Everyday Osho: 365 Meditations for the Here and Now

Rate this book
For more than thirty years, the insights of Osho have delighted and challenged spiritual seekers. Everyday Osho represents the essence of these insights an understanding that synthesizes a wide range of spiritual and philosophical traditions ~with the contributions of modern science and psychology. This inspirational volume offers readers daily choices br living fully in the here and now, challenging them to embrace a new way of being that integrates body, mind, and spirit.

The Osho teachings defy categorization, covering everything from the individual quest for meaning to the most urgent social and political issues facing society today. His hooks are not written but are transcribed from audio and video recordings of extemporaneous talks given in response to questions from visitors over a period of thirty-five years. Osho has been described by the Sunday Times in London as one of the "1,000 Makers of the 20th Century" and by the Sunday Mid-Day in India as one of the ten people--along with Gandhi, Nehru, and Buddha who have changed India's India.

About his own work Osho has said that he is helping to create the conditions for the birth of a new kind of human being. He has often characterized this new human being as "Zorba the Buddha" capable of enjoying both the earthy pleasures of a Zorba the Greek and the silent serenity of a Gautama the Buddha. Running like a thread through all aspects of the work is a vision that encompasses both the timeless wisdom of the Last and the highest potential of Western science and technology.

Osho is also known for his revolutionary contribution to the science of inner transformation, with an approach to meditation that acknowledges the accelerated pace of contemporary life. His unique "active meditations" are designed to first release the accumulated stresses of body and mind, making it is easier to experience the thought-free and relaxed state of~ meditation.

Rajneesh (born Chandra Mohan Jain, 11 December 1931 – 19 January 1990) and latter rebranded as Osho was leader of the Rajneesh movement. During his lifetime he was viewed as a controversial new religious movement leader and mystic.

In the 1960s he traveled throughout India as a public speaker and was a vocal critic of socialism, Mahatma Gandhi, and Hindu religious orthodoxy.

Rajneesh emphasized the importance of meditation, mindfulness, love, celebration, courage, creativity and humor—qualities that he viewed as being suppressed by adherence to static belief systems, religious tradition and socialization.

In advocating a more open attitude to human sexuality he caused controversy in India during the late 1960s and became known as "the sex guru".

In 1970, Rajneesh spent time in Mumbai initiating followers known as "neo-sannyasins". During this period he expanded his spiritual teachings and commented extensively in discourses on the writings of religious traditions, mystics, and philosophers from around the world. In 1974 Rajneesh relocated to Pune, where an ashram was established and a variety of therapies, incorporating methods first developed by the Human Potential Movement, were offered to a growing Western following. By the late 1970s, the tension between the ruling Janata Party government of Morarji Desai and the movement led to a curbing of the ashram's development and a back taxes claim estimated at $5 million.

In 1981, the Rajneesh movement's efforts refocused on activities in the United States and Rajneesh relocated to a facility known as Rajneeshpuram in Wasco County, Oregon. Almost immediately the movement ran into conflict with county residents and the state government, and a succession of legal battles concerning the ashram's construction and continued development curtailed its success.

In 1985, in the wake of a series of serious crimes by his followers, including a mass food poisoning attack with Salmonella bacteria and an aborted assassination plot to murder U.S. Attorney Charles H. Turner, Rajneesh alleged that his personal secretary Ma Anand Sheela and her close supporters had been responsible. He was later deported from the United States in accordance with an Alford plea bargain.[

After his deportation, 21 countries denied him entry. He ultimately returned to India and a revived Pune ashram, where he died in 1990. Rajneesh's ashram, now known as OSHO International Meditation Resort and all associated intellectual property, is managed by the Zurich registered Osho International Foundation (formerly Rajneesh International Foundation). Rajneesh's teachings have had a notable impact on Western New Age thought, and their popularity has increased markedly since his death.

The overall theme of this book is to not get upset about what might happen. We don't know what might occur before it does. I've wasted a lot of time fretting about this or that, only to have things work out a lot better than I had imagined they would. So whenever I get that old anxiety, I start reading, and it really helps calm me down.

The meditations are great. It is nice to have a new one to ponder everyday. I read this whole book at once because I liked it so much, but it could be read slowly.

This is an interesting book. After a month of reading the daily entries, I decided to bit of reasearch on this somewhat alternative guru. I am guessing that the author is or was one of Osho's followers, and perhaps lived on his commune.

While there are occasional (maybe one per month) pieces of what feels like real wisdom amongst the writings, I found the daily readings to be more like "pronouncements" than "here's something to ponder" entries. Said another way, there are very few questions asked, and certain answers are often provided. And there is are many entries that seem a bit "off the wall" to me.

I think I just find the world a bit more gray, and a little less black and white, than Osho seems to. He even seemed dogmatic when it came to the idea of uncertainty.

ADDENDUM: I am near the end of Patient Zero by Lydia Kang, in which she outlines an actual biological warfare attack launched by Osho's commune in Wasco County, OR. They dumped salmonella into the dressing at local salad bars, causing >750 people to get sick and 45 hospitalizations. My advice: DON'T BUY THIS BOOK!

This is kind of a "daily devotional" book. There are 365 short, 2-page meditations.....insights from Osho.

Most are thought-provoking....some a little difficult to grasp, but I'm enjoying spending a few minutes each morning working my way slowly through the book.

Osho knows the way to heart. It is a beautiful book and after reading you feel like all moments can be a moment of meditation. It is like you can do your work and yet be in a great sense of stillness.

It's been a while since I visited my Osho book collection, which includes the original edition of this book. Everyday Osho is now being revived by St Martin's Press, and I'm so grateful to the NetGalley and St Martin's for an advanced copy of this book to review. Even though I've read it before, it was almost ten years ago, and at a time that I truly needed it. The time has come again that I believe I need these meditations in my life, and so I feel gratitude for being able to read them again.

Within the pages of Everyday Osho I believe are meditations that can resonate with just about anybody. There's 365 of them, which you might decide to read over the course of one year, cherishing one a day, or, like me, you may decide to scan through the contents and choose whatever speaks to you at that particular moment.

In the opening of the book, Osho states, "Meditation is very simple: it is nothing but consciousness. It is not chanting, it is not using a mantra or a rosary. These are hypnotic methods. They can give you a certain kind of rest—nothing is wrong with that rest. If one is just trying to relax, it is perfectly good. Any hypnotic method can be helpful, but if one wants to know the truth, then it is not enough. Meditation simply means transforming your unconsciousness into consciousness."

The meditations that resonated most with me were the ones about Gratitude, Self-Improvement, Authenticity, Low Energy, Darkness, Sleep, and Anxiety.

I felt like the self improvement meditation was written for me, it was that relatable. "Self-improvement is the way to hell. All efforts to make something out of yourself— something of an ideal—are going to create more and more madness. Ideals are the base of all madness, and all of humanity is neurotic because of too many ideals."

I find as a society we are constantly trying to improve ourselves, become better, do more, achieve bigger things, fit ourselves into the boxes that others build for us. This simple meditation was a reminder that we do not have to try to become somebody else, we can enjoy being whatever we are.

The Low Energy and Darkness meditations met me where I'm at right now in my journey. I feel in terms of my mental health, in the darkness, and with that, comes low energy. Osho's meditation says there's nothing wrong with low energy, just as there is nothing right about having high energy. When talking about darkness, Osho states quite beautifully, "Never be bothered by negatives . You burn a candle, and the darkness goes on its own. Don’t try to fight with the darkness. There is no way, because the darkness does not exist— how can you fight with it? Just light a candle and the darkness is gone. So forget about the darkness, forget about the fear. Forget about all those negative things that ordinarily haunt the human mind. Just burn a small candle of enthusiasm."

Finally, at the end of the book is a meditation called 'beginning', although it's the end of the book, Osho says, "wherever you are, it is always at the beginning. That's why life is so beautiful, so young, so fresh."

Each meditation is very short and concise, and can be brought anywhere with you, each one meeting you wherever you're at on your personal journey. I imagine this as the kind of book that can sit on a shelf for one thousand years, and still hold the same meaning and value that it does today.

Osho's teachings are so wise, and I think everyone can benefit from them. In this very special book, you will have your eyes opened to the power of self-love and the truths to living life more fully with much more insight and clarity.

A couple of my favorites:

"Never ask anybody what is right and what is wrong. Life is an experiment to find out.

Each individual has to be conscious, alert, watchful, and experiment with life and find out what is good for him. Whatever gives you peace, whatever makes you blissful, whatever gives you serenity, whatever brings you closer to existence and its immense harmony is good. And whatever creates conflict, misery, pain in you is wrong. Nobody else can decide it for you because every individual has his own world, his own sensitivity. We are unique. So formulas are not going to work. The whole world is a proof of this.

Mature people are those who have watched and found for themselves what is right, what is wrong, what is good, what is bad. And by finding it for themselves, they have a tremendous authority. The whole world may say something else, and it makes no difference to them. They have their own experience to go by, and that is enough."

"Success and failure are not the point, to enjoy whatever you are doing is the point"

Overall I enjoyed reading this book. There were several meditations that really stood out to me. My favorite one was “All the love in the world can be given to you, but if you decide to be miserable, you will remain miserable. And one can be happy, tremendously happy, for no reason at all - because happiness and misery are your decisions.”

There were several passages that I disagreed with though for example there was a chapter on history “History is so ugly. Man has not reached the level at which history should start. It has all been nightmares.” While I agree with Osho that starting each morning completely new without allowing the past to cloud our day I disagreed that history and the past should be completely forgotten.

I plan to purchase a copy of this book so that I can reread the book slower and really focus in on the passages.

Thank you Netgalley and St. Martin’s Press for the ARC in exchange for an honest review.

I was expecting something similar to "Daily Stoic", but this was so much worse, it's not even a fair comparison. While the latter has insightful, useful and coherent lessons, this book is just a collection of ramblings, some contradicting each other. Initially I skipped those pages, but eventually I started writing down "BS" on the side of the pages, to vent my frustration and to tell myself to skip this pages if I ever return to this book (which I doubt). There's a handful of interesting ideas here, but 5-6 ideas in 365 days isn't good enough.

A friend recommended me this book. As fate would have it, she's no longer my friend. I don't recommend it. Neither of them.

Nitpick 1: Each day should always fit one page but some spillover, which makes the book feel unbalanced and untidy.
Nitpick 2: The cover has printing glitches

Everyday Osho is a book of 365 meditations that can be read by topic, at random, or sequentially. Whichever way you choose to approach this book, you will no doubt find messages that resonate with you.

I have read several books of this type and while there isn't a lot that's new here, there are many lessons that we need to hear again and again until they become a part of us. Everyday Osho will help get you to that point.

My thanks to NetGalley and St. Martin's Essentials for allowing me to read an ARC of this edition which is scheduled for publication 8/24/21. All opinions expressed in this review are my own.

I found the cover of this collection of meditations to be quite appealing in its calmness. I felt invited in to see what the entries would state. There are 365 messages in all, one for each day of the year; the purpose of these meditations is to direct readers to be mindful in the here and now. If you are a person who likes to take a little time each day to ponder life’s mysteries, give this title a look. It definitely offers food for thought.

Many thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for this title. All opinions are my own.

I love Osho philosophy and having his great thoughts in a short once a day book is brilliant. I have been reading each day this past week and it has set a great tone for my day. Osho thoughts are thought provoking and opens your mind to another way of viewing the world and yourself. A must read in my opinion.

I loved this book, mostly because it was broken down into bite-size daily readings. I read them at the beginning of each day, which set the tone. Many times, the writings would synchronize with my reality which brought an opportunity to course correct or simply pay attention to certain details.
I recommend this book to others, easy to read, often inspiring. Thanks, Osho !

One of the very first books I loved. For years I read it over and over. Which I then gifted to a friend who was going far far away as a memory and as something to look into when times get hard.

Every time I read Osho's mind in this book, I would feel peaceful.

Whether you're an OSHO fan or not, this has some solid wisdom in it. He was very prolific, so It would be easy to create a few more of these. However, this does seem to include some of his primary messages. Good stuff.

Thanks very much for the review copy!!
