Long after what humanity considered to be the end of the world, their former pets have come to inhabit the ruins of once great cities, and life has adapted to this strange new reality. Dogs walk where men once stood, forging a new path toward an uncertain future. Packs wage war over scarce territory and limited resources, all while combating a hostile world where danger lurks around every corner. At the mercy of ancient magic and countless forces beyond them, these dogs must choose carefully if they wish to see the light of the next sunrise.
Amidst the chaos of a region that has not yet recovered from the devastating Three Packs War, an ordinary pup from outside the Spires stumbles into a brewing conflict that will again threaten the generations-old balance of power. He may yet hold the key to saving these dogs from utter destruction.
If you like warriors or survivors, I feel like this could be a mix of both. The warriors similarities I found the dogs are in different packs and can talk to spirits, and survivors similarities go off as being in an abandoned city. The book is based off of a character Step, who is a pup born outside of the spires (tall skyscrapers marking the city) which is abandoned and now fully run up by dogs. He decides to venture into the spires and meets the Solum dogs, as well as many other packs and even a spirit. I don’t want to spoil or anything more, but the book is in third person which kind of threw me off to a delay at reading the book when I first got it, but I pushed through and it’s really cool knowing what every dog is thinking, who the villains are and what different plot each dog has in store. I found my Favorite character to be River from the Acecorum pack, and Auburn from Solum stood out as well. You will have a good read through Step’s paws for most of the book, and with him only being a pup I think it’s cool how smart he is and there is SO much lore I tell you. Ethan Summers honestly did a great job writing this series and I’m so excited to read the next book! I really hope this book grows more popular like Warriors because it really does have the potential. Got any more questions or curiosities? Find out for yourself, trust me, it’s worth it!
A creative twist on the Post Apocalyptic Fantasy novel...
Step, a pup born outside the Packs decides to move to Spires out of curiosity, a land forbidden by his lost mother's words, and leave all that he has ever known before behind him, including his sibling. He has lost his mother, and his father's identity is unknown to him. He soon finds himself a home in Solem (a Pack) where he discovers that he has a gift that he is yet to uncover. But there is trouble brewing in the midst- starting with over-ambitious villains, insanity, and plague. A book full of twisted secrets, action, and suspense awaits...
WARNING: The following novels should be supervised if the reader is below thirteen. It is not so much this book, but the next that some graphic material presents. There is quite a bit of gore (blood, death, detailed pain) and description. However, the book is written in a phenomenal fashion and deserves to be read by many more alike.
I really enjoyed reading this book. My favourite part was when Falcon first talked with Step. My favourite character is Falcon. I also really liked reading Step’s encounter with Hope. This book was about a dog called Step who wanted to explore and a pack adopted him when he almost died from another dog’s attack. Then he lived with the pack, but he got lost and led a dog from another pack into his territory which caused war.

I’ll give the indie author credit where credit’s due; writing is not easy. That said, I struggled through a lot of redundant prose, fluff and flat characters before I DNF’d at chapter 11. This was a very uninspiring read.
