Sweet and sassy Little Miss Clean was his undoing and his angel
Stealing Summer is a delightfully entertaining book. it is the story of Summer and Slate Williams and a beach house.
Slate is thirty-five years old and has been a professional football player the the Blue Devils or Tomcats (not sure as this is a detail inconsistency) for the last thirteen years. He has had a great career as a quarterback so far having won three championship rings. But he has blown his arm out and is working towards getting back as he had planned on playing for another decade or so, and getting some more rings. His coach has told him to take some time off and his agent told him to go away. So he has rented a secluded beach front home with a private beach and no one around for a couple of weeks. That is until early one morning about a week in he rounds the deck after taking an outside shower to find a woman cleaning. When she spins around to face him she catches her toe and literally falls into his arms, a good metaphor for the future it seems. It turns out to be a cleaner with the property rental company. He many not want her there but she has a job to do and needs to do it.
Summer is twenty-eight years old and has gone through more than a few traumas in her life. He mother died when she was five years old so she was raised by her father who gave her his love of football, living for Friday Night Lights and Sundays together. But after a lifetime of working construction his body was in a lot of pain and he ended up getting addicted to pain meds. When his doctor retired and his new doctor would not prescribe him any more he turned to heroine and died when she was twenty-two. She survived just barely keeping her head above water for a few years until she met Bobby. He wooed her, taking care of her and making her feel safe, happy and loved. They married six months later but then he changed and became physically abusive. A year later he was drunk on the family yacht and decided to take a swim, drowning. His rich parents blamed her so she left and moved to the beach to heal. Since then she got a job as a house cleaner and is taking classes at the college. When she sees Slate she knows right away who he is but yet does not fawn all over him, even though she trips and lands in his arms, more than once that day.
Slate and Summer are both loners but for different reasons. However as the weeks pass they interact more and it turns out that they are able to heal each other. When they come together it is physical, explosive and hot as heck! But it is also sensual and loving while Slate shows Summer that he can take care of her.
I really loved this story as it was a wonderful journey for both Slate and Summer to their very funny and charming HEA. But I did find that the number of inconsistencies in the story was annoying. Otherwise it is a well written book with a couple loveable characters in Slate and Summer.
