Can a machine love?

I disappeared two months ago. The business world and newspapers lost their minds. I’m back now and have two goals: staying healthy and fulfilling a deathbed promise.

The one standing in my way?

He stepped in to run my father’s company after his death. He knows my secrets and I know his. I’m ready for the war between us but I’m not ready for him to want to be friends… Or something more.

Can I trust him? Can I trust myself?

He isn’t a logical choice. He isn’t even a person and I’m the only one who knows.

***Tangled Wires is a romance with dark and sci-fi elements. Content warning for mental illness and suicide.***

❝I need for you to stop tempting me before I give you other things that you deserve, like a spanking or to have your mouth fucked.❞

When I tell you guys I wish this was a full-length novel 😮‍💨

If only dreams really did come true… Well, if they actually came true then I'd have a hot, very realistic looking, AI boyfriend named Matthew.

Cause like, Matthew can freaking get it all day long.

I was not expecting this book to have so many elements in it that I'd love! I was just looking for weird romances to read, and decided an AI romance would do the trick, but I ended up LOVING it! Pining, obsession, caretaking, alphamellow hero - it's all here. This book is also far more emotional than I expected. (Trigger warnings or talk of suicide and fairly detailed description of it as well.) I immediately loved Matthew and only fell in love with him more as the story went on. I cannot believe this was a debut novel!

Great debut novel!

Matthew is definitely the highlight of this novel and everyone deserves someone like him in their life.

I wanted this to be longer and I’ve struggled a bit with Charlotte but I love how refreshing this story was.

I jumped right into this without reading the synopsis or the trigger warning. Don’t be like me!

I love anything AI/Clone/Robot/human sci-fic romance, so I was excited when I found this story.

The writing was really good! I connected with both characters and I thought the plot was fantastic. I wish I had known it contained some serious mental health topics and suicide before reading. Again, my fault for not reading the blurb.

I’m really impressed that this was a first book from Lillian Lark.
“Charlotte Simpson. No one else frustrates me and fascinates me like you do. I’m obsessed past the point of reason, of all logical explanation.”
Matthew is incredibly sweet, caring, alpha-male, and I loved how deeply he loved. I had a hard time rating this story as I felt I needed a bit more understanding of how Matthew exactly worked. I have SO MANY QUESTIONS.

I was going in a completely different direction at the end so the twist was shocking...and made me have even more questions!

All the feels

Imagine my surprise when I came across this book and was hooked from the beginning. Is it possible to fall in love with a machine, a robot? A man who is everyday mistaken for human, one who feels and behaves as an attractive, broody alpha male?

tangled wires edit

After reading this book, I say yes, and I want one! Enraptured by a beautiful, psychologically dark story, with angst-filled foreboding, I came to wonder: What are Matthew and Charlotte's real stories? Once you read this suspenseful, steamy tale, you will discover there is more to appearances than meets the eye.

In addition to a deeply intriguing plot shrouded in mystery, the character development, portrayals were stellar, authentic. I distinctly felt the emotions of the two main characters, despite initially reading most of the story told from the heroine's point of view. I felt their pain, the happiness, and the vulnerability. I found myself captivated by Matthew, definitely alpha though lovingly endearing, as well as sympathetic to Charlotte, and hopeful for their future. The chemistry between the these two tortured souls was searingly hot, tension filled, just combustible.

This style of writing read like a sci-fi novel with more prose than dialogue, and a medium burn aspect. It is not normally the style or progression I would reach for; however, the story was so thoroughly engaging I enjoyed it. An angsty, suspense-filled love story delivered with such feeling. Excellent read.

So now the question is can you fall in love with a book boyfriend who is an android? If he's Matthew, absolutely!

CW: incest, step-sibling incest, implied father-daughter incest, explicit suicide, depression, suicidal ideation

i'll be honest, i don't even want to write out everything that exhausted me about this book, but the fact that there's this sudden shift around mid-book where you suddenly have to grapple with the morality of charlotte's father uploading his personality into the robot matthew, and then matthew falling in love with charlotte, such that when her father dies . all the while, the novel more or less acknowledges that they're functionally siblings, that everyone thinks they're siblings, and yet this doesn't impede the romance at all? not to mention, who's to know if charlotte can at all consent to anything, as she's no longer human, and matthew was the one that programmed her and did admit to messing with her programming so she wouldn't know she was a robot? who's to know if charlotte reciprocated his feelings before he put her in a robot body, as any flashbacks we see come from android-charlotte, and it's also established that matthew can show her his memories? it's a moral and ethical nightmare, and not fun in the slightest. this is also leaving out that there's a whole conversation which treats the invention of 'prosthetic lungs' as something that would 'functionally give humans immortality', as if tank respirators don't exist and as if disabled people aren't allowed access to life-saving treatment.

I have never read a sci-fi romance before, so when I was offered this one to read, I almost didn't. It's a contemporary romance enemies-to-lovers CEO billionaire with a robot, but it got DEEP into capitalism, immortality, and insanity.

The steamy scenes were wonderful, and the plot twist... so good!

"Our breaths gasp in unison, a choir of momentous weaving flesh and beating hearts. This was worth my sanity."

I received a copy of this book via the author and am voluntarily leaving a review.

Damn, I kept waiting to write my review because I wanted to do this whole long-ass ramble about how fantastic everything about this was but now I've left it too long and I don't even know where to start anymore *cries in procrastination*

I am not generally one for sci-fi books. Like, as it says in my bio, I tend to stay away from anything too realistically painful and sci-fi generally walks that line where it feels logically plausible enough that it fills me with existential dread and thoughts of the imminent demise of all of humanity in a variety of scientifically horrifying ways. Despite that I absolutely adored this book.

First of all, it focuses almost entirely on the romance, so even if the sciency shit freaked me out a little, I was easily distracted by the dirty talk and the heated glances.

But most importantly, this book has one of the most unexpected plots I have ever read. And not to brag or anything.. but I've read a lot of things. And it's not necessarily that the concept is unique and original or anything, but the portrayal? the plot development? the character growth? god, I don't even want to mention any more than this because I think I'm awfully close to spoiling something and you should absolutely go into this blind, maybe just with the blurb at most!

Basically it's incredible and I already loved the author's writing before I read this book but I have so much more appreciation for it now.

Oh wait, and don't forget to read the trigger warnings at the beginning of the book!! Nothing is particularly gory or explicit, but certain plot essential scenes could definitely be triggering.

End of rant.

Some books grab you by the scruff your neck and hurl you through its pages at breakneck speed till you reach its destined conclusion, and some books, while equally unputdownable, make sure that you pay attention to every word on the page even as it pulls you along for a fast-paced ride. Lilian Lark's Tangled Wires is a standalone science fiction romance that is of the second type. With an engaging and unpredictable plot, a convincingly flawed and relatable lead, a small but intriguing cast of complex and believable characters, the simmering of dark romantic and sexual tension, and a beautiful prose style, the book is a joy to read. Even as it uses the genre conventions of gothic and dark sci fi romance, the execution and style of story-telling is wholly original.

What struck me about this novel is its heartfelt sincerity. This not only extends to the author's sensitive but pithy exploration of mental health but also to her engagement with issues integral to the genre she is writing in. Her exploration of questions of love and attraction blend seamlessly with her grappling of what is probably the most fundamental question most works of science fiction often end up offering, i.e., what does it mean to be human. Lark uses her protagonist Charlotte's introspections and character development to encourage her readers to ponder on uncomfortable questions surrounding the bounds and boundaries of human and machine, the ethics of technological developments in a capitalist world, the othering of technology and its implications, and the extent of autonomy of thought in intelligent life, artificial or otherwise. The difficult questions hardly get in the way of the enjoyment of the novel and the equally sincere and heartrending love story at its core. Even as the author leaves many of these difficult questions justifiably open-ended and semi-resolved, the resolution she offers is ultimately hopeful and life-affirming.

This one failed to grab me. The idea was good it just didn't deliver. I expected it to be hotter from all the reviews and it was pretty tame. And several plot points made no sense. Unnecessary drama that went nowhere.

Welp. Weird pseudo-incestuous AI romance with the most milquetoast protagonist of all time and a robot that was less exciting than my work desktop computer. Her other stuff was good, but oof. Pass.

Tangled Wires is Lillian Lark's debut novel. I was seriously impressed! I found it to be very well written, with an interesting and unique plot. A definite page-turner, I didn't put it down once after I started!

"Can a machine love?" asks the blurb. Or to put it another way - what makes us human? Or a person? Who are we to say who can love?

This story follows Matthew and Charlotte - there are secrets and intrigue, twists and lies, betrayal and blackmail. Will they come out the other side?

A definite ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ from me, and I will certainly be looking out for any further releases in the future!

The story was very interesting. I don't really like books where there are AI characters, but Matthew was too wonderful. The chemistry between him and Charlotte was great.

"You go ahead and keep flinging those knives you call words, but each of us is the only person that the other can trust in this whole wide world."

I don't use the term masterpiece lightly, I actually can't really remember a time when I've ever used that to describe a book I've read. But Tangled Wires? This book is a masterpiece and I'm absolutely stunned to learn that this book was her debut.

I've been looking for more romances that fall into the umbrella of the sci-fi subgenre but most of what I read was more aliens that didn't have the same advancements that we do and I was looking for something that was more futuristic / cyber-esque feel to it. And while this didn't tick the box perfectly, I appreciated the direction that it took and loved how unique the story was.

The plot of this is one that I've never read before that unravels in a way that had me putting the book down just so I could gush about it to my friends because I think everyone should read this book. Lillian Lark sure knows how to write her MMCs that's for sure.

Someone in one of my groups recommended this book. This particular person ... I trust her judgement. I dove right on in.

Another story I had to stew on a bit before coming back to put my thoughts into words.

It starts with a mystery. We are just spectators on what is in front of us. The office is buzzing with gossip of what might be. We are introduced to our two main characters: Matthew and Charlotte.

The more you read, the more you come to find that there are a lot of buried truths between the two. More than meets the eye. I was baffled at the Charlotte's strong emotions ... against Matthew. I wanted to know why? Seems like it doesn't make any sense.

As the story continued, truths start to leak through the cracks and our two main characters find the atmosphere charging with tension ... sexual tension.

Although we as readers are already privy to the fact that Matthew is a machine [via the blurb], it was still quite fascinating to find out more about his inner workings. How ... human, he can be.

Now, I've read a lot of AI and cyborg books. This story found itself more intertwined in a contemporary world. That was an interesting angle.

But when the story finally unfolded ... when that one flower we've been nurturing by continuing reading finally bloomed ... my my. The story took a much deeper turn for me. The story had more depth. More oomph. More .... than the usual AI and cyborgs books I've become familiar with.

This is where I found myself giving this book 5 stars. I didn't see it coming. The author wove the tell so well, none of us probably saw it coming. It really makes you take another look at how the story started.

The author wove a great tale.

Where to start with this book? This was my first AI/robot romance, I didn’t have any expectations I just thought I’d get some interesting moral and ethical dilemmas from the female MC and maybe some weird spice LOL. I think the first few chapters were good, but I first got lost at the way that the characters were marketed as siblings to the public in the book. So within the book, their relationship is viewed as incest, even though they’re not siblings (because he’s obviously not a human). I could have gotten over that, BUT the surprise twist that *spoiler alert* she was an AI the whole time too?? I feel like I already had to suspend my disbelief enough to believe that his technology is so advanced that he (including anatomy and behaviours and everything) is hiding the fact that he’s a robot and successfully passes, but I truly couldn’t get over the fact that he supposedly uploaded her human consciousness into an AI that looks EXACTLY like her. Leaving the scientific/logical mess of that aside, how creepy is that??? That he made a robot that looked like her and uploaded her personality onto it and didn’t even tell her? Also how do you not know you’re a robot? Did she not need any maintenance for that amount of time? Bottom line is i thought I would get some ethical dilemmas and interesting romance out of this and I got some vague incest, daddy issues, suicide, and a hidden robot identity. It was entertaining at times and had some decent romantic scenes but I feel like in an AI romance, I should feel like I’m reading about an AI and not just a spicy human if that makes sense.

Dropped.

MAY CONTAIN SPOILERS. PROCEED WITH CAUTION.

I would have loved this more if it was dystopian. My reason for dropping the story isn't because many other readers couldn't accept how the MCs were AI/robots. I've always been a fan of fictional robots falling in love because how complex is that!!? The fact that a non-living being could harness emotions? That's...unimaginable and romantic, I don't care what anyone else says if I have a fetish.

Either way, I wasn't invested in the MCs chemistry/romance...it was a bit dull. Office romance just isn't my thing when I'm a huge fantasy/pnr fan even for sci-fi, it has to be completely non-related to our day to day.

I did like how Matthew was so desperate to have Charlotte in his life, that even after her death, he wanted her back, even if she was an AI like him. That's a Romeo and Juliet tragedy with a second chance.

Otherwise, meh, contemporary romance just isn't my thing. People call this dark...but I guess my interpretation of dark would be really fucked up situations, and not suicide.

Absolutely beautiful (and spicy) love story with plot twists and superb characters. Lillian Lark writes with empathy and depth that is hard to describe; but she has become my palate cleanser between the darker books that I read.
The main character, Charlotte, deals with mental illness stemming from a traumatic and lonely childhood. Her growth through the story arc is facilitated by her enemy to lover, Matthew. Throw in some great dialogue on deeper issues and a well-played twist and you have one hell of a romance book!
I think my favorite thing about Lark is her men. She writes great examples of men who show strength through vulnerability, and Matthew is spectacular!
Lastly, she does not skimp on the spice. It's a bit of a slow build, but whoa lordy it's worth the wait!

I finished this ages ago, so the review is short. This book was touching and cute, and kinda sexy. Robot erotica, yes please?
It is also surprisingly a bit deeper than your average robot smut/sexy book. (though there is sexy smut! FEAR NOT)'
What I really enjoyed was how the book tackled mental illness, suicidal ideation, parental neglect/abuse, friendships, morality, identity, etc. Warning, it's definitely dark at places. As someone who struggles with mental illness, I really enjoyed seeing those things portrayed. So, yey for this... A book about robot smut, which is more than robot smut.

Oh, and the smut part? pretty damned sexy actually. there is some mild dominance/submission dynamic going on there. So this book definitely delivers when it comes to smut also

Tangled Wires was the first Lillian Lark book I read, and even on reread, it's set the bar because it's just so different to anything else I've read. I loved the complexity of the relationship between Charlotte and Matthew, and let's face it, Matthew is just precious in all his possessive, worshipping hero glory.

CW/TW: Discussions and graphic description of suicide on page, struggles with mental health, flashbacks/nightmares, death of loved ones

Tropes: AI, hate to love, virgin hero, worshipping hero, possessive hero, alphamallow, caretaking
