A Father’s Gift
⭐️⭐️⭐️💫
*thank you to the author for a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review*

Blake is a nurse practitioner and deals with rude patients and an administration that doesn’t care about its workers, and while she struggles with her job she also begins to struggle in her personal life. Blake then cares for her father and as their relationship strengthens, she as a character changes.

Blake was very interesting and very well developed. Watching her change was heartbreaking yet positive and uplifting. Her father was also very well developed and probably my favorite character.

There were a few slow spots in the book, but the end made it worth it and it was a good build up. There were definitely some twists I didn’t see coming, but there were a few predictable aspects.

Overall this was a pretty good book. Not my typical read, but still enjoyable.

A Father’s Gift by Sherrika Evans. Thank you to the author for a signed copy in exchange for an honest review ⭐️⭐️⭐️

Blake has the perfect career and life for herself. She is proud of her job as a ER nurse practitioner and her home she owns. However when her father’s cancer diagnosis comes back, she starts to question how happy she really is in her career and lifestyle.

This was a nice story about a woman finding herself while dealing with trauma and grief. I really enjoyed the main character and her internal quest. It was a sentimental read that answers questions about missed opportunities, work/life balance, and the daily events that make up a worthy life. I fid find it a bit slow at times but it was because it is building up Blake and her father’s relationship. I think it’s difficult to write a book that is both heartbreaking and uplifting, but Ms. Evans has done it.

Get out the kleenex!!!!
In the first part of this novel we learn about Blake’s growing dissatisfaction and disillusionment with her job as a nurse practitioner (angry and rude patients, administration that doesn’t seem to care about its workers) and with her personal life (failed dates, feeling at loose ends), all struggles that are totally relatable. I feel like Evans really hits her writing stride in the second part where Blake cares for her father during his cancer surgery. Their relationship grows and deepens throughout the story and you can see how Blake gradually opens up and begins to see joy in all aspects of life, to really experience life just like her father does and wants her to do. I loved the character of her father! He was funny and sweet and very well written; he reminded me of so many dads I’ve known. The addition of Chris as a romantic interest for Blake together with his daughter (also recovering from cancer) added a sweet, touching plot to this story and really helped you to see the changes developing in Blake.

So this is not my typical genre, therefore this is not my favorite book. There were a few typos and missing letters throughout, but overall looked pretty good.
This book is about a heartwarming relationship between a father and daughter in the face of an unexpected diagnosis. I enjoyed the relationship aspect, with the closeness and the banter between the characters. Working in the healthcare field, I honestly felt I could relate to Blake, the main character in this book. There were times where I did get frustrated with the slowness but then it sped up a bit. I have to say that I guessed about the romantic interest, but there were definitely some twists that I didn’t see coming. Overall, I think it was a well written book.

Loved. Absolutely refreshing to read something that isn’t similar to everything else you’ve read. The story tugs at your heartstrings and most of us can totally relate.

First I would like to thank Sherrika Evans for allowing me the pleasure of reading her debut book. And apologize greatly for not getting it done sooner. I regret that I didn’t start this book earlier. It was such a pleasant read and a very easy read. It flowed so easy and I fell in love with every character. It made me feel like Mrs Evans had a close connection with the characters and storyline as if she had written this story from some experience she may have encountered.
Blake takes her career serious, maybe a little too serious at times. She can’t remember the last time she actually went out and had fun. With men flirting and trying to get some time with her, she just pushes them aside and buries herself in her career. Even her coworkers have noticed to the point to where they know she can be taken advantage of. She can’t say NO to an extra shift that needs covered. And promises of time off never come. A person can only take so much and when Blake’s dad finds out he has cancer she has had all she can take.
Her dad is her too priority now. Blake knows she has to make changes as she sees how she has neglected her relationship with her father. She takes advantage of this time with her dad and doesn’t leave his side as they head to Duke for surgery.
While there she meet a man and his daughter. His daughter is also a patient at the hospital and they all make an immediate connection.
Blake is enjoying her time with her dad and her time with Chris and April. She know she is going to have to make a decision on where her path will go next.
What will she decide and how will things evolve with her dad, with Chris and with April?
I loved this book and give it 4 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️s

“Do whatever makes you happy.”

When Sherrika Evans reached out and offered me a copy of her debut novel, A Father’s Gift, two things captured my eye right away. First this cover. It is beautiful and given my lack of vacations this year, I wanted to be wherever this was. Secondly, the description. A novel about a nurse practitioner whose life is turned upside down when her dad is diagnosed with cancer. Being a nurse myself I always love when the main character is in the medical field.

Everything surrounding the hospital work environment, stress that comes with nursing and the way nurses (or NPs in the book) are treated by patients (both good and bad) resonated so much with me. When I worked in the hospital, I always felt like I could be doing everything right but the hospital was working against me. I found myself questioning all the time and energy I was giving to a place and occupation that doesn’t seem to always notice. Burnout especially in the nursing, is real, and I knew Sherrika had to have been a nurse herself to be able to write those parts of this novel so authentically. I found myself nodding along to so many situations.

Overall I really enjoyed reading this novel. It was a quick read and I found myself not wanting to stop until I knew how Blake’s story would end, even shedding a few tears along the way. Would she fall back in love with nursing, or jump into the unknown of something new? Either way, I was just cheering for her to be happy. I also loved the relationship she had with her father and how much it was strengthened even during a trying time. A Father’s Gift felt like a phone call with an old friend, just catching up on life.

Blake is living her best life, everything she ever wanted until one phone call changed her life. One word, cancer. One minute she is happy, an ER nurse practitioner, the next she is questioning everything. Her fathers cancer is back, the news flips her world upside down in a seconds notice.
"Do what makes you happy!"
.
When cancer ruins her life, she has no choice but to make changes...changes she never knew she needed until now. While the clouds are dark there is a ray of sunshine in the form of Chris. She meets Chris while her father is battling for his life, Chris has a challenge of his own. His sweet daughter April has been battling for her life, cancer strikes again. Will Blake find the silver lining? Her happy ending after all the pain a cancer diagnosis has given her?
.
This is a beautiful, heart warming story in the mist of one of the biggest heartaches of life ...death.

This was such a different book than I would normally read, but I am so glad I did. I absolutely loved this book. This book is about the bond between a father and daughter when faced with an unexpected diagnosis. There is also self discovery and romance sprinkled into the book. Be sure to grab your tissues, this is a real tearjerker. I loved the characters in this book and watching them grow as the book went on. The book has some slow parts to it, but overall it’s a very quick read. I ended up reading it in one day, I didn’t want to put it down. It was really such a great book, and I would recommend it!

Loved this book! It was a different style of book than we had been reading recently and it was a breath of fresh air. It was super relatable and it made you think about how things are in your own life and relationships. Definitely a book either of us would recommend for anyone to read :)
