This is a Gothic murder mystery with a dose of paranormal fantasy. The protagonist Midnight Gunn was born during a solar eclipse and the passing of a comet, which left him with a strange birth mark and supernatural powers, which he uses to help the police. The story is set in 1860 but at times felt a bit too modern to me - I think this could be bad timing as I had just finished a literary crime story set in the same time period. The story is fast paced and full of suspense with great characters. I liked Midnight but feel his character could have been a bit darker, as he was nice to everyone, even the villains. If all you want is an easy read and a fast plot, then this is for you.
What an amazing new Gothic mystery read this book was. It took me right back to the books I used to read before I became so obsessed with everything having to be about romance and boy did I forget how much I love reading these types of books.
From the very first page of this book I was dragged right into it's mysterious depths and I didn't put it down until the mystery had been uncovered and I couldn't turn any more pages on my kindle! The Hollows is set in London in the 1860's so that's already a great setting for any author, however this author managed to build her world into that setting so well that I could practically smell all the smells of that time as the characters did and felt as if I was stalking the streets of London right alongside Midnight Gunn whilst trying to work out the mystery. The cast of characters are also well built. Each character is memorable, no matter how small a part they played, and their description and characteristics are well crafted.
Now, down to the crux. Did I enjoy this story even though there was very little romance in It? Well yes! Yes I did enjoy it indeed, in fact I fell in love with it. It was magical, it was heart pounding and it was entertaining. I really didn't put this book down until I'd read it from cover to end and there are not that many books that I manage to read all in one sitting without picking up my phone to check it halfway through, but this is one that managed to capture my attention and I just had to know what was going to happen next. It is definitely a page turner of a book. If you're worried that you won't enjoy this book as there is very little romance, then don't be. Trust me, give this book a try as you won't notice the romance missing, also there will be other books in this series so there is plenty scope for the future.
The Hollows: A Midnight Gunn novel gets the full five stars from me. I really enjoyed reading this book and know that it's one I will pick up to re read again. I also can't wait to read the next one in the series to see what will happen next for our intrepid hero and his friends. This really is a must read book.
Gothic detective, paranormal, fantasy mystery. Interesting detective with his special powers and kindness to the less fortunate. Long explanations, and a few details left dangling. Series forthcoming for sure.
The Hollows This is the first Gothic novel I have read in years and it was a treat. The flawed hero, the demonic night attacker, the mutilated, little girl, and so much more. The fast paced action kept the pages turning as you follow Midnight and his quest to bring down the night terror of a demon sucking the souls from his victim. To do so, he and his detective friend even become ensnared in an opium den before the dastardly villain meets his end—or does he?
So let's start with: this story was intriguing. The plot and characters held a lot of potential. However, the actual story and storytelling made it difficult to enjoy.
The characters: changed personalities every other page. They didn't develop. They just reacted however they wanted whenever they wanted. The relationships: forced (I saw this child once, she is special and all I can think about enough to adopt). Also, the character has these powers and how they should operate, but then he acts counterintuitive to them (I can sense emotions and memories when I touch people, let me just shake this random person's hand).
The decisions: made no sense 90% of the time (oh, my friend might be dying: let me go home and change and enjoy a meal before trying to find him). The villain: not explored enough to be interesting
The world: More research needed to be done on 1800s England. Practices and ideas were presented as commonplace that wouldn't have been in the time this should have been.
The "magic:" Fully explained most things up front, rather than letting things naturally be explained. Didn't have a lot of depth. The other things that came up throughout were forced and didn't feel natural; I had no idea that it should be expected, so it didn't make sense.
There was no sense of time; it could be hours or days and you wouldn't know. Everything in this "mystery" was solved within pages of being introduced; well, isn't that lucky that this one thing we thought we should do immediately had results, and oh look, this one person I hired randomly is connected to the villain and knows about him. It was constant coincidence!!! And tied to that, things would be explored at really random times; it would just be random tangents tangentially tied to one tiny thing.
The villain is except the one seven-year-old that was safe despite being found in the exact same state as the others. Hmm? Well, "she blocked her mind," the MC says; but, umm, how did that save her soul ?
It had so much potential, and I wanted to enjoy this, but there were just too many things in the way that ruined the experience for me.
The Hollows is a Gorgeously Gothic Must Read full of Spine tingling Thrills, Murder, Magic, Wickedly Funny Humor and a Tasty Tease of Romance!
Get ready step back in time to The Smokey Streets of 1860 London as Midnight Gunn hunts down a Supernatural Killer, who is preying on innocent souls, can he keep his supernatural powers a secret? And with the help of loyal friends stop a bloodthirsty monster?
Midnight aka Smokin' Gunn! ; ) is a delicious mix of Batman The Dark Knight Detective & a Supernatural Sherlock Holmes, he's sexy, witty and fearless with a brilliant mind!
Way beyond 5 Stars!!! C.L. Monaghan has created an absolutely addictive series that will keep U craving more. I can't wait for the next book!!! This may even be my favorite book of hers yet!
This is my first read by this author, and also my first delve into this genre so I wasn't sure what to expect from the writing or the story. I certainly wasn't disappointed though!
Set in 1800's London, Midnight Gunn possesses a special gift that Inspector Gredge regularly calls upon him for in his criminal investigations.
Monaghan definitely kept the mystery there up until the closing pages, and a great mystery it was. I could tell she had thoroughly researched topics relating to the book with her detailed writing, and I actually felt immersed into life back then.
The Hollows gives us some great characters that I can't wait to meet again, especially little Miss Polly. And of course, the infamous Mr Gunn!
A very interesting detective story with a paranormal twist or two. A great read from beginning to end. I am not a big fan of who done it's, but this one, I couldn't put down.
First time reading this authors work and hopefully will not be the last. This Paranormal gothic mystery. Set in Victorian England it introduces us to the mysterious Midnight Gunn and his good friend Inspector Arthur Gredge. We get tiny bits of Midnight's background the unusual timing of his birth is supernatural powers and his friendships. He is a man who prefers to stay in the shadows. Gredge calls on Midnight to come and visit a crime scene when he gets strange witness statement. Who is the man they call Spring-heeled Jack, going around leaving devistation and horror wherever he is. Can Author and Midnight stop this mysterious wall jumping beast. I have to say I really enjoyed this story. It was fast paced, short chapters, atmospheric and an interesting plot. Cannot wait for the next book.
I thought I was going to love this book and I am happy to report I absolutely did. We follow Midnight, a unique backstory and full of magical questions, curiosity and aura. He is tasked with assisting the police in a murder with potential supernatural connections and he uses his unique abilities to crack the case.
Set in late 1800s London, Sherlock Holmes meets Jack the ripper vibes as you explore the belly of a time that is full of danger but a weird mysticism. It was a weirdly enchanting setting I couldn't get enough of and that is really my entire review. You just wanted to more of this world, characters and story.
I highly recommend this book, unique characters a story that slowly reveals itself with smaller stories connected in and villain that is truly self motivated which is nice to see, they were a VILLAIN in the truest sense of the word and I love that from my supernatural mystery novels.
I saw Gothic murder mystery and knew I had to read it. Unfortunately, it did not live up to my expectations. Despite Midnight’s powers over death and darkness, he was a white knight character. He was good at everything, perfect in appearance, wealthy background, intelligent, firm morals, and detective skills.
I don’t like protagonists without flaws. When they’re perfect, they’re never able to become people, and instead remain as characters on a page that can only be two dimensional. Midnight Gunn’s failing was worse than being two dimensional. He was a fantasy.
This book was interesting and I liked the characters a lot, however, I wasn’t a huge fan of the writing style and needed to reread some versus several times before I fully understood what was going on. I would still recommend it to someone, but wouldn’t be the first book on that list.
A Necromancer working for the London Police hunting Spring-Heeled Jack. Sort of. This is an unusual and inventive story about a man born with supernatural power over light and darkness, who seems evil but does good.
The story is written well enough, although the characters are not particularly distinct, and I lost track of who was who a few times. I liked Midnight Gunn, although it is remarkable that no one even seems to notice what a bizarre name he has. Things don't go well for Gunn overall but he's coddled enormously by the police and lives in a strange halfway world where he's really wealthy but has few trappings or social requirements of it, mixing with lower class easily and without any affect on his status.
The world is uncertain as well. It feels more or less like normal Victorian England, but everyone seems to be comfortable with and accepting of slight supernatural events and persons.
It took me a little while to get into the story but once I did it had it all! Crime, mystery, occult as well as friendship and family. Midnight Gunn is a fascinating character well round by Arthur, Giles and Mrs. P and then comes along Polly. Everything Midnight thought about himself changed forever. Plus the nice little twist at the end. A nice reading adventure
A very interesting, fast paced novel. I'm not really a fan paranormal stories but this was so different it just seemed normal somehow. Definitely on to book 2.
I liked the whole premise, and it’s fast paced right out of the gate. Interesting characters and I could picture the areas in the city they mentioned. I will be telling my friends to get this book!
Midnight Gunn is not your typical gentlemen. Although being of the upper crust of London society, he prefers to lead a secluded life and spend his time with working people. His only friend outside of his home is an investigator for Scotland Yard, Arthur Gredge. Midnight helps Inspector Gredge find killers. When several people are attacked and a young woman from a wealthy family killed, they combine forces to find the monster, Spring Heeled Jack. Midnight uses his special talents in the investigation. That’s all I will say about the story, because of spoilers. I will say this was like a Sherlock Holmes story, only one with supernatural elements thrown in. I actually thought it was better than any Sherlock Holmes mysteries I’ve read. I thought this story was very good, well-written, lots going on and fun to read. I enjoyed it very much. I’m so happy there are two more books because I really like the characters.
Massive apologies to the author and to myself for waiting so long to read this one after it was sent to me for review.
An action-packed Victorian-era murder mystery that has the perfect mixture of paranormal characters, snarky dialogue, and relationship building to create a fully engaging world that I am desperately wanting more of. Midnight Gunn is definitely going on my list of favorite characters of 2019.
How did I not know about this book sooner? The Hollows by C.L. Monaghan is my first read by this author and I was completely hooked from the first chapter. A gothic paranormal who-dunnit mystery set in the 1800's. I love this world the author created and its characters. Midnight Gunn is definitely going on my "Must Buy" list.
Ms. Monaghan did a wonderful job of entwining myth and mystery. Midnight is a likeable yet complex character, and his story had me gripped from the beginning. This story has it all... suspense, drama, great writing and an addictive storyline that will keep you turning the pages.
This was a super fun, fast horror gothic read! I enjoyed it much more than I thought I would - while I do not know if I will continue the series right now, it was a fantastic book to read while I was on vacation. We do not have a lot of books like this one out for the masses to read, so the language, take, and spin on the occult and supernatural in the Victorian era was a breath of fresh air!
Sherlock Holmes with a supernatural twist. Not my usual genre, but so glad I picked this up. I loved the story, and am eager to read more of Mr. Gunn’s (mis) adventures. Please read if you have the chance. You won’t be disappointed.
1860 D.I. Arthur Gredge is investigating the death of Miss Emeline Rowbotham with the help of Midnight Gunn. A man with special powers. But this is not the first death, but what of a motive. An entertaining Gothic, supernatural mystery.
When Detective Inspector Arthur Gredge needs help finding a serial assailant, who leaves his victims' minds trapped in a void, and the last victim, Emmeline Rowbotham, is found dead, he has no recourse but to call on Midnight Gunn, a paranormal investigator who has a way of communicating with the powers Inspector Gredge would rather avoid if at all possible. Still, when he discovers one of the victims is an impoverished child named Polly, Gunn takes a personal interest in not only her but the other victims of the assaults, all the while concerned about the dark energy he has to call upon to assist in finding this mad man.
The Hollows: A Midnight Gunn Novel is a historical Gothic detective mystery set in 1860's London, and drew me in from the moment I opened to the first page and discovered where Midnight Gunn got his name and his paranormal powers of deduction. This is an exciting and frightening adventure that takes us places we aren't sure we want to go and leaves us hoping for more Midnight Gunn mysteries when we reach the end. I believe this author is onto something huge here, and look forward to her next exciting exploits into the paranormal.
