Sure there may be some story beets that Fernwithy has created for the characters that I might not personally imagine those characters having. However, there’s one thing that is undeniable! That the writing makes all of the characters feel so real and so alive.
I loved that Haymitch knew and even held Peeta’s as a baby, and I am SO interested to see what Haymitch will think during the reaping of Katniss and Peeta.
This series has been everything I was looking for, making the world of The Hunger Games feel so much more fleshed out and alive!
A bit of a slow start (but this could just be me and my circumstances), but it feels like it belongs to canon. It is so interesting to see how the games work for a mentor/victor. It deals with the loss of the (first) tributes, being the only victor and finding your place in this in between world: not being part of the capitol but also not being part of the regular district people. The isolation and the forced isolation from other victors, because Snow is aware how powerful they can be if they get too close. I am not sure how I feel about Flickerman, but we will see. The ending is just chefs kiss, I am so in love with it! Cannot wait to read the next book!
This fanfic describes Haymitch’s Victory Tour and his games mentoring, mostly his first. This story is more original and less wedded to canon than the End of the World, and less restricted by a three-act structure. In my opinion, Fernwithy’s writing is better in this fanfiction, and I simply like it more.
I enjoyed the descriptions of all the districts during the Victory Tour, their Victors or lack thereof, and the seeds of rebellion that are planted. The Fifty-first Games are heartbreaking, because you know very well that both District Twelve tributes are going to die. It’s how they die, and how another tribute wins, that becomes interesting, precisely because you know the outcome ahead of time.
There’s some good writing in this, with some excellent OCs. There’s also excellent use of canon characters like Beetee, and Haymitch as always is a great narrator. Although I could see why some might like The End of the World better, I prefer this one. Perhaps because it’s bleak and not tied to a single event.
Excellent writing, I love this fan fiction series so much, it’s so good it might as well be canon, super well written irl really complex and detailed characters and Haymitch is written perfectly and really matches his character we see later in the books, he’s really smart too.
