I read The Hollows quite a while ago so I felt like I'd been waiting a long time for this, but it was worth the wait! I was especially excited it was going to be set in Scotland, my heart home.

Monaghan takes us right back to Victorian London before heading to Edinburgh and the clan's final destination for their summer holiday and holiday home hunt - but something mysterious is happening yet again. Could it be a blast from the past?

The language and writing in this is exactly as I expected from Monaghan and a Gothic mystery - everything about it felt like I was back in times gone by.

We're introduced to a couple of new characters and revisit old ones - especially gotta love little Miss Polly and her etiquette learning, she's a funny little character! We're also introduced to some fresh mythological creatures - one being the namesake of the book.

The mystery itself was well developed and well written, and you can tell Monaghan has done some real in depth research in order to bring the book together. Another great story from this author!

This is another riveting gothic mystery. Midnight Gunn remains mysterious with his dark supernatural abilities, but he becomes more lovable as you see his softer side with his growing 'family'/estate, gathered in book 1. The story line and pacing continues to remind me of a supernatural Sherlock Holmes in its engaging intrigue, charming aesthetic, endearing characters, and dramatic mystery. I cannot wait to see what happens next in Midnight's ever-restless life.

Midnight Gunn, along with Polly and his staff, decides to get out of London for the summer and they move to a cottage near a distant cousin’s estate. There have been recent deaths by suspicious circumstances in the area and Midnight investigates. This leads to trouble for everyone. His cousin, Felicity Adams, is acting very strange and Midnight’s determined to find out why. He is called away and then all hell breaks loose because someone from his past is targeting the people he cares most about. Polly meets and adopts the Barghest, a large dog-like fae creature, who becomes another member of the household as Polly’s new protector. I really enjoy these stories. The writing is good, and I become immersed in what is happening. There’s never a dull moment. I also enjoy how serious Midnight is about being Polly’s father. She has become his largest concern and he tries so hard to do everything that he should to keep her happy and healthy.

I love Midnight

Your gonna love this book even better than the first one. Midnight takes the family to Scotland he stays in a cottage near a cousin then strange things start to happen. Polly is kidnapped and Midnight loves his daughter so his temper kicks in when Polly goes missing. All help breaks loose. I sure hope midnight and a certain maid have a future. Can't wait for the next book. Highly recommend this series

Midnight Gunn has a growing household and has found himself restricted as his need to be free to test his paranormal limits is squelched by his now tight quarters and the lack of those who know of his abilities. And he's still working past the horrors that were brought upon by his run-in with Hemlock Nightingale. It is his search for a country home that brings his newly gained family into a new nightmare, one that involves the fable of a large and frightening wolf-like creature. And as the missing persons list begins to grow, so too do the strange happenings surrounding Midnight and his adopted daughter Polly. Will he be able to save his daughter and the others who are swiftly becoming important to him? And what does any of it have to do with the strange happenings that call him back to his London home?

This plot just become thicker as the story goes on. I found myself suspicious of everyone and trusting no one. I kept hoping Midnight could protect at least those closest to him. It was an edge of the seat thriller that continues Midnight's story, and I found myself sucked in just as deeply. The layers were consistently built upon, which only opened the door to more questions about each of the characters. And there were certain characters I just wanted to give a good throat punch.

This author has a vivid and brilliant imagination. Each page is filled with more details about the Gothic era in which the story takes place and brings to mind the wonderful and mysterious who-done-its of the past. I loved each and every moment and can't wait until Midnight Gunn comes up against his next foe.

Actually got this by accident, thinking it was a different series. I was moderately favorable toward the first in the series, but not particularly interested. This one takes off right after the last book, with the Big Bad Guy still somewhere out there, and Midnight Gunn (a name nobody in the series seems to comment on or think is unusual) is Concerned.

Gunn is a good example of a male lead written by a female author, that is it doesn't quite connect and feels more like what a woman might imagine a perfect man being rather than an actual male with male thoughts, motivations, and presuppositions.

The story was interesting enough, with Scottish mythology such as Pookas and the titular Barghest featuring, as well as a spooky fae castle. What it is exactly Gunn does and can do with this light and dark powers is not particularly clear, nor is the extent of how powers manifest in the world. His adopted daughter Polly seems to have some sort of aura vision power, and his enemy is a necromancer, but its not clear how common this is, and it does not at any level appear to have affected the world to have people with these powers in it.

Still, its entertaining and likable enough, and Gunn is a bit more distinct a personality than in the previous book although the women all kind of blend together and are difficult to distinguish.

Another great sequel to the three book series but still littered with Americanisms or American spellings which ruin it.

We say Curtains not Drapes, we don’t put Zeds in words like Realise or Materialise and we do have U’s in words like Flavour and Favour. Please get these terrible spellings and Americanisms out of this otherwise really good book!

Other than that, another great read and very well written book where you actually form real attachments to the characters Midnight, Polly, Laura, Mrs P and Giles. Still cannot warm to the fussy governess though who seems very weak and spoilt for somebody teaching a lovely young girl like Polly.

Hopefully we will see Midnight realise his feelings for Laura and giving Polly a new mum which would be the icing on the proverbial cake!!

Fabulous book by author C.L. Monaghan. Her historical detail is amazing, and I love the world she has created for main character Midnight Gunn. This book brings Midnight, Polly and most of their household staff to Scotland. C.L. writes a compelling story of gothic mystery that occurs to Midnight and those around him. C.L. words draw your in and the characters development is well done. It’s a nail-biting page turner story that you don’t want to miss. I can’t wait for the next Midnight Gunn Adventure.
BTW I listened to the audiobook and the narrator does a fabulous job and keeps your interest with her voices of characters. Well done audiobook. Highly recommend it.

Another great installment

Very well written and edited. Story and plot flowed nicely. As per usual, adheres to the "Agatha Christie" standard of mysteries (no gore, course language, or gratuitous sex scenes) And even though I love the atmosphere of her self-described "Victorian Gothic Mysteries," it is the characters and their development that keep me turning the pages. So glad to have found this author

A fabulous continuation of in the Midnight Gunn Series.

This instalment takes place in Scotland where more mystery & magic follows Midnight Gunn, Penny & his household.

Once again the descriptive world building & mythical characters within the book are brilliant & personally I now want a Barghest!

This atmospheric Gothic mystery was well worth the wait after The Hollows. Set initially in Victorian London before moving to Edinburgh and the Scottish Highlands, the novel is rich in period detail and sense of place. Monaghan’s language beautifully evokes a bygone era, supported by meticulous research and a well-constructed mystery. Familiar characters are warmly revisited alongside engaging new additions, while fresh mythological elements add depth and intrigue. A thoroughly absorbing read, made even more special by reading a signed copy from the Library of James.

Good read

I enjoy reading about Victorian England, and the super natural. This combines both. Midnight Gunn's character is well thought out. There's even some humor, to go along with main characters

Midnight Gunn is an extraordinary man. His gift seem a burden to him but he opened his heart to his adopted daughter Polly and the rest of the gang. I love the dynamics between father and daughter. The story is brilliantly written and I can't wait for the next book

Even better the second time

The second installment in the Midnight Ginny series takes place 18 months after the first book and in Scotland. Intrigue, necromancy and large Fae dogs all take a turn in this fun second installment.

Whoa, I really liked this book. Why? Because I found it was scary as heck. The story moved along briskly and was quite well written. I am looking forward to the next book in the series, which I hope the author keeps going for a long time. Recommend without reservation if this is your genre.

Without a doubt, a very entertaining series to curl up to, at any time. Midnight Gunn is a character of fascination and intrigue. Young Miss Polly Peeps adds an element of frivolity and the remainder of the cast hit the mark as expected. This tale leads one down a path and offers surprises by its end. Not all is as it seems, but the read is truly a 'gotcha' kind of read and well worth the time spent.

I pre-ordered this, having read the first Midnight Gunn book and loved it. I was super excited to dive back into Midnight's world and see what was going on with him, and little Polly. The story was beautifully crafted, as I have come to expect from this author, and the plot kept me guessing through the twists and turns as more supernatural creatures popped up on the pages. I adored the characters, and loved the direction the story went. Overall, an amazing read and one that I highly recommend!

The Barghest by C.L. Monagham is the second Midnight Gunn novel and I found myself loving it even more than the first one!! This is one of the best detective stories that I've read in quite some time. The detail in the story is amazing, as well as the characters. I love the Sherlock Holmes vibe that the author mixed with the paranormal world!
I cannot wait and truly hope to read more Midnight Gunn adventures!!
The audio narration is absolutely fantastic & I highly recommend!!
