One More Time: A Pride and Prejudice Variation

Rate this book
What’s a man to do when he finds himself committed to an engagement he can’t remember. For Mr. Darcy the answer is obvious: his duty, as always. A gentleman does not go back on his word. Fortunately, he is already half in love with the lady, but he cannot bear her deplorable connections. Falling in love again may be easy, but learning to tolerate her family could be the hardest thing he’s ever done.

Fitzwilliam Darcy falls off his horse and looses a year of his memory the day after proposing to his dearest Elizabeth. He tries to figure out what is going on. Can he yet again come to terms with Elizabeth's lack of fortune, her family's behavior and her low social standing?

I really enjoyed this book as all the other characters remember the last year and it makes a great backdrop as Darcy must make new to him discoveries.

Lost memories

Darcy suffers loss of memory for the last 11 months so has missed out of all the experiences that molded him into the Darcy Lizzy could love and everyone else enjoys being with.

SPOILERS AHEAD

So Darcy has to get used to all the Bennets again. No one knows he has lost his memories. He is arrogant, he is proud, he is rude. But Wickham is married to Lydia. Imagine the old Darcy trying to put up with that. He doesn’t remember himself saving Lydia’s and the Bennet’s reputations.

All the Bennets are hard to like. Mother Bennet and Lydia are the worse but Kitty, Mary and Mr. Bennet are just marginally ok. Watching him fall in love with Lizzy again while having to deal with her family and Bingley sisters was eye opening. Quite frankly he was a jerk but really the Bennets were buffoons.

It shows what a miracle it was for Lizzy and he to ever be a couple. Toward the end even Lizzy is told about loosing his memories and knows he will be unlikely to change back to his old 2.0 version of himself and releases him from their engagement.

So the HEA is achieved by at the last minute he is able to overlook everything. No one changes but him and Lizzy takes him back.

But it wasn’t a HEA I could buy into. Once again he has to remake himself to “earn” her love and it just felt wrong. I was sad for Darcy and I was sad for Lizzy. The HEA felt like so much hypocrisy was needed. After all Lizzy KNEW Darcy could change. Yet she just cut him loose . So much for “forever” when and if she takes her vows.

The story is pretty well written except for the miraculous change of Darcy toward the ending.

Great premise, abbreviated resolution

I suppose my review title is a complete spoiler, but as I read the final 20% I recognized that the author had lost her enthusiasm for the concept. Instead, she settled for the mundane. Pity. It had great promise but wanted for a further trial or some fireworks to make it a novel worth remembering.

2024: i absolutely love this book !
2023: 5 stars. I’m actually extremely surprised to have liked this story so much. I had zero expectations because the storyline didn’t appeal much to me.
Yet it was a wonderfully well written story with excellent plot twists and above all, ODC was true to Jane Austen.
I also loved how original and creative it was.
Also, I didn’t feel that I have read this book several times before, as I did with many other variations.
Ps. This book deserves a better cover (such as one of Elizabeth Adams’)

Entertaining, but....

Sophie Lynbrook is a wonderful writer and an excellent storyteller. This imaginative story explores what would happen if Mr Darcy had an accident and lost his memory of the past year, at precisely the point in the story where one year encompasses all of his many ups and downs and important changes with regards to Elizabeth. After his loss of memory, all that he's left with is his initial bad impression of her and her family, and in reality he's just become engaged to her.

I at first thought that this would be a comedy, that it would be handled humorously. This was not the case, unfortunately, and I felt that the book suffered from being overly serious and melancholy. The thought of Darcy going from blissfully in love with Elizabeth, to stiff and disapproving and contemptuous, was just plain sad and frustrating. Then, the author decided to go completely overboard with the level of horrible behavior on the part of Elizabeth's relations. They're bad enough in the original P&P, but this was intolerable.

Just when I thought that the story was hopeless, there was a quick turn around at the end that seemed kind of rushed, almost like the author needed to wrap it up in a hurry. It's a cheerful ending, kind of like what I would have liked the whole book to be, and it rescued it for me, but not soon enough. The book is well written and well edited, although for the most part it's bogged down in depression and troubles. I recommend it, but not highly.

First, I liked the comcept of the lost memory and falling in love for a second time with the same person. Sweet, and well done. However, I felt some of Darcy's reactions were difficult to read, especially for a man in love. He was just mean in one scene. But the book was definitely worth the read.

This tale is not without a little frustration, as it is a complete twist and we all want ODC to be content after they are engaged, but this one went just the opposite, and for that the author spun for us a twist which was both new and full of mild angst. In that respect, there is much to be lauded. And there was, thankfully, the HEA we all hope for...

Potential

I can see where the author was going with this story. The idea has potential. I just found there book a little hard to read. Not as grabby as I would like. Maybe too matter-of-fact?

A Fun Variation

I enjoyed this novel, which has a nice plot twist. It is well-written and flawlessly edited. It was a treat to see the ode Mr. Darcy step into the middle of the new Mr. Darcy’s life. Amusing!

Darcy has an accident and forgot all about Elizabeth in the process. Then he's busy trying to cover up his amnesia, act like an engaged man of honour, and figure out how to cope with the crass Bennets, all with a head injury. It's a tough job but somebody's gotta do it.

Edited?

I enjoyed the story well enough, but I doubt anyone could have edited this book at all. Tons of mistakes both in grammar and punctuation, quite distracting.

I am sorry, but...

...this variation is an unmitigated bore, even with several twists on the original. At least there are very few editing errors or anachronisms.

Really it's 3.5 stars for me. Very clever use of P&P points, but I am not sure I like how the author resolved the issue.

A cute tale of forgotten memory. Good start but the end was a bit implausible & abrupt for me. Enjoyable quick read.

Cancelled memories

A different and well thought out story. The author related the theme exceptionally well with both sides of Darcy's personality.
