Spending one year in Canada myself, I got this book as a goodbye present from a friend. To be honest it was laying around quite a while, but then I read it within a couple days. The author has a wonderful way of telling stories and facts about this nation and I could find so many similarities to my hostfamily. Many things got confirmed, others were new and definitely interesting to know. Loved it!
That's what makes Canada so awesome - nice people, great music, and they share with the world, because, well, nice people.
This book is full of short tidbit trivia, quite interesting. I didn't think I retained it all, but did fairly well in the quiz at the end. An example of the writing:
"HALLOWEEN & FIREWORKS. Halloween is a big deal in Canada. One of the ways they celebrate is by setting off fireworks.
In Vancouver, Halloween is the only day of the year where people can legally set off fireworks in their backyards. Permits are obtained and Halloween in Vancouver is a spectacular sight."
With a French Canadian ancestry, I have made many trips to Canada over the years and spent a month in University there. But I learned many new fact about the country that I didn't know. This is an easy and informative read that I thoroughly enjoyed.
There are 24 chapters, as a Canadian loved the book. Some of the facts that intrigued me are: weather - Canada and Russia are among the coldest nations in the world, kind & smart - Canada during 9-11 housed more than 33,000 passengers from 224 planes, the beaver is the national animal of Canada, in 2008 Santa was declared a Canadian citizen, Canada is the second largest country in the world, Canadians invented hockey, Canadians invented peanut butter, the snowmobile and egg cartons. Halifax was the closest port to the Titanic tragedy and many victims were buried in Halifax. Famous Canadians include, Ryan Reynolds, William Shatner, and Celine Dion, Michael Buble, and Justin Bieber, Lucy Maud Montgomery and Margaret Attwood are famous authors as well as Stephen Leacock. Chapter 25 includes a quiz and the answers are included. As a proud Canadian the book the book details many accomplishments that Canadians can be proud off. Every Canadian should have a copy of this book.
To the 3 Canadian people I have known in my life, thank you for telling me relevant facts this book has repeated. Fun listen, ideal for anyone who likes facts, fun and Canada. Butter tarts, only question I answered doughnut holes to. Thank you Marianne Jennings for your words, much appreciated. :-)
This was free on the Amazon Kindle app & if you like geography and need something to wind down with then this is your book. Very informative, and put me nicely to sleep, but not without some cool information about Canada.
Since I was born in Montreal 1953, I did remember very well. When saw Famous Musicians. One is favourite The Guess Who. But I expect another one. That is Neil Young. He had great songs. “Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere” “Southern Man” “After the Gold Rush”.
It took me a while to get through. It wasn't a bad book, I just don't really like non-fiction. But for a book that's less than 200 pages and has lots of space in between, it dragged on.
In the first place the author would appear to be from Utah. In describing the world’s largest hockey stick three zeros were omitted from its weight in pounds. As a Canadian born and bred most of the facts were known to me though the fact that the Zamboni was invented in Califiornia seems rather strange. The book is currently free and be sure to download the pdf quiz.
Short, concise and fun book with interesting facts about Canada. Minus a great one from Robin Williams, the quotes section was somewhat lacking, but I learned a bunch I didn't know about a land I have roots in. Can't beat that!
