As a way to survive the emotional rollercoaster of the last couple of years, I have been making a concentrated effort to appreciate joy whenever I can find it in my life. Dr. Rossy’s book gives me life-changing insights and examples to explore on this journey every time I open the covers. It is so much more than a book about eating; for me, it is a pocket guide to listening to my body, from top to bottom, including my often-ignored senses and feelings.
An expansion on her first book, The Mindfullness-Based Eating Solution—which is an excellent primer on mindfulness and mindful eating—this volume takes us through five steps to “eat mindfully with pleasure, embrace yourself with kindness and compassion, and live with joy.” Dr. Rossy brings her diverse backgrounds in psychology, Buddhism, yoga, and mindful eating to the pages, along with acknowledgement of her personal experiences with drug use, poor body image, and other harmful habits. Her guiding words are told with humor, simplicity, compassion, medical authenticity, and easy-to-follow practices.
As I read through each of the 50 sections within the five steps, I found myself continually shaking my head Yes! “I know that feeling!” “That’s a great way to put that!” And, most importantly, “I can do that!” The Savoring Practices at the end of each of the sections are often very simple, even for the busiest person, and a very effective way to reinforce what you have just learned.
In a world full of negativity and joy-robbing rules about what to wear and what to eat (or not eat), savor every word of this book that encourages you to feel good, treat your senses, and eat what sounds good. How can you not love a book that tells you, “Yes, dear, we can always have cake.”
