I’ve read all of Emily Ley’s books including her latest “Growing Boldly” and I never know how to review them. She’s definitely an author that’s been given carte blanche to write whatever she wants and it will be a best seller because she has a strong following. People love her planners and her perfect IG aesthetic so they buy her books. But, unfortunately, there’s just not a lot of substance there.

Emily is the kind of author who tries to pretend the motivational quotes that we’ve all seen floating around Pinterest are her original thoughts like “Don’t be so busy making a living that you forget to live a life.”

New in “Growing Bold” though is the ridiculous “you can be anything you want to be as long as you work hard!” nonsense. She’s veering more and more into the Rachel Hollis danger zone with every book. This book feels disjointed in that it’s her usual “embrace the simple life” yet she’s added the “I got to where I am with no education, a lotta hard work and little bit of Jesus”. Where have I heard that before?

I realized while reading her tangent on offense (that a good editor would have eliminated!) that I’m not in Emily’s target audience. So perhaps that’s why I don’t like the book as much as the average reader.

I didn’t totally hate it though.

I did like the parts when she talked about creating a company culture that values the team. I also liked that she encouraged her readers to cultivate and strengthen their relationship with God. I also enjoyed the introspective sections where she provided space for you to write down different things.

If you’re looking for a light, easy read to motivate you to reach for your goals (albeit with basic common sense advice, somewhat out-of-touch perspectives and endless bragging about her perfect life), this is the book for you!

This book had less practical advice for me than some of Emily’s other books, but I still cherished many of its pearls of wisdom. The book is a light read, even though it is close to 200 pages in length. I would recommend reading it if you need something on the lighter side and are eager for some personal motivation.

I enjoyed the journaling prompts and some of the nuggets in here came at a great time. I loved the overall message, but the writing was just okay. Lots of quotes from others tied up with cliches, which got old fast. If you’ve read any other self development books, you’re likely not going to learn anything new here.

I have mixed feelings about this one. Some of it resonated deeply with me; other parts felt like "hustle culture", which does not align with my life philosophy.

However, I loved the journaling prompts.

I was fortunate to get an advance copy of this book and I'm so glad I did! Before we get into the words on the pages, can we just agree that it's super gorgeous with such happy colors? :-)

Emily (because, clearly, we're on a first-name basis) writes a book where you feel like you have a friend cheering you on. Through her own story as well as testimonies from other women, Emily inspires the reader to BUILD a life they love. While Emily's story is one of an entrepreneur, the book doesn't make you feel like you should focus only on your career or to hustle-hustle-hustle in order to get what you want in life. Instead, Emily walks through the steps she went through to get the life she wanted and encourages the reader (through guided questions) to start identifying and building their own lives.

This book met me where I am in life right now; I feel like the overwhelming thoughts of "But what do I do now and how do I even get there and what is the next step?" are now broken down into manageable pieces. Emily says gumption and grace are what's needed to build the life you want; while I won't agree that those two qualities are everything, lol, I'll agree that they are what the world needs more of.

Incredible is the only word I can find right now. I’m in a season of my life that is making me question everything: who I am, what I want, what kind of legacy I want to leave. I ended 2020 feeling heavy and began 2021 the same. There’s a lot of unrest and stirring in my soul. This book feels like it was handwritten exactly for my soul. I’ve read all of Emily Ley’s books and hands down, this is the best one ever. It’s beautiful, it’s inspiring, it’s everything a woman needs to feel like she can do anything! I loved the BUILD concept and it’s very practical. Sometimes these types of books only reach a certain group of women. Not this one, this one is more powerful and speaks to all groups of women: stay at home moms, small business women, career women, everyone! I just love that and appreciate that so much. Any woman on any path can apply these concepts to their life and that’s what draws me to Emily. She doesn’t exclude anyone. I couldn’t be a bigger fan! I crushed this book in 2 1/2 hours, it’s that good. Goooo read it!

This book inspired deeper thought about goals and dreams I have about my business, my hopes, and my life in general. I’m not a huge fan of the style of writing where it feels like the author is trying to write a line that’s profound and quotable. I’d rather read something that felt authentic and raw. So there were maybe a bit too many of those “quotable-seeking” lines, but otherwise a worthwhile read from the woman that inspired me to declutter my life from her first book - “A Simplified Life”. Truly that first book of her’s was a life-changing book. Every book after that has been good, but not quite at that level. Maybe that says something about how we all have in us one big moment — artists sometimes face this with their music. They have an album or two that’s mind blowing, deep, and musically profound, but then they taper off and the rest of their albums seem forced and not to the quality that their first one was. That’s kind of how I feel about this book. Not to say you don’t have more than one thing to share with the world. Or that a musician can’t have more than one album in them. But I do think that’s a trend I’ve found to be more true than it is false.

My friend, Jennifer bought this beautiful book for me a couple of years ago. Not very often is a book visually pleasing to the eyes with every page but if you know Jennifer it would make sense that she would find one to give. I worked my way through it slowly because the questions were very thought provoking and as I journaled through them realizing deep seated fears that needed to be seen and threads of curiosity, explored. I enjoyed being reminded that it's ok if I want my life to look a certain way that looks different than other people. I'm allowed to focus on small acts that add up to legacy instead of one big legacy. Because all of the acts of love and care we do have staying power.

This is a very encouraging read, and beautifully done. Emily knows how to make gorgeous books. I really loved the stories she weaves into the chapters and the used of the BUILD of acronym. If you’re feeling lost or needing some encouragement, this is a great book. We all need these words at different points. I purchased the Target special edition and plan to go through the extra journaling prompts in a few weeks!

I loved listening to this. The author is one of my favorite influencers to follow. I am so glad she read the audio book (a complaint of an earlier title I listened to.) I love her approach to simplicity (not always less but making room for more). This was a perfect fit for where I am in my life - trying to build the life that I love, being true to myself, and living life to the fullest - all with love and beauty.

I am truly honored to have been a part of the Emily Ley book launch and to have received this advanced copy. I read this book over the last 2 evenings with a blanket, a hot cup of coffee and with my Simplified Floral pen, I took so many notes. This book resonated with me deeply. Emily Ley, the author of 3 other books: A Simplified Life, Grace Not Perfection, and When Less Becomes More, also the founder of Simplified. She has now written her fourth book ‘Growing Boldly – Dare to Build the Life You Love‘ to what I personally believe to be more than a piece of literature or another book to add to the shelf. This book is the nudge that we need to help point us in the right direction from a year that shook the nation and made many of us pause, reflect, and pay attention. It’s a book about much-needed hope. One of the most touching accounts to me personally in this book reminds us that even in our darkest moments when we can’t see in her words “Beauty can be found in the cracks and crevices of hard stuff we experience. God wastes nothing.”Whether you are recovering from a pandemic or still in the darkest moments of your life, the words written shared on these pages will help you examine who you are, where you are right now, and who you want to be. An especially valuable part of this experience to me was that each chapter includes a benediction and reflection questions to help you fan the spark in you to a fire. It will get you to think and examine your life, find the embers, and fan them wildly. If you are feeling stuck and alone in a deep dark valley of hopelessness, feeling you are a failure and just plain exhausted, I encourage you or the ones you know in this season to read this book. As hard as it is to face, the reality is that building a life requires action and momentum. You can’t stay still and expect things to change in your favor. There is a stark difference between staying still and being still. It’s wisdom that tells us to take shelter and be still through a storm, but we can’t stay there forever. One of the most challenging moments of our life is being able to get back up when we fall. We’d rather give up from the overwhelming, piled-up layers of doubts and lies that fill our minds. Before we know it we feel suffocated and unable to see any glimpse of clarity or hope. Emily reminds us in the book that clutter is the enemy of clarity. So how do we grow boldly when we can’t take another step? Emily breaks it down from how a seed can eventually grow into an incredible flower no matter the storms that come along. In this book, you’ll encounter true accounts from those who grew in these storms. These accounts will inspire and help you break through the chains that are holding you down and holding you back and to stand strong on your story. Emily writes “Consider that the most beautiful flowers grow from the tiniest of seeds.” As a gardener myself, I witness this fact every spring when my flowers break through the soil with so much promise. Whether we’re starting a new career, healing from depression, or facing health scares, we need to have what Emily calls “Grit” to keep going and growing boldly. The book states aptly that “You’re not helpless or hopeless, you’re not too old, too young, too inexperienced or the sum of your doubts. You’re not your childhood. The struggle is where you’ve made strong.” We must cultivate what is necessary within us to utilize our talents and dig out fears to expose them and build our life as boldly as we can. In such a turbulent time, it’s crystal clear that we only get one shot at this life. No matter where you’re at, it is YOU that gets to choose where to go from here. Growing Boldly, the title and idea that this book revolves around begs us to understand that we must make our life count. What will you do with yours?

I finished my advanced copy of Emily Ley’s “Growing Boldly” last night and am thunderstruck. Having followed Emily for years I can say her transformation to be unapologetically and “effortlessly herself” is authentic and pours out into her words.

As a woman of faith she’s rooted her connection to God and Jesus Christ as the driver of her strength, BUT this book is not only for those that subscribe to the same views. She’s framing her life in concepts and terminology that fits within her personal paradigm, and invites us to do the same within our own belief systems.

She is inspiring us, daring us, to build a life we love by sharing her own experience under the premise of if she can do it so can we. Emily shares with us her wins and how they sparked the fire within her soul to keep moving forward. And then she allows space for us to reflect on our own lives, what we want deep at our core, and what that finished product will look like once we are done.

I loved when she said at the end that she hopes “I am absolutely used up at the end of my days – having given every ounce of love until I had to more to give, having pursued every curiosity big and small, frivolous or meaningful, and having fully blossomed and poured every ounce of Emily out onto the world so other flowers can come up behind me.” I think that is all any of us want.

This book also serves as a time capsule for the Pandemic experience. 2020 took so much from us but also gave us so much if we are willing to consider the other side. Emily addresses this head on in a way that will make you consider your own experience and what has changed for the good in your life. Because from every tragedy, every hardship, there is hope, there is opportunity for you to rise above and grow, boldly.

This book is beautiful and a quick read if you are looking for something uplifting to motivate you. She says herself this book is not a “boss babe” hustle till it hurts type of book. I don’t consider it a step by step guide to take the easy path to passion either. But rather, I see this book as a map; where you are going, and where are you coming from; let’s figure out how YOU get there.

"May you allow God to lead you toward your calling each and every day, embracing who you are, where you've been, and where you're headed. Dare to trust that the path before you may be hard, but it will be worth it."

I've read most of Emily's books, and much like her others, this one is packed with beautiful images and motivational words. 🍬💫 I saved quite a few quotes that really seemed to speak right to me (and I'm sure I'll share them all as time goes by!). Unlike her other books though, this one did feel a little more like "hustle-culture" to me, which I'm never a huge fan of. 🤷🏼‍♀️

I loved all the nuggets of truth about finding what makes you come alive, what you're passionate about, where God is leading you...but I struggled with the whole concept of essentially building the life God has for you. That feels a little contradictory to me, personally. I definitely agree that we should find what makes us happy and come alive, but I could do without slipping into Rachel Hollis territory with "girl, WORK" type of vibes. I absolutely think we should work with all our heart and be curious, but this book had me grappling with what it was telling me. Is it really the life God has for me if I'm constantly hustling for it, building it?

I still got quite a bit of inspiration from this book, especially relating to my job as I'm in a bit of a weird space right now in that regard. I think there are some great thoughts laid out in this book, but I personally would stick with some of her other books like A Simplified Life and When Less Becomes More.

I have had the absolute honor of being a member of the launch team for Emily Ley’s newest book, Growing Boldly. This is so much more than just a book, this is an actual tool for building the life you want and deserve. The publication date has suffered from a few delays but I think the timing is perfect. As we get closer to life returning back to normal (whatever that means!) many of us are questioning what to do with this gift of life. How do we want to do life, what do we want it to look like, how should we do things differently post-pandemic? This book is like having a personal cheerleader in your corner, it gives you the tools and confidence to build a life you love and the reminder to always choose “heart over hustle.” The foundational principles for the book are based on B.U.I.L.D:

B - Believe in who you are and Whose you are.
U - Utilize what you have. Everything.
I - Imagine the life you dream of.
L - Love your people (and all people) well.
D - Do what matters, forget the rest.

Emily uses her gift as a writer to encourage us to live boldly but also throughout the book, and in all things Emily shares, are gentle reminders to wrap ourselves in grace. We all need this right now. The book becomes available on March 23 officially but it seems some books are being released early from various booksellers. Regardless, you’re going to want this beautiful book in your collection.

Growing Boldly is the breath of fresh air the personal development space needed! Filled with practical steps and heart-felt encouragements, Emily Ley is less life-coach drill sergeant and more your cheerleader and best friend in the trenches. Emily radiantly reminds the reader of her worth and beauty - just the way she was created - all without harsh words that shame or guilt the reader about the path she's been on. Like all of her books and Simplified products, Emily makes taking action simple and achievable. There were moments in each chapter where I felt truly seen and understood. As though Emily was sitting with me, holding my weary face in her hands, and speaking life and hope into my forgotten dreams. The journal spaces and prompts she includes helped me draw out the things I kept buried under the day-to-day obligations and responsibilities. Emily's BUILD framework provides structure to help us embrace our unique identities and dreams so we can authentically and BOLDLY pursue building a life we love. Emily is a talented storyteller and shares personal "glory stories" of people who have overcome and survived pain and suffering. Growing Boldly is one part faith, one part goals, and one part identity, and it is 100% blessing!

I wasn't going to read this book because Emily's content is highly recycled but I was intrigued. Honestly this book is probably worthy of a 2 star rating but I enjoyed the journaling prompts and thought they were helpful so I rounded up. Other than that, this book lacks substance, much like her other content. She included good ideas but they did not go beyond one paragraph. She interviewed women that likely had good stories to tell but they were two paragraphs long. Not one idea or story within the book was well developed or thought provoking.

Emily encourages grand ideas with vague input like "putting people over profits" which of course, is a great idea, but some people also need to build a company that makes money to feed their family, so expanding on that idea and how she built her brand under these principles would have been great. But rather, she talks about ideas, puts up someone else's quote about "dreaming and doing" and then ends the chapter.

Also, the more I read her content, the more phony she is to me... there are a lot of themes in the book about kindness and accepting others for their varied thoughts and experiences but after the last year on social media, that is very clearly not who Emily is.

I’ve read Emily Ley’s other books and found this one a bit repetitive. But as with all self help books there is always some bit of advice you can take away. I found two quotes that spoke to me at this time.
“To do something extraordinary means you have to break out of the ordinary………give yourself permission to make some sacrifices.”
This has been my goal of the new year. I've been waking up early every morning to walk an hour before my exercise class in order to get 10,000 steps in a day. Is it easy? No, but I am doing it. I had to give up some of my evening reading time to go to bed early but I am listening to audiobooks as I walk.
Another quote I found very interesting was by Brant Hansen in Emily’s book, “Choosing to be unoffendable, or relinquishing my right to anger, does not mean accepting injustice. It means actively seeking justice and loving mercy, while walking humbly with God. And that means remembering I’m not HIM. What a relief.”
This quote has been sitting in my mind, taking up a lot of space. That means not being offended by mean things people say to you, you have to just walk away. Also if someone says something mean about your family again you have to walk away. This is not easy to do.

Emily Ley takes you on a journey to build a life you love in her book, Growing Boldly in the sincerest of ways through telling her own stories of struggle and other women’s “glory” stories. She gives readers something to ponder at the end of each chapter thoughtful quotes, journaling pages that prompt you to dive deep into who you really are and who you want to become, as well as benedictions and reflections. This book provides inspiration to women of all ages, who are in stages and walks of life. It is truly a timeless read that I will be going back to decades from now. In Growing Boldly, Emily makes you feel as if you are sitting in the comfiest chair in her living room with a cup of tea in hand as she pours out all the wisdom she has learned serving in her various roles as a wife, mother, daughter, small business founder, and most importantly as a sister in Christ. I have read many personal development books, but this one is like none other I have had the privilege of experiencing because you don’t just read this book you experience it along with Emily holding your hand as you turn every page.

I was lucky enough to find this book on the shelf at Barnes and Noble 2 weeks ago before it’s upcoming release date next week. I love Emily Ley and her Simplified way of life, it’s refreshing especially in a society today that feels so hurried and busy. The only reason I’m giving 4 stars instead of 5 is that it felt a little preachy to me at times. Overall an encouraging book and a reminder that we only get one life to live.

Favorite quotes:

“Don’t ever ignore those little curiosities in your heart, the tugs that seemingly come from nowhere. That, my friends, is a calling.” -Emily Ley

“Let us remember to never get so busy making a living that we forget to live a life, to have the courage to flip what we think we know on its head, and to question why we’ve always done things a certain way. That is where real change begins.” -Emily Ley

“Our greatest joy isn’t found at the top of the mountain or even behind the gates of Oz. Rather, joy is found along the bumpy, beautiful, broken yellow-brick road—with every imperfect character we meet, with every way we grow along the path, and with every battle we fight through, flying monkeys or not.” -Emily Ley

I have loved every book that Emily Ley has written but Growing Boldly is seriously something special. I cried multiple times while reading it because it truly touched something within me that I hadn't even known I felt, starting with the quote "It's entirely possible to bloom in the driest of seasons, to flourish when life feels as if it's falling apart." Going into my last few classes of nursing school, the reminder that there is a time to rest but also a time to work hard and hustle was incredibly motivating to me to keep pushing in this season and allow myself to truly rest as I transition into life beyond school. I also haven't been able to stop thinking about how to see true beauty in my life as it is, and to recognize the ways that God has brought me to this current place in life and given me the tools to thrive right where I'm at. This book was simultaneously challenging and restorative in the best ways. I am so grateful to Emily for writing Growing Boldly and I know I will come back to it time and time again.

In this book, Emily was like a friend with good advice, helping to reveal and express something that I’d been carrying deep inside but had not yet articulated. And just when I thought it couldn’t get more inspiring, in true Emily Ley fashion, she takes these beautiful ideas and images and breaks them down into practical tools and steps, making ideas with huge, life-changing implications seem achievable, relevant, and tangible. The entire book truly does feel like grabbing coffee with a dear friend who loves you, believes in you, and wants the best for you. This book feels like a hug in a time when we cannot hug so many whom we love- and a gentle boost in the right direction. And best of all, Growing Boldly is designed to help you uncover what that direction is. If you are seeking clarity, need a friend, want some encouragement, and desire the full heart feeling of being known and loved, this book is for you.

Reading “Growing Boldly” is like having an encouraging conversation with your close friend. Emily pushes you to really take a close look, dive deep, discover your passions and grow into who you want to be. Using the BUILD acronym, Emily encourages her readers to reflect on their past (both the good and the hard times), figure out where you want to go and design your road map… all while serving with kindness and keeping your legacy in mind. Not only does Emily tell her own story, she also includes inspirational stories from friends who grew through their personal storms. She concludes each chapter with a benediction and thought-provoking reflection questions (extra journaling available through the Target exclusive).

“We each bring something unique and different to the world. The secret to being successful (and, if you ask me, happy) is figuring out who you are and embracing it.” -Emily Ley

There has never been a more perfect time in our lives to work on Growing Boldly. We are all in different stages & seasons of our lives, but Emily uses her own personal reflection and stories of those she’s crossed paths with to help you navigate through the fear, doubt, & uncertainty we each wrestle with daily. You know that inner critic that talks you out of what your heart truly wants? Well Emily has a plan on how you can dig deep & plant yourself where your confidence can flourish.

What she reveals is that you aren’t going to find it without being willing to implement some gumption, grit, & grace around the circumstances in our lives. Throughout this book she becomes your biggest fan — ready to help you discover your truest self. Reading this book has been a bright spot in my day and now it can be a part of yours too! Grab a copy!

I received an advanced copy of this book and am so glad I did! I feel like this book is so very special. The magic in it is that it can speak to any woman at any point in her journey. I have been a stay at home mom since my son was born 6 years ago. I have been on a journey of trying to figure out what I want to be when I “grow up,” even though I am 32 and probably should know by now. This book has inspired me to start a new journey, not to start a new journey but to take pride in what I am doing right this moment! I am a great mom, and getting better at housework, which is not my spiritual gift. I can be proud of being the best wife and mother I can and I love that that is how I am called to grow boldly! My soul is on fire to BUILD the life I was designed to live.

This book is beautiful- both in its physical cover and pages and in the message. I have long admired Emily Ley for her gracious words and her authentic presence online but this book forever sealed the deal for me. There is so much wisdom her words about grit, servant leadership and the gracious evolution of our lives.

The vibrant hard cover, interior quotes and accompanying artwork are gorgeous. I have to read it a second time and participate in the journal prompts because I didn’t want to spoil the beauty of the book on my first time around. This would be a perfect gift for any woman you care about who could benefit from Emily’s wisdom as a daughter, wife, mother, business owner, leader and follower of God.
