Melanie Weiss
6 books47 followersMelanie Weiss is author of two Young Adult novels, Crossing Lines and Spoken, which received a 2019 Readers' Favorite Book Award for Young Adult -Social Issues. In December 2020, she published the illustrated middle grade book, Oliver's Birthday and the Robin's Nest.
She is a graduate of the Medill School of Journalism at Northwestern University and worked as a journalist for newspapers and magazines for 20 years. She began writing her novel, Spoken, shortly after her younger child left for college in 2015 and she became an “empty nester.” She currently manages a scholarship foundation at her local high school that provides scholarship support to more than 60 graduating high school seniors each year.

A good read, with a different twist on the problem of school shootings.
On 2-14-18, teenagers all over the country watched the horrible news footage of the shooting at Margery Stoneman Douglas High School. For Alli, whose father was robbed at gunpoint and still suffers from anxiety, it is a wake-up call. She knows things must change and gun violence must be curtailed.
For Brandon, the son of two U.S. veterans who believe strongly in the importance of the Constitution and governmental adherence to the 2nd Amendment, it’s hard to listen quietly when people want more gun laws and reform. Especially difficult, because Alli is his girlfriend…
A very timely book to read, on an all-too familiar subject.
Red Flags: frequent f-bombs and other curse words; teens engaging in sex(though not graphically detailed.)

High school is a time when many students dive into the world of politics. Political tension among teenagers is common in the real world, but not a common central topic in books. I admire how Weiss recognized this problem and discussed two opposing perspectives on gun control through the novel Crossing Lines. Reading Alli and Brandon's opinions regarding gun control and how it affects their relationship with each other is truly impactful, which is why I believe this book is perfect for teenagers who often find themselves in political conflict with friends and family members. Such a brilliant and necessary story!

What line would you take and how would you respond if someone you care about has the polar opposite of your values?
This short book packs a lot of punch and will keep you turning the pages. High school seniors Alli and Brandon seem so right for each other, but then a school shooting puts them on opposite sides of the issue of gun control. Alli's dad was robbed at gunpoint and Brandon and his dad are avid hunters. His parents are also proud to have served in the U.S. Army and are pro NRA.
Weiss does an impressive job at addressing this polarizing issue. Can Alli and Brandon find common ground? You'll have to read CROSSING LINES to find out!

This book is very timely for the challenges that teenagers have faced in 2020. Their lives are literally upside down right now, and it weighs heavily on them. Shattered not only by the pandemic, but also by political strife, racism uprisings, and school going virtual without activities.

This book tackles the choice of taking a position on a difficult subject through the aftermath of a school shooting. Alli and Brandon are sweethearts whose relationship gets challenged by their political and moral beliefs on gun control and it’s implications. It was well-researched and smartly crafted, describing how teens explore their emotions in relationships and on important issues. This book was breezy and easy to read in just one sitting, but I will carry the story in my mind for some time. Thank you, Melanie!🌟🌟🌟🌟
This book is available now and I recommend you pick it up, especially if you have a young adult or a teenager in your life. You can definitely apply its learnings to today’s complicated and political world, and be a better guide as they explore their emotions.

Crossing Lines is an important YA book that teens should be reading and parents should be buying their kids to read.
Young people tend to have a pack mentality for the sake of fitting in and not being different. For the two main characters in this book, Alli and Brandon, both seniors in high school, are on opposing sides of gun safety, laws and control.
Brandon’s parents served in the military, so weapons have been part of his existence for most of his life. Most often, but not always, kids knowingly or unknowingly adopt the political views of their parents. After a school shooting, Alli, Brandon’s girlfriend, becomes more involved and vocal regarding gun control and safety. This becomes the main plot conflict of the story as their relationship is threatened. Can two people find enough commonalities and reasons to stay together when they are on opposing ends of such a hot-topic issue.
Through education and good communication, this story shows the power of listening and respecting each other’s point of view. If only the whole world could work through issues like this!

Melanie Weiss takes us into the world of high school seniors Alli and Brandon, who have grown close and developed a loving relationship when a tragic school shooting and its aftermath makes clear to them their very different belief systems. The way they approach the issues raised and the strain their beliefs put on their relationship provides a timely story. Their story provides an example of ways we can all listen and try to understand, be true to our values and work towards shared solutions.
This YA novel is good reading for teens and adults and the lessons it provides can be applied to many of our current social situations.

I was browsing through Instagram one evening , and noticed a friend’s post that drew my interest in this book. Naturally I reached out to the author Melanie, and I thank you for my complementary copy . Melanie, is a new author to me , and this , is the first book, from her that I read. What attracted me was honestly the pretty blue cover , the plot was unique, and it had decent reviews.
Synopsis: Midwestern high school seniors and swim teammates Alli and Brandon are the perfect couple, enjoying their final months of high school and making big plans for the future. When a horrific school shooting sparks a national movement, Alli gets involved with protests in support of gun control legislation, while Brandon defends his pro-gun beliefs and stays on the sidelines. These shifting priorities lead Alli and Brandon to question not only each other but their world views, as they begin to stand up for something bigger than themselves for the first time. (Ages 14+)
The narration was good , fast paced , easy to follow along. I loved the dual POVS I am a sucker, for multiple Point Of Views in a book. The narration flops back ,and forth ,between Brandon, and Alli in first person. I liked that it was fast pace to finish within a few hours. I liked that it does bring up an important issue that needs to be discussed. It’s a YA slashed Rom Com with Political views and events added into it which does make the book unique.
What I didn’t like : My friend and I were discussing the book , and I do see why she thought it wasn’t realistic, or authentic. There are indeed some phrases in the book I can point one out right now . In the first chapter Brandon says the word “ Botch “. I personally have NEVER heard of a teen saying that, or did I even say that word at that age . However , if the author meant for the couple to be more intellectual, and more mature then I can see why she added certain phrases , and reactions. But , for the most part teens would not , and do not say some stuff Alli , and Brandon have said throughout the novel. Or would they really know their political views at that age . ( I most certainly didn’t ) , Also reactions the way they reacted Isn’t really realistic either. But then again I’m not the author I am simply a reviewer.
Overall , I do recommend this book , but if you are not into politics, and some , of the drama that comes with it. You will probably want to skip it , but , if you’re looking , for a unique rom com then pick it up , and read it. You cannot decide , if you will like the book , or not based on other people’s reviews. The only way you will know , for sure , is if you pick it up yourself . Overall it was decent for a quick read !

It questions;
-the safety of kids in schools,
-the second amendment,
-banning guns and MUCH MORE.
📌The story is weaved around ALLI, who is best friends with SIMON. BRANDON PAULSON & Alli like each other.
They are 5 months away from High School Graduation.
The narration is from two point of views, interchangeably, Alli & Brandon.
The writing style is peppy & full of slangs, as would a normal school kid would use in his/ her talks & texts.
To accommodate any ignorance, a glossary is given right in the beginning of the book.
Eg: BFN- bye for now
There is a quick mention of Pawn Stars, which took me back memory lane when I used to watch that show.
The basic premise is;
High schl romance between Alli & Brandon and how this happening on feb. 14 causes a rift between them due to different political views.
Teenagers & their emotions are well depicted..confused & eager to react & form judgements.
Some believe, taking down rights of self defense, of gun ownership away from everyone because of the actions of one deranged person is not fair

We need to realise WE LIVE IN A BUBBLE WHICH CAN BURST ANYTIME.
The story ends with the Prom Night & a HEA.

Wow! Melanie Weiss, the author of “Crossing Lines” has written a unique, thought-provoking, intriguing and memorable novel. The genres for this book are Coming of Age, Fiction, Young Adult Fiction, and Romance. The timeline for this story is around 2018 and the setting is in a Midwest High School. The author describes her characters as complex, complicated, confused and motivated.
I appreciate that the author discusses controversial subjects. The author vividly describes the characters, setting, and problems in the story. Two senior students, Alli and Brandon attend the same high school and are both on the swim team. The two start to date, and at first fall into a comfortable relationship. Since it is the senior year, there is mention of them going to the prom together. The two want to be together this senior year before they head off to college.
Brandon’s family is a military family and believes strongly in the right to bear arms. Alli’s father was threatened by someone with a gun, who was robbing him and dislikes guns. These family differences influence how both Alli and Brandon react when there is a shooting at a school.
This becomes more involved than just a simple relationship, and both Alli and Brandon realize that they are compatible in many ways, yet they differ about certain beliefs and what they should fight for. They want their voices heard. Is there any chance for the two can work together?
I highly recommend this amazing book for readers who enjoy a thought-provoking story.

October 6, 2020Where do I even begin with this book? Maybe with the fact that it cover important but scary topics? Maybe the fact that it covers each side of the argument without diverging into a petty argument? Maybe by letting you know it’s a really short but amazing read? All of the above? Sure, let’s go with that! But yeah, this book starts a conversation about gun control and puts it into a digestible story for younger teen audiences.
So, the thing that made me most happy about this book is that we hear BOTH sides! I just love that these two main characters were able to each share their opinions, explain why they thought the way they do, and learn from one another. Now if only adults could act that way as well. And this would be a great book for high school students because it’s not extremely long but still packs a powerful punch.
School shootings are sadly becoming a synonymous thing with the U.S. I was actually shocked when I transferred to my current University and actually had an active shooter section in our orientation. And it was very interesting to me that their training us to not hide but to ambush the shooter. But anyways (as I go off on a tangent), I think this is a very important book. Especially with the society we live in.

Everything is going great in their new relationship until the Parkland school shooting happens, and they find themselves on very opposite sides regarding gun rights. Alli's father was held up at gunpoint in his store, and Brandon's parents are libertarians who support the NRA. Can these two find common ground, or will their beliefs divide them?

As a high-school English teacher, I always enjoy YA books, because I'm so familiar with the setting. When I read the synopsis for this book, I knew it was one I wanted to read. The Parkland school shooting was horrifying. My students at the time wrote letters that we sent to the school to show we were thinking of them. I run a service club at the high school, and we had the opportunity to attend the March For Our Lives national rally in Washington D.C. - it was an incredibly moving experience that I'm lucky to have shared with them. That being said, I can absolutely understand the upset main character Alli felt and her desire to get involved to make a change. I think it is so important for teenagers to understand what is going on in the world and to know that their voices matter. This would be a good book for teens to read to show them both sids of the gun rights/laws issue. I did find some of the dialogue to not be authentically "teen" - I found myself questioning, would a teenager say that or say it like that?, but that may just be because I'm around them so often. Despite that, this short book is an important one as it sheds light on issues that affect teens.

This is a must-read for teens and adults alike! As a country, we're all struggling to cope with and end school shootings, regardless of where we fall on the political spectrum. The story in this book takes place around the Marjory Stoneman Douglas school shooting, and we see a fictional account (but very much grounded in truth) of how teenagers deal in the aftermath.
Melanie Weiss' book shows teenagers how they can find their voice and be activists but also hits on other important points: how they can accept their peers, how it's possible to grieve and still enjoy life in the moment, and that they can overcome differences and bridge divides.
In this book, Alli and Brandon have serious conversations with each other, and also their friends and parents. We see a variety of viewpoints on gun control. Weiss does a good job with helping the reader understand why people feel the way they do (especially how the adults' opinions formed in the book).

Sometimes the opportunities to read a book are just an immediate YES, I need that one in my life, and that's how I felt about getting to read a copy of Crossing Lines by Melanie Weiss, thanks to today's book tour with Suzy Approved Book Tours 🚌
As a mom to a teenager and a toddler, this one was really important to me to read, and my teen plans on reading it as well. One of the things I love most about YA titles, is how they can really connect with readers in a way other genres maybe haven't, and when they're written like this one, can make a huge difference in their lives. By starting the conversation about things like politics and current issues in the world, titles like this one are giving them a chance to communicate these huge feelings they tend to have, and characters to connect with.
This book was a quick and easy read that packed a lot of punch into it's pages, and talked about some really important issues in today's world. What I loved most about these tough topics is that the book gave the characters resolution, and dialogue on how to respect each other's different opinions, and how to be okay with that - my teen, Caleb, often reads titles with me, especially the YA ones I receive, and he plans to read this one as well, follow along for our opinions with the hashtag #currenTEENlyreadingwithCaleb on bookstagram!

There used to be three things that were not mentioned in polite conversation: politics, religion and sex.
Now, all bets are off. We talk about everything. That can be uncomfortable and it can ruin relationships. It can also help bring about necessary change.
Alli and Brandon are both swimmers and seniors in high school. They start dating and realize that they have fundamental differences on gun control. Alli’s father’s store was robbed at gun point and it has really effected her father’s mental and emotional health; she does not like guns. Brandon’s parents are veterans of Desert Storm and believe that guns keep people safe and are staunch supporters of the Second Amendment. Alli and Brandon struggle with their differences and when their parents get involved, it gets worse.
But, eventually, after a serious situation, the parents and the kids all learn to talk about the issues and to accept each other’s differences.
This felt like an important book to show how to have dialogue about important issues while also staying true to your beliefs and being respectful of the other person’s beliefs.
In the end, Alli and Brandon made a speech that was a hybrid of both of their positions, which reflects a healthy, responsible reform that respects the Second Amendment.

When a school shooting happens and sparks a national movement, Alli and Brandon take a stance on their position on gun control...and they end up on opposite sides. Both of them must decide where the line is drawn.
I am always a fan of smart YA fiction. Weiss delivers a well-rounded novel about how teenagers process their emotions then begin to decide their political stance on their own terms. Alli and Brandon were wonderful characters to follow and I enjoyed seeing how their relationship developed beyond the typical YA tropes. This "romance" really spoke to how teenagers today are growing up in turbulent times. The topics brought up were researched and accurate. This novel is an important on to gift to young people as they search for their own answers for events that have happened in recent years.

This was an amazing book a quick read but it makes you stop and think. Ali and Brandon are high school seniors they both are swimmers in a small Midwest town . They appear to have the perfect relationship, that is until the Parkland school shooting and soon they find themselves at odds over gun rights. When Allis father is held at gunpoint at his store and is robbed, Alli sees the toll the robbery takes on his mental health, when Brandon’s parents are libertarians who are veterans of the Desert Storm who support the NRA, they believe guns keep people safe. Struggling with their differences Ali and Brandons relationship becomes more difficult and when their parents get involved it makes it even worse for them. Soon Alli and Brandon begin to question everything they thought they knew about the world and each other. The book was easy to follow and it’s told in multiple point of view. I believe it brings forward an important issue that everyone needs to talk about four stars!

This is such an important read about high school students Ali and Brandon! They are seniors and are a perfect couple! But after a school shooting, their relationship is out to the test. They are on opposite sides of the gun control issue. Ali's dad was robbed at gunpoint, and Brandon and his dad are hunters, and his parents served in the US Army! Ali takes to protesting for gun control, while Brandon stays on the sidelines and defends his pro-gun beliefs!!
Such a timely book and I feel like this should be read by all high school students. This was a very short read at only 164 pages! Especially now, I found it so important because there are people who are opposite in your beliefs, and I found how they worked through it to be very realistic!! I think adults and young readers will both enjoy this book!!

Senior year. Relationships. Swim team. College plans. Politics. Finding yourself. Sound like a book you’d enjoy?
My favorite YA books take on serious topics in a lighter way. Weiss did an excellent job of balancing the weight of existing as a high school senior during the time of school shootings with the light feeling of first love. This book was complicated and honest, the characters easily could have existed at any high school right now.
As the parent to high schoolers, I feel this is a great story for both teens and parents. I’m looking forward to passing this one on to my kids and all the other teens in my life.

This YA book looks at two teens trying to navigate their family’s values being on different sides of the gun reform debate and how to not let it come between them.
It’s a great look at coming-of-age and what that means around your relationship to tot he values that your parents have tried to share and instill with you - and what it looks like to consider things for yourself.
There is some romance, some family drama and general teen plot lines - looking forward to my teens reading this one and us discussing it.

The story is set in Midwest around 2018. Alli and Brandon are planning their future as they get closer to the final days of high school. They seem so right for each other until a tragic school shooting happens and they realize they have different opinions on gun rights. Brandon’s family served in the U.S. Army and support the right to bear arms, Alli’s father was robbed at gunpoint. Will their perfect relationship survive after this?
I enjoyed the storyline and dual POV throughout the book. The story brings on an especially important topic and I believe the author did a remarkable job addressing this issue. The characters are developed, and easy to connect with. I loved how the story shows characters with different opinions and how they can have a respectful conversation with each other, respect each other’s opinion and stay true to their beliefs

This is a story about a perfect couple Alli and Brandon who are about to graduate but instead of enjoying this moment and planning their bright future they have a driving opinion about an incident that changed their life forever and also has created questions about their relationship in future. While Allli protests in support of gun control legislation to curb gun violence and Brandon defends his pro-gun support of 2nd amendmant rights and the right to bear arms for self-defense, instead of gearing up with their romance before they graduate they somehow do not connect well with each other.
This story is totally different from your typical high school drama and romance. It's unique story and have really good messages for teenagers as it’s quite true to reality. School and college days are the best times of everyone's life but we know how much politics is involved and this story presented that issue. I am very much impressed with the storyline. Enjoyed this book till the end, it's an interesting take on two people who are in love. This also taught us, how to deal with people having different opinions.
Overall, it's a really good and compelling read and all the characters are well developed but I admire Alli's character the most for so many reasons that you will know once you read the whole story, so what are you waiting for?

High School is fun, angry, sad and loveable, but above all, its political. Its easy for high school students to get involved in politics because they are finally looking at the world from their point of view.
Crossing Lines is a short package which delivers a large volume of content that is both impressive and engaging at the same time.
The story is of Brandon and Alli, a perfect couple enjoying the last months of their high school and making plans for the future.
Just when everything is going well, a school shooting incident sparks a National movement. Brandon and Alli find out that they have different views in regard to what happened. Alli supports the Gun Control Legislation while Brandon defends his Pro-gun beliefs. The couple that stood together now stand against each other. These shifting priorities raise a question on their relationship because they finally stand for something bigger than themselves.
Melanie Weiss has done an incredible job at creating a storyline around a topic that was much needed for the teenagers who are constantly at war with their friends on political discussions.

I am sure we are all familiar with this kind of situation these days. I know I for one have family and friends that disagree with me politically, which has made for some very tense conversations. This book is a great look at how to continue to love someone with differing opinions. At how to have a conversation with those you don’t agree with, which these days seems practically impossible sometimes. I felt like Alli and Brandons relationship moved a little bit too quick, but other than that I thought this book was great. I think it’s an important lesson in listening to others and being open to learning something different than the beliefs you were raised with.

The cover of this book is really impressive and can easily attract readers. Also, It is made perfectly according to the story of this book. The title is also chosen aptly for the story.
The main charecters of this story are Branden and Alli who are a lovely and happy couple enjoying last few months of their high school and planning things for the future. Everything was going perfectly in their life but suddenly difference of opinion on a national movement made them stand against each other. To know what happens next, you have to read the book.

“Crossing Lines” is a book with a big heart and a timely reminder about what it means to practice tolerance and understanding. High school seniors Alli and Brandon are each dealing with the usual pressures, ranging from Alli’s struggle to maintain her standing on the swim team to Brandon sweating over his admission to college. It’s great fun following the ups and down of their budding romance. Weiss gives us both protagonists’ perspectives throughout the book—and that’s important, given the way this story unfolds. The novel takes an increasingly serious turn as Alli and Brandon discover they hold divergent political views, especially on gun control. We deeply feel their struggle to listen to and understand one another, and the book ends on a satisfyingly hopeful note that there is room for compromise and ways to find common ground. Highly recommended.
