it was like watching it unfold on a screen, and it reminded me of stories like Terminator and The Hunger Games.
Terrifying and violent, while also inspiring and even uplifting, this is an outstanding novel and I'd give it 5.5 out of 5 if I could. This is one of the most enjoyable and memorable books I've read recently and I highly recommend. Can't wait to read the next book in the series and see what happens with the Idyllics!
More people need to read this book!!! It’s so freaking good!
Don’t even listen to the reviews that call it mainstream YA dystopia. It’s not - the characters are flawless (I was worried the MC was going to be insufferable like the one in Divergent but she ended up being extremely likeable) the world-building is next level and the brutality is extreme, as a dystopian novel should be!! Things are not peachy - it starts out like it’s going to be a kids book but it quickly turns into a very good page-turning survival thriller. Can’t wait to read book 2, although I would have been completely fine if there was no sequel. For once I’m happy with the ending.
I've always been against cybernetic augmentations and I've always talked about it in Deus Ex and Ghost in the Shell. Caged precisely explains that we'll become robots in the future if we do that and they'll take over. I'm glad that at least there is a fight against them. It's just like the Terminator series. Excellent book. The only thing that would make it better is if it were written in third person instead of first person. I personally prefer books like that. :-)
What I Did Like: +Eden is a fantastic character. Relatable and flawed, two of my favorite adjectives for a MC. She’s strong and smart but makes mistakes. In a book full of cybernetics, Eden is refreshingly imperfect. I loved her. +The concept is equal parts terrifying and brilliant. There are many points where you start to question the validity of something and then realize it’s exactly the same way we treat animals. In this book, humans are merely the animals. Absolutely brilliantly done. +The end definitely leads into the sequel well. You understand what’s at stake and want the journey to continue.
Who Should Read This One: -Scifi fans who want dystopian and dark cybernetic societies.
My Rating: 4 Stars A good intro to the world and a solid cast of characters!
This book was very different to my usual choice, but I was surprised to find that I really enjoyed it. Set in a dystopian future where machines have taken over and humans are forced into hiding, this book follows what the humans have to do to survive. The main character, Eden, is well thought out, and I look forward to see how her relationship with other characters develops in the next book. A great first book in the series.
The best kinds of books are the ones that, when you read them, you feel like you’re whisked off to another place, the world around you disappears and for a while you lose yourself in the stories of these other people. You become part of their adventures, their struggles and triumphs. Yet all the while these people feel like people you know, people you’ve met, or even people you’ve been or might want to be. This book has all of those glorious elements in it! Reading Caged felt like disappearing into a place that’s recognizable and yet so completely foreign, horrible in its brutality and yet strangely beautiful in its story.
This book is told in two POV but to be honest I was more interested in Eden’s story than in Linux. Don’t get me wrong, all the characters were well written but Eden seemed to have most of the storyline and the few chapters’ in Linux’s POV seemed like fillers. I think I would prefer to have seen a second book told in his character or perhaps equal time given to his side of the story.
Anyway, Eden is strong no doubt about it, but her strength overall is a growing process and that made me admire her as a character. And (spoiler) it took all of my willpowery not to throw my Kindle across the room when I realised she had been hoodwinked by someone she thought was, well maybe not a friend, but someone who was on her side.
I’ve already rambled on too much, but I have to mention how well the world was built too. Not just how much I felt immersed in it but the style of it. I’m always completely drawn in by the complexity it must take to come up with not just the original plot, but the stories of so many other moving pieces within the original narrative.
So after all of that, if you’ve read all the way to the bottom of this review (which if you have, thank you) I think you can surmise by now that I LOVED this book. The writing was so well done that every line and moment fit within the frame of what was happening. Stepping back I normally wouldn’t appreciate something that could be considered slightly violent, but within the world that Johnson has set up, it all works together to create a place that drew this reader in and kept me reading right to the very last page.
I can’t wait to start reading the next book in the series (what do you mean it’s not available yet?). If it’s anything like this one, I’m sure it’s going to be amazing!
Welcome to the world of Caged! Here you will meet Eden Cavalleri, the heroine of the story whose strengths are put to the test when she is caged within the walls of the Anthros. Maintaining her own freedom as well as the freedom of the Luddites, a small community of the remaining humans in Druxy, is her most important objective. But at what cost?
If you're looking for a sci-fi novel about a battle for freedom between evil cybernetics and a teenaged female rebel, then look no further! Caged is a book that is so good, you won't want to put it down! I know I didn't!
*POSSIBLE SPOILERS AHEAD* This novel is so eloquently written and one of my favorite things about it was the use of imagery throughout. It really transports you into the world the author has created. You will be taken on an adventure through the dystopian streets of Druxy and behind the gruesome scenes of the Anthros. The torture Eden endures is inhumane and reflective of animal cruelty. The characters are so well developed and each have their own unique personalities. You’ll get to experience Eden’s strength, Knox’s innocence, Linux’s genius mind, Cyrus’ protectiveness, and Emory’s wisdom. The relationships described between the Luddites will surely tug at your heartstrings. The love and care they have for one another rivals their intense desire to remain free from the machines. The author quotes the poetry of Sara Teasdale throughout and it is so beautifully intertwined within Eden's morals. Poetry is something that gives her hope, and it's something she clings to to stay sane in such a corrupt world. As you dig deeper into the novel, you'll discover just how the Anthros began and why the machines are taking over. Eden’s journey is grueling, but she’s not one to give up so easily.
Want to know more? I highly recommend giving this incredibly talented author's work a try! Trust me, you won't regret it! I loved taking this journey through the complex world of Caged and I’m sure you will too! I can’t wait to see where Eden’s journey goes in the next novel!

Caged By Amy Johnson Her first book, the beginning of a serie. And I loved the way it was written. Amy’s writing style makes it an easy yet breath gasping read. The emotions that build up and the remarkable details make you feel as if you are living this story. Will i be reading more of her ? Oh yes! I need to know what will happen to Eden and the handful of humans that are left. Will Knox stay on the other side or will he come back her ? What will happen now Null is gone ? Who will control them now ? There are so many questions yet to be answered So Amy, please hurry up with the next one ! 🥰 Mickey

If you're ready for a super suspenseful, heartbreaking, rollercoaster of emotions story, this is the book for you. The grim dystopian world, skillfully described by the author, will make you shudder. The evil ensuing is first degree, but the fantastic female protagonist, Eden, keeps your hopes alive that there may be a way out. That she is strong enough to endure and conquer everything that is thrown at her. This book is an absolute page turner and kept me on the edge of my seat throughout! I can't wait for the sequel. Highly recommended!!
This is an absolutely superb book! Very well written, the choice of language is well executed and the plot just flows effortlessly.
This is written in the first person as Eden, one of the last remaining humans co-exists underground in a world dominated by machines.
I was fully immersed in the story. Its powerful description and action scenes were compelling. This genre is one that I am really starting to enjoy and I will definitely look out for more books from Amy Johnson.
I am not normally drawn to many sci-if books, but the cover is excellent and totally interested me. I really enjoyed it and I thought the author did a great job, with her character Eden. It was very thrilling reading about how Eden was the saviour for many, but then to be imprisoned herself I thought was very clever. The author has really captured on how to describe a new world, I could see the streets of Druxy in my mind, and scared to my bones of Anthros. This could be a look into the future, on how machines could rule, so beware. I highly recommend this dystopian, sci-fi thriller.
Caged grabbed me from page one with excellent world building, characters and vividly painted action. It’s a real rollercoaster ride with the terrifying robots snapping at heroine Eden’s feet. The main protagonist is seventeen year old Eden, strong and selfless, living in the shadows of the harsh endless city built by the cybernetics. She and what is left of the human race struggle to survive and evade being ‘upgraded.’ If you’re a fan of divergent or the hunger games this book is easily on the same level. Caged is brilliantly crafted and won’t let you put it down - highly recommended 5 out of 5 stars!
Right from the beginning this book gripped me with its vivid descriptions and top class world building. The way the author is able to combine a great plot, superb character development and suspense is nothing more than an art form itself.each page would have me thirsty for more as turn after turn I fell deeper into its thrilling snare. A must read for those with a passion for dystopian futures, advancing technology and moral questionings. Well worth the read!
I thoroughly enjoyed this one! story revolves around Eden and a band humans living in the tunnels underneath the city. Why, you ask? Because machines rule the world now and are tirelessly hunting humanity to breed them for more spare parts. There's plenty action, drama, and thrilling intense scenes that will keep you turning the pages just to see how it plays out! I highly recommend this one!
I really enjoyed this despite the grusome torture scenes! An AI dystopian setting with desperate humans fighting for existence hooks you into Eden and her life. They will never win yet they keep fighting. Some good twists with the Idyllics and Knox. The ending leads brilliantly into the second book which I can't wait to read.
What an exciting read! I love books that start with action, and this one did not disappoint. It was absolutely gripping; the story is so fluid and well written bursting at the seams with graphic action and violent scenes that catapult you into A. Johnson's futuristic world. The protagonist felt like a real person, even more so through her transition. This is definitely one for the big screen!
A great post apocalyptic novel that draws you in quickly, developing a really genuine sense of the main character, Eden's world. I loved the descriptive first person narrative, really clearly seeing the smog and dank filled world described. Then the terror of the main human characters took the reader to the next level, with some of the more inhuman modifications holding the tension of the reader on a knife edge. Descriptions of bodies modified, in particular to be able to see internal organs working through clear plastic upgrades, grimly forces the reader to imagine what Eden sees and fears happening to herself. A great read, from a great author.
I was utterly compelled by the dark dystopia where machines rule and humans must hide and fight. There are so many levels to this story, so many questions about the nature of humanity and the value of freedom, explored through a thrilling plot. This is a brilliant escape, a great albeit scary world to immerse yourself in. Highly recommended.
Wow! An unbelievably magnificent read by this writer! Capturing a dystopian world equal to that of the hunger games and divergent! The plot grips you from the first page until the last one, with twists that take you on a journey through this new imaginative world. I would highly recommend this to who and everyone!
Caged is an action-packed story, teeming with love, emotion, and heartbreak. The main protagonist is seventeen year old Eden, following in her parents footsteps, to save the human race from the cybernetics. As we follow Eden through her strong and selfless acts, Amy Johnson creates vividly painted characters, settings, action, and scenes of torture … each highly realistic.
The storyline is dauntingly believable and brilliantly crafted. Read in a book club and highly recommended!
The story is fast-paced. The plot is outstanding. A kind of book that you can't get enough of. The characters are brilliant. Eden is very likeable warrior. I hope to see this come alive in a movie play. As this reminds me of Alita, the battle angel movie I admired.
Just when I thought I’d read my favourite book of 2020, this one comes along and spoils my list. This, without doubt is the best book I’ve read this year, whether that is from the most well known best selling author or from an independently published book like this. The imagery throughout is excellent. I’m biased as I love dystopian novels and particularly those that cover the potentially possible future of machines taking over us. I was worried going into the book after reading the blurb that I’d be within a maze runner rip off but oh no, this is original and different and equally as good. I think there’s a real chance of this becoming a movie too. It deserves to. Authors like this just need to be shouted about (I don’t know the author by the way - my admiration of the novel is 100% genuine). Yes, it’s a female hero so fully meets the inspirational factor for young women but anyone will love this: male, female, young, old, human....machine. Oh, and one more thing....absolutely genius to use the words (so cleverly) of a famous poet within this work. Caged is a house of shining words. One feels Teasdale would be in a leafy tree, honoured and very pleased. Knowing a little about her poems and life, one also feels there’s a reflection between Teasdale and the heroine of the story Eden. Like the rain of yesterday, I will most definitely not forget this book. I’ve said too much but I love it.
This book reminded me of the movie Alita: Battle Angel, which had a protagonist teen girl. What makes it different is the girl in this movie is much more complex and she has a definitive mission that she has to fulfill, which made the book very engaging. I'm glad the book has the potential to become a series. Can't wait for the next installment.
A fantasy delight from a talented storyteller. Intriguing characters with an absorbing narrative. Unique in it's style. Action packed chillingly believable future. An edge of your seat teenage book but could appeal to all as an escapism magical world. Could be a movie blockbuster.
It was such a good book. A long one that it took me a few days to read! Absolutely fell in love with the cover that I was wanting to read it even more. It is totally worth the time! I have been getting into read sci-fi books recently, and this one is a doozy! Adventure at every turn, and I like that a lot! I love stories on what can happen in the future....But I am not going to go into deep detail because I do not want to spoil! Cannot wait to read more work from this author!
Beautifully written dystopian story with a frightening premise. Is this a future we should be expecting? I'm already suspicious of my Amazon Echo. Looking forward to reading book 2.
This book is all that the blurb promises and beyond. The plot is cleverly built, and it threw me on different paths of suppositions - a real page-turner. I was hooked from the first pages and couldn't put it down. The writing style is flawless; it envelops the reader and brings the action into the foreground.
The main character, Eden, is a strong female teenager in charge of supply runs for the Luddites - the humans who escaped the machines - hidden underground. She is brave and smart. She is also falling in love like any other teenager. I loved the flashbacks and inner thoughts so beautifully executed. The use of poetry weaved into the story is brilliant. Some of the names have deep meaning, and they bring flashbacks from the history of humans.
Eden's best friend, Linux - speaking of great name choices - is a computer wizard. He is featured in some of the chapters, and I love his geeky and protective nature.
I am running out of superlatives for this book; I can't praise it high enough. For me, it sits right next to The Host and Hunger Games. I can't wait for the next book in the series.
I have read this book on kindle unlimited as part of a book club.
This story sent chills down my spine but I still couldn't stop reading.
It grabs you from page one and Eden and Linux are the perfect characters. They are real, raw, they make mistakes and pay a price which is very high.
The world building by this author is excellent. Perfect I would say. Eden' earth is cruel, polluted, and human are extinct and hunted for harvesting and breeding.
Eden is doing what she can to survive and help her race but when she is caged and chosen by the machines to forcefully turn into a Idyllic. Will she yield? Help to hunt her own people? Or what price will she pay for her defiance? Find out by reading the book!
I have to say, Some parts of the story reminded of the cruelty we show against animals. We cage them. We use them as test subjects. We put the in zoos as exhibits. What if it was us instead of them? The novel gets very real and raw in these chapters and it keeps you on the edge.
