Dark #2

Dark Valley

Rate this book
The journey continues! Van has a fair amount of problems, mostly of her own making, but even more troubling is the discovery that orks are in league with the dark elves. Nothing good can come from their alliance. Sinister forces may be developing far beyond what she could ever imagine.

I had fun reading the continuation of this story...but I'll be honest in that I was hoping for some more physical progress for the characters (meaning like off the mountain to explore some more world building...but I might just be impatient to see how Van's family will react to her new beau)

I did also really enjoy the romantic progress we got with Ren and Van though!

description

I liked that they have started to trust and rely on each other more, and have come together to explore Van's new and seriously considerable powers. Plus we got a little more time with the demon Az ( Which I am still wondering where that is going in terms of relationship connections- considering he is feeling both parties in the couple.)

I didn't love this as much as the first one- but I will def look out for the next book!

A Favorite

I like how the author developers the characters and how the characters stay true top their personalities.
I've read a lot of books (I'm talking like 15 a month) and the relationship that is displayed in here is one of my all time favorites.

Excellent sequel. The second book has a tighter control of the plot, and there's legitimate character development. Van grows up and Ren opens up in turn, while shit gets real. Really want to see where the story goes for once- in a romance series, that's kind of rare!

The worldbuilding is comforting and familiar if you're fantasy fan. The dark elves are very D&D drow, and trolls feel like Warcraft trolls, but it's unique enough to feel like a good romp.

Round 2, fight!

Ren and Van made it to the surface after taking out Ren's sister and her gaurds. Oh, and her giant pet crab/spider/monster thing. But, somehow, with that surge of power, and all the voices in her head, well, that rock everyone was so worried about will never be lost. It's now embedded in her chest. It's also causing some weird side effects. Add in her fancy soul sucking charm burn scar, and the demon who's talking to her in her head and through dreams, and she's not sure if these things are going to help prevent this war they're trying to stop or make it near impossible to be able function. To top it all off, Van just wanted to show Ren the beauty of the topside world, and wouldn't you know, their first night out of the ground they come across the fairy equivalent of flesh eating locusts. Which leads to the discovery of enslaved trolls, an ork army, a dark elf mage with some fancy binding spells, and a host of other things they've got to undo before trying to rescue a city of unwitting humans. Fun!

Spoilers ahead.
This picked up right where 1 left off. The fun never ends. Az is still whispering and trying male deals. The stone has added some fun, new, please don't make me explode, challenges to life. The voices in her head are getting overwhelming. She's dreading trying to get humans to listen to her warnings, and fear over their reactions to Ren and Bone Arrow. And then the other issues a pop up. This was definitely action packed. It is still very much character driven. They're growing and evolving, but this immense and crazy world with amazing beings and, possibly, an array of cultures, is still a mystery. We get to learn a dark elf curse word, though. And some basic forest item names in troll. Most of the rest of what's said in other languages still remains a mystery, too. But the story itself is non stop. From the first page to the last, it's just event after event, with zingers heavily sprinkled in. The Az issue gets somewhat settled. Which should provide some interesting bits for the next book lol. The one thing that keeps poking at my brain, is the Bone Arrow issue. He's not accepted enough by the Deepearth trolls. He gets offered a spot, and chance to mate, with the mountain trolls, but instead decides to stay with Van and Ren. Van's feelings seem to be changing to more familial ones than she had previously, the author has stated this will not be a multiple partner relationship, which excludes him being more to get than he is. He's alone, clanless, seeking a place to fit in, but turns down the one he was offered. Maybe that will pay off for him in 3? I really like his acerbic self and want to see him find his place. The author has me hooked. I'm invested in these characters lol.
Also, the editing was a little better. Still some oopsies (example- starching instead of scratching), dropped or oddly interjected words, that were a little jarring, but the punctuation was clearer.

4 stars. I had to think about my rating for a minute because the second book just felt different from the first. The first was more comedic overall with a slower pace. Even though it was about survival the base was a more funny story with engaging banter. This second book, although still funny at times, wasn’t the same instead focussing more on the gravity of the situation they were in and working towards a saving the city(s) from the dark elves.

So I had to think about my rating. Coming to the conclusion that I liked book two in a different way as book one but equally so. Looking forward to book 3!

On a side note: I wouldn’t have minded if this was a RH. Good ones are so hard to come by and this would have been a good one! Also I have a thing for bone arrows green skin. No clue why...

In the beginning I wasn't really feeling this but when the action started I was pulled right back in. This was action packed. Things were constantly happening and there was never a dull moment. I like Van and Ren as the main characters but in this sequel Az the demon stole the show for me. He was my favourite character. He's mysterious, sexy and sassy while also being absolutely lethal. Bhet was another side character that was just adorable and his friendship with Van was so sweet. I also liked Bone Arrow and his relationship with Ren. Overall this was a satisfying sequel and I'll definitely read the third one hopefully soon.

AR Keo are you there? I need the next book!

I am continuing to love this series and it’s characters and world. Ren lives rent free in my head. Van was much more badass in this book. Az the demon was unexpected, but he is so hilarious and I am eager to know how he affects Ren, Van, AND Bone Arrow.

I see that there is a next book teased at the end of this one and I’m hopeful it comes out very soon. These books got me out of my COVID depression!

Enjoyable

I liked the story quite a bit and enjoyed the introduction of some new characters. Not as many typos and editing errors in the second book as there were in the first however it could use another round or two of editing to catch them all. Looking forward to the next installment. - Patty

I compared the first book to a Tolkien/Skyrim fanfic, which was fantastic, of course.
Unlike Skyrim, the side quests here were not that exciting. This was a bit more meandering than I thought it would be. Something here didn't click as well as the first book, but I definitely want to see what happens with the next book.

Another good one

This is a series I regret starting when there was only one book out. It is binge-worthy and frustrating to read with long intervals between each book release, but it is and incredible story. I honestly can't wait for more.

Awesome series. Can’t wait for the next book

Didn’t disappoint. The twists and turns where fun and unexpected. Can’t wait to see what they get into with Az and hoping Bone Arrow gets his due. Love his character.

I was really loving this...
But then the heroine became unnecessarily mean towards the demon when she's suppose to be this kind hearted character. She accepts everyone for who they are and what they did, but not the demon and he hasn't hurt anyone.
It just started to clash with me.

Big hearts

Van and REN big hearts get them sidetracked, but as always into the middle of chaos. A good saga to add to the first book.
