Originally written as the ghastly war was being played out ... these two volumes concentrating on the causes and the first few months of the whole sorry affair.
Full of facts, wonderful illustrations from artists representing both sides and vivid photographs that bring everything to life 105 years later. For those like me who didn't realise it wasn't just the British and the French entrenched on one side of the battlefield and the Germans similarly on the other it's a bit of a eye opener really as you begin to understand the roles of airplanes and submarines for the first time, the continuing use of cavalry, the fact that the Germans were fighting on two fronts with the Russians in the East, Germany's annihilation of so many historic Belgian towns and cities out of pure spite.
A bumper read at over 900 A4 pages for these combined first two volumes and there are I believe 13 in total although it'll be a while until I get round to the next set. Definitely a marathon but I will return!!
