Abigail’s second year at the Tarkana Academy has been an all-out disaster. She’s just unwittingly helped Vertulious, an ancient he-witch and powerful alchemist, destroy Odin’s Stone and restore his powers, and now all of Orkney is caught up in the threat of war as the witches prepare to destroy the helpless Orkadians. Determined to set things right, Abigail and Hugo set off for Jotunheim, the land of the giants, to find a weapon to restore the balance. All they have to do is track down the God of Thunder and convince Thor to turn his hammer over to them.
When their former-friend-now-foe Robert Barconian arrives with a band of dwarves, intent on stopping them, Abigail and friends must unite to prevent a war that will destroy them all. But has Abigail made the biggest mistake of all by trusting in the wrong ally?
"Dear Readers: I wrote the Legends of Orkney series for my twelve-year-old son who challenged me to write something he would enjoy reading. The Red Sun is filled with exciting characters who struggle to find their true path. Sam learns so much about his past and how to overcome his anger, but will he continue to use his power for good or will he be drawn to the dark side? I hope you enjoy reading the Legends of Orkney series as much as I enjoyed writing them for you. The picture book series are dedicated to my father, the original Coal Thief! Keep reading!" - Alane Adams
Alane Adams grew up in an old Quaker town called Whittier in Southern California. Adams attended Whittier High School and was active in every possible sport including basketball (proudly claiming the nickname Breakaway Adams!) and swimming and diving. For college, Alane attended the University of Southern California where she wanted to be an English major, but family convinced her to become an accountant to help run a family business. After spending the next few decades helping to build one of the largest recycling companies on the West Coast, Alane left the family business behind to pursue her writing career. Before launching into writing full-time, Alane began teaching full-time at a local university. Finally, the Legends of Orkney series was born when her then 12-year-old son challenged Alane to write a book he could read. She hasn't stopped writing since that day.
Alane's favorite books include any story involving folklore, fantasy and fairytales. When Alane is not writing or teaching, she is hanging out with her three boys, each who have grown up having adventures to rival those of her characters.
This is the third book in the Witches of Orkney series for middle grade readers. Abigail is in her 2nd year at the Tarkana Academy, a school for witchlings. She has inadvertently helped the ancient male witch Vertulious destroy Odin's Stone, which brought back Vertulious' powers. Now he is at Tarkana Academy. Meanwhile, the threat of war looms over the witches of Orkney. Abigail with the help of her friend Hugo, hope to make things right.
This is a cute, fun series that is good for someone looking for something like Harry Potter. I like that they have the added twist of Norse Mythology. Abigail is a likable heroine who doesn't necessarily fit in with her peers and is still trying to figure out her own place at Tarkana Academy. There are a number of illustrations throughout the story. And since these books aren't as long as Harry Potter books, they are a great pick for middle grade readers looking for some independent reading.

Review: This series is such a fun read! I love how the series progresses seamlessly from one book to another for back to back reading and I loved the continuing storylines. The book did well to keep the world building a priority and the character development a must. The plot is still just as interesting as it was in the first book.
The only issue I had was that the pacing was a bit fast paced. That suits me, but might confuse some younger readers.
Verdict: It’s well done and a great Halloween read for younger kids!
Another fabulous Witches of Orkney story. This time Abigail wants to right her wrongs from The Rubicus Prophecy, as well as stop the dooming war coming. With Odin’s stone nearly destroyed, Abigail needs to find another magical item just as strong to take down the he-witch, Vertulious. With the help from Hugo and Jasper, Abigail’s adventure takes her to Jotunheim in search of Thor and convince him to hand over his hammer.
However, Abigail isn’t sure that Thor will help and her coven continues to debate if she’s against them.
This novel teaches readers that enemies can help when least expected, that those that you hurt can learn to forgive you, and to be always cautious of those who you put your trust into (sometimes they can stab you in the back).
As with her previous books, Adams begins each of her stories with a prologue, providing an introduction to previous events, some of the Norse mythology the stories are based on and this time she introduced the reader to Iduna, the caretaker of the magical apples that give the god's their immortality. We also learned some of the backstory about Vertulious, his interest in alchemy and his connection to Rubicus. There's even a quick glimpse of Thor.
I must say Witch Wars is my favorite book of the series thus far. The characters are interesting and I really enjoy Hugo and Abigail's friendship. Hugo continues to be such a sweet boy. I love his determination in stopping the war between the witches and Orkadians. Hugo may be a scientist at heart and not so much of a fighter, but he still challenges the witches beliefs and really doesn't want either side to go into battle. Abigail meanwhile is also in a tough position, struggling over her loyalty to her coven versus feeling responsible for everything that has happened so far. Being blamed for Endera's mother's death, her part in Vertulious (Verty) regaining his powers, and not feeling strong enough to go up against him. There's even a part of her that feels like she isn't living up to the witches code. Shouldn't her witches heart be made of stone like all the rest of her coven?
But then Verty threatens to hurt Hugo to get what he wants and Abigail realizes that she doesn't want to be Verty's puppet, so she agrees to go to Jutunheim with Hugo. I really loved reading about their adventures in the land of giants and even their unexpected trip at sea meeting Queen Capricorn of the mermaids. And of course Thor was a delight. He isn't easily swayed when it comes to helping out the witches, their problem's don't concern him as they aren't problems for the god's. It's amusing that in order to win him over Abigail and Hugo had to find something he was willing to bargain for in order to borrow his hammer.
I really love the direction that the story seems to be taking. The importance that's placed on finding a balance of power between the witches and Orkadians and the emphasis on the choices that we make defining our character. Loyalty, revenge, forgiveness, and friendship were just a few of the topics intermingled into the plot. It's not always easy to decide to do the right thing and while Hugo and Abigail may have averted a war for the time being, there's definitely a new battle brewing ahead. I'm excited that there will be more books in the series and looking forward to reading the next one.
Abigail, known as the blue witch, and her best human friend Hugo, embark on a dangerous journey to the isle of the giants to find Thor and borrow his hammer. It is the only weapon strong enough to stop a dangerous war that is coming between the witches and the humans. But a lot of others wish to stop them or to get the hammer for themselves.
What a fun third book in this middle grade series! I loved it! I’m a huge fan of Norse mythology so this was wonderful and had Thor and Loki and other mythological creatures. I know it made me want a hoblet as a pet!
We meet so many wonderful characters! A few of my favorites were Rego, the dwarf, and Robert. And of course, I like Hugo. He’s such a great friend to Abigail. But, I absolutely adored Big Mama, the Omera. What a magnificent creature! I wouldn’t mind having one to fly around on!
And what a villain in Virtulious! He is tricky, smart and bides his time. It makes him dangerous but he’s not the most dangerous this time. I liked that! The ending really got me! What a cliffhanger! I can’t wait to see what comes next!
This middle grade novel is about friendship, keeping promises, leadership, kindness and self preservation. I would recommend it for anyone that is a fan of fantasy, witches, and Norse mythology! And I most definitely recommend it for young readers!
Thank you Netgalley and SparkPress for the Advanced Reader’s Copy!
Abigail, Hugo and Robert find themselves in the midst of a war between the two sides. While Verty aims to control all the witches. Stone of Odin is destroyed and now Thor's hammer can only level the balance between witches and the rest of the magical population. But would be easy to trick a God? Can they possibly end a war or be torn as friends to protect their families?
Witch Wars is the third book in the Witches of Orkney middle grade reader fantasy series by Alane Adams. Due out 13th Oct 2020, it's 208 pages (print version) and will be available in paperback and ebook formats. This is a fun fantasy series for middle grade readers. There are a lot of Norse mythology tie-ins, magical schools for readers pining for Hogwarts, lots of ineffectual (really dimwitted) adults running around trying to destroy the world (and each other in the process), and smart kids who have to keep saving the day. This is the third book in the series, and as such, it works better for having been read in the proper order. The author is adept enough at writing backstory into the narrative that it's not absolutely necessary, but I do recommend not trying to read this as a standalone.
I like Abigail who is loyal and brave and tries hard to do the right thing even when plans go terribly awry. This time she and her friend Hugo are trying to avert catastrophe by stopping a war before it can get started. The story is full of action and thunders to an exciting battleground climax. The whole is a short and entertaining read and a nice addition to the series. I'm looking forward to seeing what comes next for Abigail and co.
Four stars. There's no graphic violence, bad language, or adult content. This book (and the other books in the series) are full of magic, magical creatures, and themes of friendship, loyalty, bravery, and good over evil.
Disclosure: I received an ARC at no cost from the author/publisher for review purposes.
More magic, more adventures and more norse myths all I. The hands of little Abigail.
Once more we follow Abigail Tarkana's quest to save her wold from the wicked desires of dark witches (or he-witch in the case!).
As the third installment of the Witches of Orkney series, we follow the events of book two and a company Abigail and Hugo in their quest to regain a magical artifact that might persuade the Tarkana witches to stop their warfare endeavours against the Orkadians.
This search will lead them to meet up with gods (norse of course!), creatures (dwarfs, mermaids) and outwit the evil Vertulious!
With a high content of norse mythlogical references and characters (more so than in the previous books), this book brings along a trepidating adventure across some of the realms of Yggdrasil and lets the character interact with gods and monsters at the same level.
Extremely likable for a young audience that live fantasy, magic and hope to follow the magical world created by Alane Adams.
An ARC of the book was kindly provided by Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.
Witch Wars by Alane Adams is the third book in the Witches of Orkney series. I haven't read the first two books so going into this it was a little confusing but soon I started to get the hang of it and enjoyed quite a lot. There are still a few things I really want to know from the first two books so hopefully I get a chance to read them to get the complete timeline. I loved the main protagonist, Abigail because from what I know about her not only is friendship important but so is doing the right thing. We have other characters as well such as Hugo and Robert. Thor and Loki from Norse mythology were also involved (and yes all I could picture was the Avengers characters, I couldn't help it!) There are quite a lot of dull moments in the storyline for me that I wouldn't call unnecessary but I just wanted it to get on with the good stuff. But the overall story is enjoyable and we're left on a cliffhanger so I hope I get to enjoy it as much as I did this. As a middle grade book this is the perfect read for those who love fantasy and adventure. 🦄🦄🦄 Rated 8.5/10 Melina L.
Honestly, this is the first book in the series that I have read. Although I need a bit of background on the events that transpired to make sense of what is happening in the plot and between the characters, I find it easy to reconstruct and understand the events.
I like how Abigail is constantly trying to make up for the wrong things she caused and Hugo supporting her. The novel has a mix of Norse mythology references, creatures, and quests plus magic, friendship, and trust. The language, writing and construction fit the intended audience.
I am surely interested to get the series.
Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for providing me a timed electronic advance readers copy in exchange for an honest review.
So far this is my favorite book of the series. While Abigail, Hugo, Endera and others are still children, their emotional depth has grown as is really evident in this story. Abigail especially is struggling with the weight of what her decisions and actions have contributed to and suffers from a lot of personal guilt - while Hugo is steadfast in helping her and being her lifeline. Once again they go on an exciting adventure in order to set things right, which tests the bonds they have with each other and others. We see some familiar characters, but also some new ones along with way, as well as more figures from Norse Mythology which I thought was a nice touch. As with the other books in the series the book was fast paced and a fun read.
I am not going to be very specific in this review because it's the 3rd book in the series. If you haven't checked out The Blue Witch, you should totally go back and check it out. That being said, it's a fun series, and I love following the adventures of Abigail the blue witch. Her friends (and enemies) and the trouble they get in (and out of) are always so fun. This book brings back all of the friends- Starfire, Robert, Hugo, Endera, Safina, and more- for a sweet ride. Personally, battle/fighting scenes are not my favorite to read; it's the reason I rated this somewhat lower than the other books in the series (which got 4-5 stars). And I can't wait for the next book!! 🐍
We wanted to give it 10 stars, but only 5 were available. My 9 year old said "it's one of the best books I've ever read'. My 10 year old said 'its an amazing tale of adventure and working together'. We hope there is a 4th book on the Witches of Orkney series. Thank you Once Upon a Book Club for introducing us to another great author.
My son and I had a wonderful time reading this series together. I love the cover art. My son really enjoyed the adventures of Abby and you Hugo. Wonderful MG books!
Abigail is one of my all-time favorite characters. She tried so hard to do everything right, and it so often turns out so wrong! I can’t wait for her next journey!
Thank you @booksparks for a copy of Witch Wars by Alane Adams for review. Witch Wars is the third in the Witches of Orkney series and is available now.
This has been such a fun middle grade series. Abbey is a witch who doesn’t like how witches are perceived and wants to be included but also be nice and take care of others. They are very adventurous stories that can be read independently but also are great all together.
Abigail is her persistent and courageous self in this, the third installment, of the Orkney series. The story follows her and her friends as they attempt to prevent the impending war between the witches and Orkadians.
This series is just enchanting. It is a beautifully build fantasy adventure with all the elements of a great middle grade series. There is conflict, and friendship/ trust battles, there is magic and suspense, there are Norse GODS! oh and dragon-esq creatures. I really loved this book in the series. It introduced more of the mythical world the witches live in and it was wonderful.
Abigail is growing up to be a strong, determined, and brave young woman. She believes in herself and her values and is doing her very best to show the other witches that there is another way, they don't have to be so evil all the time. We get more Norse mythology than ever in this book in the series, and I really enjoy learning about Thor and the giants.
This book left me on the edge of my seat and I flew through it in one sitting. Really spectacular.
