Daniel Carson lives in Nebraska with his wife and their perfect adoring children who have never ever misbehaved. Not once. Honest.
His days are a mixture of... teaching, cooking, driving, cleaning, more cooking, lots more driving, cleaning and more driving. So much driving. When the children finally go to bed, Daniel writes stories.
The Hope Walker Mysteries is a cozy mystery series with action, humor, and just a bit of romance. A Hopeless Murder is the first book in the series.
The Baking School Mysteries is a culinary cozy mystery series where the food is a delicious, the people are nosy but lovable, and murder is always on the menu. Fudge Frosting Murder is the first book in the series.
Just when you think everything has been resolved in the ongoing storyline of the series, a new one pops up that guarantees to be even more fascinating than the original. This series consistently has something new and fresh going on, which always keeps you guessing on what’s going to happen next! The usual banter and humor are here but Hope is out of town so there are new characters and situations to keep your interest. I need to know more about Hope’s mom!
I don't know how Daniel keeps this series fresh and fun and better and better but he manages to do just that. The characters are funny and quirky but realistic with layers, depth, and simplicity and complexity at the same time. It's interesting to see Hope's character grow, dealing with her past and gaining the courage to move forward. The mystery is the icing on the cake. Thanks, Daniel, for pouring your heart into the Hope Walker series. I begin reading the newest installment as soon as it is released. I laugh out loud in these books and who doesn't need that these days!
An excellent read full of laughs, lovable characters and storytelling at its best. I can't get enough of this series! Daniel Carson is one seriously talented author.
So far I have read 6 of these fantastic books They make me smile they make me wonder and guess who is the bad guy In this one we met the beautiful Delaney and the handsome Jamal But Sheriff Alex is still the owner of Hope’s heart
At the end of the last book, Hope solved not only the murders but also the case she'd been working on for years, the one that got her fired. She finally put an end to Tommy Mendoza and his hit person as well. She's not unscathed though and is still healing as this book opens. There is also something she never expected a note from her mother.
She shouldn't be out skiing, but it's with Alex and it was her suggestion. She's still not sure where their relationship is heading but maybe they'll figure it out. This excursion doesn't last long with her in pain, and we learn she can't take a compliment and oh boy, poor Alex. Before anything else can happen, Alex gets called by the postman, who is reporting piled up mail and a smell.
It's at this scene of what appears to be a natural death, that Hope finds a photograph of the Appleton Treasure Hunters Club. In that photo is the deceased and her mother along with others. Now Hope has a lead to follow in her search for her mother.
Katie and her husband are in Omaha, Nebraska for the Great Midwestern Craft Beer Gala and since Appleton isn't that far away Hope decides to take Katie with her.
They start at the Appleton Falls Reporter, the local newspaper office where the owner and editor, Rita Helms, takes them to meet the sheriff. Sheriff Maggie Duckworth confirms what Rita said about Harry Theisen being Harmon Muldoon but can't help more than that until after the Shakesbeer event that evening. At that event Hope is hit on by Joe Burgess, the local annoying, charming idiot and they discover the most delectable desserts.
The next day the sheriff tells Hope and Katie all she knows about the Treasure club, Harmon and her mother. Now as with any excursion with Hope you can expect to stumble across a dead body. This trip is no different. Just a different Sheriff, newspaper and town.
When things don't add up, Maggie and Hope look at the video surveillance tapes. It's Hope who makes several interesting discoveries all while pretending to do a story on the sheriff and gathering what facts she can about her mother.
Plenty of twists in this one, and fun seeing Hope as a minor celebrity.
I am truly enjoying these books; they are lots of fun and keep me guessing.
I really do enjoy reading about Hopeless and I typically hate when a story takes place outside of its normal small town, but I actually did enjoy reading about Appleton Falls and its characters. Everything turned out great for all the characters (except with Joe) and there was even a bit of a love story in there.
Hope continues in her search to find answers about her mother. She learns a few things about her in Appleton Falls, but still has many questions. I’m thinking this may be one of the main focuses in future books.
I just really want Alex to get a clue and take his head out of his butt and ask Hope out on a proper date and admit…finally…that he likes her. And she is just as guilty for not telling him she wants to give them a try.
Egad, the last sentence of this book brought my happy spirits right to the ground. Crashing to the ground. Ugh. There’s a new Mayor in town.
Stay tuned for the next book 7, A Hopeless Valentine
ADDED NOTE: I just read in the authors notes that there will be a spin-off new series involving the characters in the town of Appleton Falls. It won’t be released until May 9, 2022, unfortunately; however it is named “Fudge Frosting Murder (Baking School Mystery Book 1)”.
A Hopeless Journey came out a few months later than anticipated but, it was well worth the wait. Departing Hopeless, Idaho, Hope Walker spends the majority of this book in Appleton Falls, Nebraska, originally to follow a lead regarding her (estranged!) mother but (of course) gets herself involved in a murder investigation. Even though I did miss the regular Hopeless residents, the members of the Appleton Falls community were every bit as entertaining and I do hope that we cross paths with them again in future books. Daniel Carson is an amazing author and has given us some great characters, especially Hope and of course, her laugh a minute best friend, Katie. I had to put the book down for a while to get my laughing under control during one of Katie's conversations. I also have a soft spot for Alex, so fingers crossed there. I can’t wait for the next book in this serious and highly recommend them to anybody who likes a good cozy murder mystery - with more than a few laughs.
This was a disappointment. Thoroughly enjoyable but not nearly up to the rest of the series. I had been looking forward to it so much that I was checking Amazon a few times a week. When it came, I missed so many of the other characters. Hope leaves Hopeless on a quest to find her mother. All new - and frankly - good characters are introduced in the Nebraska town of Appleton Falls. But there is none of the tension of the prior books. The humor is there in the dialogue, but not the situations as in the prior books. Hope doesn't have her normal screw-ups and is just too darn, well, competent.
Perhaps the best way to describe it is that it was too cozy. The others were cozy mysteries but with a bit of bite. This had none. That being said, I am looking forward very much to what Mr. Carson calls "Hope Walker's Second Season". I could see his need for new characters, but I think some depth was left behind when Hope left Hopeless.
The series continues in a that solid way when you trust an author to do it. A good ninety minutes of character work, solid twists and what I think is becoming quite regular, hiding the main suspect in plain sight without a motive for a long time (once motive becomes clear they pop into contention about ten pages before our heroine works it out - perfect for the the reader is clever sensation). Also its interesting that this feels like what would be a backdoor pilot if it was a TV show, Hope is in a different town and it reminded me of how well Carson introduced the original set of characters so quickly. Though - as becomes quite clear with the sheriff here - he does has a bunch of stock character types he likes to return to (brassy tough old broads being a favourite). Nice to return to Hope though.
I finally got back around to reading this series again. Hope is following the trail of her mom and this leads her to Appleton Falls after finding a picture of her mother in the home of a dead man. Hope is asked by the sheriff in that town to help investigate the death of another man while trying to get townsfolks to open up about her mom. The murder here is more like a locked room murder mystery, surveillance tape shows the last person to enter hours before was a police officer who helped the victim home, but did he do it and how could he in that short period of time? There are plenty of twists and turns and suspects, as the victim was not a very nice person, for Hope to investigate. There's also some romance, which ehh because can Hope and Andy get their stuff together already???
Love this series! And book 6 did not disappoint. Hope is a character you can't help but love. I enjoyed her road trip and the new characters and change of scenery. Hope they may make an appearance at a later time because sounds like there could still be a mystery around the man that took her out of town to begin with (don't want to say a name and give it away). Already looking forward to the next book.
3.5 Stars. Read the first 6 books back to back. Hope Walker is an investigative reporter with an explosive story about a criminal organization. Her story is squashed and she's fired as she returns to her Idaho home town. She's soon involved in solving murders and ongoing mysteries while trying to rebuild her life from some tragic events. Very fun characters, light romance and ongoing plot developments as the series goes on. Nice escapist reading.
Unlike some cosies I have read, Carson really takes the time to make his stories feel well fleshed out, not just slapped onto paper and off to be published. Love the characters, great descriptions is settings, and fun, bizarrely odd murder mysteries. I have one question about this one, though. What did Hope drive back to the airport? She had been driving the Batmobile around town, a loaner.....
How I just love this series, it’s a favorite of mine. Hope ends up traveling to Nebraska to hunt down a lead on her mother and makes some new friends and even solves a murder, while there. It’s always hilarious, always fun and the mystery is always excellent. I’m hoping that her and a certain sheriff will finally get it together.
Hope is a great character and shes bound to have adventures no matter where she goes. I missed the town I'd grown to love in the first few books and found it hard to get excited about so many new characters. Hoping it revs back up at home with then next book.
She's not perfect, but Hope Walker is irresistible. Carson has really capture the recipe for making great characters and plots. Delightful witty dialogue is peppered through out, there are no lags in the plot along the way to a great conclusion that I didn't see coming. I hope you enjoy, I know I have enjoyed every book so far.
Hope while recovering from the epic fight with Ms Jones is called to help sheriff Alex with a dead body. While there she found a picture of her mother in Appleton Falls Nebraska so since Katie was in Omaha with her husband for a beer fest she went to look at Appleton Falls. While discovering the best coffee shop and the best bakery shops, she gets involved in a murder investigation. Great reading
In "A Hopeless Journey," Hope Walker hits the road to travel to Appleton Falls, Nebraska after discovering a photograph of the birth mother who abandoned her and her father decades before. Once there, Hope forms some friendships, finds a little romance, a dead body, and unravels another cozy mystery.
I thought the last book was the best book in the series but I've been proven wrong. This is just as good and maybe even better in the storytelling pace. We get to meet a whole new cast of wonderful characters that I really grew to love. I highly recommend this book. It's a good one!
There are very few books that make me laugh out loud but I have with each book. The mysteries are fun but the humor puts it over the top. I recommend them for someone who is looking a good lighthearted who dunn it!
Good characters….didn’t see the plot twist coming. Book six is coming up and the romance with the sheriff is a little past due. Love the characters but something needs to give in the romance department!
Interesting New characters for Hope to interact with, and in a new environment, as she searches for more information about her family, continues her investigations and learns more about herself along the way.
