Zhang Jue truly was the epitome of unrequited love—the quiet passion in yearning for so long that he had accepted that even simply being in Chen Boqiao's presence was enough, because he would never be worthy of his attention or affection. 🥹 That really broke my heart; even the extent of the lengths he considered to remove that longing was something I related to on a personal level.
“It’s because I want to be with someone I like.”
It was so sweet to see their relationship slowly evolve from simply being in each other's protective care to falling in love. 🥺 Whether it was Chen Boqiao's patient reassurances of Zhang Jue's own insecure doubts about his complicated self-worth - a mess that doesn’t belong anywhere, or Zhang Jue's own considerate care for his well-being. These kind gestures and tender nudges gradually paved the way to a more intimate and meaningful connection of mutual want that, even with the ABO context included, was captured in a tender way.
The writing was so soft and gentle; the spice and fluff were full of feels. 💞 But, more than anything else, I adored how the translations captured the deliberate intent in the word choices. And for that one instant, where Zhang Jue's past confession intertwined with Chen Boqiao's present understanding of his feelings—my heart just ascended. Such a beautiful and heart-wrenching scene. 🫠 🫠
“If he only had one umbrella, one bouquet, one key to his heart, Chen Boqiao would give it all to Zhang Jue.”
Zhang Jue's teenage crush of being hopelessly in love could be seen as pitiful; his admiration, even laughable. But, at times, I thought he was so defiant in how deeply he cared that even at the risk of rejection or waiting for Chen Boqiao, he wouldn't endanger losing his love or opinion of him. 🤧 So, when Chen Boqiao, on his own terms, began to see him in a new light - wanted to keep him forever - it felt almost cathartic for him to realize that someone had cared for him all this time; he had just failed to see it. 😤
The political and military plot points were vague and lacked detail, but it didn't bother me much. 🤷🏻♀️ It was frustrating how stoic Chen Boqiao behaved toward him at times, and having more of his POV would have been nice. Still, when their relationship came full circle in such a wholesome, cute way with all the kisses, sex, and love, my heart felt so full for their eventual happiness. 🩷 🩷
This is just a short novel that I've read in one sitting. I can't say that this is angsty but I got a tinge of pain in my heart a few times because of Zhang Jue's selfless, unrequited love. For years, he kept his feelings to himself and never asked anything. He never expect anything in return. It's painful to see him that way, especially when he has a little self-esteem and he always looked down on himself.
I understand why most of the readers got a mixed feelings towards Chen Boqiao at the first half because of how he handled Zhang Jue's feelings for him, because I sometimes felt frustrated too. But I can also understand that he also haven't fallen in love ever and he's trying to figure out his real feelings for Zhang Jue without being influenced by Zhang Jue's feelings for him. Their romance is kind of slow burn, but you can see how Chen Boqiao slowly falls in love with his introverted ex-schoolmate and how he dealt with it.
This novel has no spectacular plot lines, but focused more on how the two cultivated their relationship. This is worth the read and you'll be introduced to a precious character you wanted to protect at all cost. Throughout my time reading, I just want to boost Zhang Jue's confidence and tell him how precious he is and he's perfect the way he is. I recommend this novel to everyone. Just a reminder that it has mature contents. It won't waste your time because even if you ended up not liking this, it only has 51 chapters and can be read in one sitting. But I'm pretty sure that even if you didn't end up loving this, you won't hate this as well. Try reading this one and judge for yourself!
This novel frustrates me a lot. It has a very interesting premise but I feel like 卡比丘 / Ka Bi Qiu didn't maximize everything about it properly. 日落大道 / Sunset Boulevard has the potential to be a really solid novel but it stopped short on a lot of things.
I was looking forward with the plot honestly, especially with the politics, the military background, and the complicated relationship between the Asian League and the New Independent Republic. But I noticed the author didn't really want to delve into the politics too much, so we only get to have the surface points and descriptions about it which is kind of confusing some times. There's also a lot of conflicting details that's probably left like that purposely by the author to be filled by our own imagination, which I don't really mind but, the world-building had so much potential to feel grand and intense, but it feels so distant. It's become boring most of the time to be honest.
What truly carried the novel for me was Zhang Jue. I really like Zhang Jue a lot, and his love for Chen Boqiao is absolutely stupendous. I actually pushed through to finish this just to see more on their development. Just to see if Zhang Jue gets his happy ending. His personality is quiet, obedient, and painfully self-aware. He is the kind of person who loves silently, who never expects anything in return, and who convinces himself that even loving someone from afar is already enough. Zhang Jue's devotion feels almost frightening in how persistent it is. For more than a decade, he loved Chen Boqiao without complaint, without pride, and without demanding recognition. His love for Chen Boqiao is full of pain. At the same time, Zhang Jue's biggest weakness is also what makes him so heartbreaking: his lack of confidence in himself. He truly believes that he is not good enough for Chen Boqiao, and that belief shapes almost every decision he makes. He never pushes, never demands, and never dares to hope too much. Even when Chen Boqiao shows him care, Zhang Jue interprets it cautiously, afraid that he might be misunderstanding kindness as affection. His constant restraint makes it obvious that he's always prepared to be left behind. It's so sad.
Chen Boqiao, on the other hand, is probably the biggest source of my frustration in this novel. I understand his character really, he is rational, reserved, and someone who expresses affection through actions rather than words. We do get his internal thoughts throughout the story, and it was interesting to watch how he slowly became fascinated with Zhang Jue. The way he observed Zhang Jue, teased him, and gradually allowed him into his life showed the beginning of emotional change. But even with that understanding, I still wished the author gave him stronger, more visible emotional reactions. I kept waiting for a moment where Chen Boqiao would clearly reassure Zhang Jue, something direct and undeniable. Although he did show care—protecting him, choosing him, and eventually committing to him—I often felt that Zhang Jue was left to interpret everything on his own. That lack of assurance made Zhang Jue even more meek and careful, and it frustrated me deeply. There were so many moments where I just wanted Chen Boqiao to say the words clearly: that he loved him, that he chose him, that Zhang Jue didn't have to keep doubting himself. Like it took a lot of time to actually give Zhang Jue the assurance he deserves! It's so frustrating!
There's so much imbalance right from the start. Zhang Jue loves him too much, while Chen Boqiao is very distant and controlled. Their first time together, which felt really sad and almost humiliating, perfectly captured that imbalance. It wasn't even dreamy, but very awkward. That scene shows how Zhang Jue views intimacy as something fragile and uncertain, while Chen Boqiao approaches it more practically. The difference in their expectations makes them so uneven.
Anyway, what striked me here the most is about the contraceptions in this novel. It made me so sad when Zhang Jue secretly bought contraceptives, because why is the one bearing the child always thinking about the weight of the possibility of pregnancy. The fear of pregnancy and the anxiety about consequences are burdens he prepared for quietly without expecting support. But then Chen Boqiao surprised me when he got a vasectomy after Zhang Jue gave birth. It felt like one of the few clear acts of responsibility and commitment from him, showing that he was finally sharing the weight Zhang Jue had been carrying alone.
In the end, good that I finished this because Zhang Jue is happy. After loving Chen Boqiao from afar for eleven years, he finally gets to be with the person he has waited for all that time. Honestly, I am that easy! If Zhang Jue is happy, then I am satisfied! I don't care about Chen Boqiao, as long as Zhang Jue is happy.
And the author truly writes beautifully. Kudos to the translators and editors! Even the pregnancy bits are so beautifully well done, like the description about it made me dizzy for how good it is. Their prose flows in a way that quietly slips into your emotions, sometimes without you realizing it. They have a way of making small gestures feel meaningful, and moments of silence feel heavy with unspoken feelings. Unfortunately, that same restraint from the author is also what made parts of the story frustrating for me. I wanted more, more depth, more clarity, more emotional payoff.
Such a beautiful story! Their love was so sweet that it would make anyone envious. Nothing dramatic yet the feelings for each other are as clear as spring water. Truly warmed my heart. ❤️
It's more like a 3.5-3.75 for me but not because it wasn't good.
I'll explain
So the story itself is quite cute. The MC is the gong this time and the ML is the shou...and this shou is already in love with the MC so no surprise here.
Of course, our MC isn't clueless about his feelings but he rejected the ML when they were younger and now they're both falling in love as they get to spend more time together.
It's not exactly a groundbreaking plot, it's pretty idle. The part regarding the MC wasn't explained properly, it was there just for the author to have an excuse to make these 2 talk to eachother. I didn't particularly understand why the ML was in love with the MC either, to be honest... I feel like their relationship was more "telling" than "showing" but that might be just my own perception of it.
I didn't hate it, I finished it in one sitting while on night shift because it's really short (~500 pages) and knowing I dropped a few books in the last week, it feels good to finally read something.
All in all, a cute omegaverse, pretty forgettable imo.
This was a sweet story, especially towards the end, with plenty of fluff. I struggled with the unrequited love at the beginning and felt sorry for the MC. The first time they made love didn’t sit well with me, it felt too mechanical and lacked romance. While I understand it was an important part of the story, the MC crying himself to sleep afterward was just sad.
That said, I appreciated how the male lead changed by the end. I’m also glad the story didn’t drag on unnecessarily. Just a short read, 50 chapters.
I pretty much went in not knowing what it was about except that it was an A/B/O novel, which is a concept I'm familiar with, but this was a short and sweet read. I say 'sweet' but honestly the bittersweet feeling that arose due to Zhang Jue's (MC) unrequited love for Chen Boqiao (ML) and which lasted until probably halfway through the story is one of my favourite aspects about this novel.
ZJ had been pining for CBQ for many, many years and he is truly an interesting character because even though he was insecure and had low self-esteem, he was also courageous and straightforward. He wasn't the typical omega that was petite and soft. Instead, because of some complications, he was basically an alpha for most of his life. And being neither a 'proper' omega nor alpha became the source of his low self-esteem. Not once did he ever think he was good enough for CBQ - he was content just orbiting around CBQ and my heart ached for him. Even so, he was always the one who took the first step towards CBQ and he didn't mind being the one who loved more if it meant he could have CBQ with him. The twinge in my heart as I read the first half of the story was so real.
CBQ on the other hand, was understanding and patient. He very quickly grasped what ZJ was like and eventually, ZJ became his only exception to everything which was such a delight to read. Their interactions became tinged with tenderness when CBQ more or less realised his feelings for ZJ. And when they finally got together, CBQ was so sweet on ZJ and did right by him. I enjoyed the pacing and progress of their relationship a lot as they learned the curves and edges of each other while being on the run. This brings me to my next point: the plot. The plot was weak and there were a number of plot holes. I understood ZJ's motive for 'rescuing' CBQ but I didn't know what the President had against CBQ that he was even being framed in the first place. I'd say that this novel is more character-driven so if you're looking for a plot-driven story, this is not for you.
3.8/5 (But i already noted so many stuff to be one whole review lmao.. bare with me)
Zhang Jue aku padamu… tapi kenapa kamu bucin sekali hahahahha….
✅Banyak adegan sex dijamin memuaskan ..khas lah Ka Bi Qiu kayak gimana nulisnya…
✅Jujur aku hampir nangis sebenarnya… tapi
Hard spoiler
Means….. THE STORY IS STILL ENGAGING even after i score it mid
How am I supposed to rate this novel objectively when I partly want to give it 4 stars but then I remember I was pretty much caught up on the proses and highlighted so many part of the books, it was not right not to give it 5 stars.
I love reading about Chen Boqiao from the very beginning perplexed, confused, curious, slightly territorial, to later becoming protective, kind, and sweet toward Zhang Jue. Watching CB falling slowly and hopelessly in love with ZJ is a wonder.
One of the many lovely quotes.
“If he only had one umbrella, one bouquet, one key to his heart, Chen Bogiao would give it all to Zhang Jue. Saying ‘love' may be difficult, but making a choice was almost too easy.”
Unrequited love always hits different for me especially when the other person has been pining for years.
Chen Boqiao, our main lead is a very interesting character I must admit. He was never a person who was great with feelings yet was always very respectful and kind towards our main character. Love seeing the process of him being confused to slowly fall deeply in love with the mc at the end.
I’d say, if you are looking for a slow-burn and character-driven story this one might work well for you.
I liked it and how the abo universe was in this. Chen Boqiao was like a neutral dude you learn to like. I liked Zhang Jue a lot but I loved their relationship.
Zhang Jue had a lot of insecurities but Chen Boqiao was helpful and somewhat a stable reassurance, especially when giving confidence to Zhang Jue about their relationship.
Adding new notes, as this is the second time I DNF and I got to 50% of the novel but I just couldn't keep going. I tried getting into the first part listening to the audio drama and it helped a bit (although I think the voice actors weren't casted correctly because his voices were too similar). Chapters later I still feel bored, I don't care about the characters and both MCs have zero chemistry. The narration feels emotionless and doesn't evoke anything in me. The plot isn't interesting to keep going either. I read spoilers about the couple but it isn't enough to continue. I'm sad because I've seen good things about this novel so I didn't expect this to happen. I think that was my last try with this story.
This is what I originally said: Actually sad to drop this one. I had high hopes for it but I am not into the plot so far and I am not liking the chapters structure. Might pick it up again someday.
i’m just a sucker for the unrequited love to happy ending trope. kinda wished the author indulged us as to why zhang jue was so in love with chen boqiao to begin with other than he just seemed mesmerized by him and fell in love not knowing much about him, but…no huge complaints. this was so cute and sweet toward the later half! a short read that i probably could’ve finished in a sitting or two if i had more time.
