The Author relates stories of operational flying of the F-105 Thunderchief, F-111 Ardvaark, Hawker Hunter, Hawker Siddley Buccaneer and the A-10 Warthog in the period from 1968 through 1986. Combat tales of the Vietnam war in the F-105 and F-111 are included, as well as details of an exchange tour with the RAF.
Goebel flew and loved two of my favorite air craft, the Thud and the F-111. I have studied both aircraft intensively for decades, and yet I still learned a lot in this story. This book reads and feels exactly like you are sitting there in conversation with the author. He is self deprecating throughout and knows precisely how to tell a story. I still work in Thailand regularly and would love to mail him a couple of bottles of Mekong whiskey.
Gary Gobels career in the USAF and the RAF was a superb read. As a retired airline pilot I enjoyed the insight and technical aspects of the military aircraft he flew. There was a good balance of humour and real life experiences of Gary enjoying his job and life.
Got a little to technical but reminded me why I also so enjoyed my 20 years. Would have appreciated a little more acknowledgement of his enlisted troops. Spent 15 out of 20 in recruiting where the officer side was more willing to acknowledge the importance of the enlisted. Pilots can be very arrogant but they do have special skill that few others do.
Fast paced and very interesting! Goebel presents his career clearly and does not cloud his story with extraneous details of no particular interest to the reader. Great writing! Robert
A raw and authentic tale of a life in the air. Enjoyable if not a little quaint. The author is clearly a talented pilot with a great swag of stories from his career.
