An excellent and informative book on the issues of wellbeing in the workplace. Helpful and practical advice on how to ensure your workplace is caring for people and leading them in such a way that all flourish.
I stumbled upon Work Well Being as I follow the McCrindle insights on social media, and with my current wellbeing professional and personal goals was keen to learn from their research and perspectives. It brings some valuable perspectives, particularly on leadership.
I found Chapter 7 on Leading Teams in Changing Times the most insightful chapter. McCrindle's research on Australian employees and their expectations of their organisations and leaders helped crystallise for me the importance for both me personally as a leader, plus as a management consultant advising senior leaders about how to improve performance, that work wellbeing is critical. It reinforces many of the leadershifts I've just read in John Maxwell's Leadershift: The 11 Essential Changes Every Leader Must Embrace. The medium to long-term focus expected and preferred by employees aligns with from goals to growth; enlarging leaders reinforces concepts of from maintaining to creating, ladder climbing to ladder creating; and preference for collaborative leaders also reinforces shift from directing to connecting.
The introductory research and rationale for why work wellbeing must be the key issue for the future of work and driving performance and competitive advantage was persuasive and informative. However, I didn't find the middle chapters on pillars of wellbeing and how to foster wellbeing (organisational culture), and final chapters added anything to my existing understanding of the topic. I also expect that the 2020 research and references to COVID-19, whilst engaging for someone reading in 2020, may date the book quickly.
