On the ice, your secrets will kill you quicker than the cold...
Libby Scarpa is a witch with a special gift—she knows people’s secrets.
This has made her valuable in the black markets that thrive in the ring towns that dot the ice. But she’s tired of digging through the minds of smugglers. She’s made plans to sneak past the ringwall and make her way to another ring. To a new life.
But when an old friend finds a book that could rekindle war with the undying, he begs for help, and Scarpa decides to make one last delivery.
To save rings that have never sheltered her and people who have only feared her—and to keep a promise to a friend—Scarpa must cross over ghost-haunted ice, hide from an army of flying warriors, and rely on people she doesn’t know or trust. If she can learn to use her power instead of hide from it, she might be able to deliver the book to someone powerful enough to prevent a war and save the rings.
KB Lawrence has worked as an engineer, a patent agent, a preschool teacher, and a programmer, writing novels and short stories all along the way. When she's not sitting at the computer, she's chasing her husband, kids, and dogs around a tiny farm in Massachusetts. In fact, right at this moment, there is a baby lamb sleeping in a clothes hamper in her office.
KB grew up in the Northern California rain, spent some time in the Texas sun, then headed up to the Minnesota snow (Icegrind was first imagined during a particularly frigid January). This was good preparation for living in Massachusetts, where all of this weather exists in abundance.
Weird, well-written, and includes great world-building
Scarpa is a witch who can see a person's most deeply held secrets. Not only can she see those shameful, horrible secrets, she can use them against a person, twisting them inside the head until only a drooling mess remains. She is one of only a few of the Blessed left in the world after a terrible war fought among the winged undying, the plain folk, and the Blessed. Now the undying may bring war again.
This story is very different from everything else I have read recently. It is intelligently written, with interesting characters, and a great plot. This is one of the few series I will devour with great pleasure.
