As an Air Force brat, Kit grew up all over the southern United States and spent countless hours on front porches, listening to stories and tall tales and the extraordinary goings-on south of the Mason Dixon line, some of which were the basis for her first mystery novel.Kit is a professional journalist and is the two-time, first-place winner of the Writers' League of Texas and Merritt awards. She is a member of the Texas Press Association, and is certified in Search & Rescue.Kit lives on Lake Travis just outside Austin, Texas, with her dog, Tahoe, who plays a significant role in the mystery series.
Cauley MacKinnon is the obituary writer for a local newspaper. She's better known as Obituary Babe, to her chagrin. She has a degree in journalism ... now if she were only able to use it!
when her friend, Scooter Barnes threatens suicide, she finds that his home is surrounded by local police, Swat team, even the FBI. She manages to sneak in and talks Scooter into putting down the gun and letting the authorities take over.
It's only days later that Scooter is found dead. Suicide ... or something nefarious? Seems like everyone ...police, FBI, a one-eared German, the Argentean mafia, and a Customs Agent ... want to know what Barnes talked to her about. They all seem to be under the impression that he had something they all wanted ... but what?
It's a fast and furious adventure looking for a killer. And where did the dog come from? The characters are terrific ... Cauley is smart, determined, inquisitive, and always seems to get into trouble. I really enjoy the humor in how they all relate to each other ... and is there a possible little bit of romance ahead of Cauley?
This is my second time around in reading this book. I had read it several years ago and in the re-reading, I found it just as entertaining. Looking forward to reading Book 2 ..again.
I enjoyed this book. I liked it being in Austin and poking fun at various stereotypes. I liked the little bit of romance. I liked when I found out I was wrong about certain people... and when I was right.
If you are looking for a light mystery that is more of a comical nature, this could definitely fit your needs. Cauley is a down-on-her-luck reporter that can't catch a break in life, love, or literature. Then things get worse when her childhood friend reaches out for help only to start mass chaos in Cauley life.
That should be enough to get you going. Enjoy. You and Cauley have some research to do.
This was a refreshing read and had me laughing out loud a few times. I had a hard time putting it down. The only think I did not like about it was that even after reading some of it over and over again, I cannot figure out Diego's connection. Not sure how he fit in the story or who he worked for.. ? At some point, there got to be so many characters involved I had to go back and read some over again to remember who they were. I plan on reading the next one. Maybe it won't be so confusing. Still enjoyable tho.
funny comedy/mystery...who is the good guy/bad guy... what is everyone after? Fun and nice twist at the end. loved the characters they made me laugh and smile and cringe! Interesting story line and lots of action getting us to the end...yay there is a second book!
3.5/4. Stephanie Plum Texas style. Fun, predictable fluff. I would give it a four but there were so many times I had to suspend my disbelief. But it was entertaining. Marlowe was definitely the star of the show.
Fun read. Since I'm from the Austin area, it was fun to try to figure out the places she references in the book. Kind of fluffy, but a nice light read.
great storyline, awesome read. would have been 5 stars if it wasn't for grammatical errors, such as missing words, missing commas and missing punctuation.
This was a great story of a reporter who innocently gets wrapped up in a whole lot of trouble. The Argentina Mafia, The FBI, a handsome Customs Agent, more than sparks fly when her house catches fire. The man with one ear is relentless! A great read!
It took a little bit of time to figure out who all the characters were, but once I did it was a good story. I felt like the author dropped too many big hints, so it wasn't a big mystery, but maybe it wasn't really meant to be.
