"Haymitch, I think you know a great deal about love."
"Righ, that's me. A real romantic lead. Great with the sappy greeting card poetry. Always --"
"I remember Indigo. I remember her, and I remember Maysilee. I remember your mother and your brother. I talked to them quite a lot during your Games. Haymitch, I've seen the way you've been working for these kids. I saw the way they talked to you from the arena, and I saw you work every connection in the Capitol making a miracle for them. You should have seen yourself this year. I know Snow thinks it was about your politics, but I don't believe it for a second. You should let them in. You should let yourself love them. You're at your best when you love people."

you already know I've been talking about this fanfic nonstop for weeks it's just so good and the relationship between haymitch and katniss here i could cry. i could cry and i will cry.

Seeing Peeta and Katniss’ Story outside of the lens’s of Katniss’ perspective was once again a new and refreshing way to enjoy the story of the original hunger games.

Specifically I loved to see how Haymitch was pulling the strings on the outside of the arena! This moment within the book just painted a picture of how beautiful Haymitch was pulling the strings!

“Now, you listen to me. Everybody listen! I never had money when I was a kid. I was so broke I wore my daddy's old shoes to school, and I sent my brother to school in Momma's. But that didn't make me useless, and you're not useless, either. Do you hear me?"

"I guess."

"I do need money for their medicine. But money's not all there is. You believe in them, don't you?"

"I do," the girl says.

“Well, I do, too. And they need that as much as the other." I signal to Chaff and he hands me the sparkler. I hand it to her. "You take it out in the night. You be the girl on fire.”

When I read these lines I felt everything from excitement, fear, and sadness all at once! Excellent writing, creates an such suspense.

The main reason I give the four stars is there were some moments I did feel a little bit more like the narrative dragged or felt a little overcooked so to speak which is understandable given the events that occur in the arena happen over the course of weeks so of course it would make sense that there is only so much Haymitch could have been doing during those windows of time.

Ultimately a great Hunger Games retelling in a very unique perspective!

Considering this was written years before TBOSAS and SOTR it’s a masterpiece
