A Second Chance In The Show Me State by Jessie Gussman (5 stars)
A ‘Parent Trap’-esque story and charming in its characterizations!
The twin boys are opposites in personality: one is hyper and acts before he thinks. The other is a more deliberate, calm kid. As is always the case, the kids in Ms. Gussman’s stories act like the age they are meant to be. And their dialogues also sound authentic. (In keeping with her rather perfect comedic timing, we switch to one of the kid’s POV near the end of the book and the kid is just so hyper and so naive and so clueless that it is downright funny!)
You kind of want to sit Reid and Emerson down and force them to talk! They both still love one another and yet pride has reared it’s ugly head and neither wants to make himself/herself vulnerable to hurting worse than he/she already does. It’s a study in marriage relations and how trust, humility and communication are so vital!
*spoiler alert* The couple, in a true Parent Trap-esque moment are finally ‘trapped’ together and are forced into talking. At that point, all the impatience the reader may have felt leading to this moment is rewarded with the sweetest and funniest and most realistic, yet romantic dialogue that it’s totally worth the wait! (The moment in the story where Reid says, “Instalove.” I burst out laughing. You’ll know it when you get there.)
Jessie Gussman excels at dialogues that are goofy, funny, insightful and romantic all at the same time and this book is just a delightful read!

This latest story in the Show Me State/Cowboy Crossing series, belongs to Reid Hudson.
Reid and his wife, Emerson, once were best friends and very much in love. But eight years ago, disagreements and stubborness caused them to separate. She went to Switzerland to work for her Dad, taking with her one of the twins. Twins that though they spend 6 months a year with each parent, have not spent time together.
After a request from Reid to spend a month at the ranch, Emerson returns home.
Even in the same home, these two seem unable to express their feelings, even though the love never died.
What happens when the boys play a trick on them, forcing them to spend time together? Will that be the last straw or will they finally open their hearts?
While the story was entertaining, it was also a reminder that a marriage requires effort, dedication, willingness, forgiveness and each person giving 100% knowing that compromises will be made. But also that loving someone and finding someone that “gets you” is a gift to be treasured.

The lack of courage of their convictions
This book reminds me of why I could never make it as a marriage counselor - the protagonists were both so frustrating that you just want to knock their heads together - or lock them up in a room somewhere until they finally work things out, lol 😉
I was interested in the Parent Trap vibe, and normally I can accept an unlikely premise & just go with it if I'm enjoying the story, but frankly, the two of them stubbornly & pridefully refusing to work things out & making the kids pay for it by separating them for 8 years was hard to accept. I had to make a major, conscious effort to let it go.
Thankfully, the twins feel the same way & take some drastic action, with a little help from the extended family.
Not my favorite in this otherwise enjoyable series, but I love Jessie Gussman's willingness to try out different things & unusual plot devices, which for her work much more often than not!
*Clean romance level: passionate kisses, intimations of intimacies between married couples, but nothing salacious or graphic
*Religion: overtly Christian, nothing heavy-handed

A Second Chance In The Show Me State is a story of how Reid and Emerson refused to work together to save their marriage when their twin boys, Dallas and Houston were born and spent weeks in the NICU and had a tremendously large medical bill to pay. So instead of working together on the farm to pay it off in time, her father had made some big bucks and was going to pay it off which made Reid feel like they should work to pay them off. Her father wanted her to move with him to Switzerland to help run his company taking one twin with her and leaving one twin with Reid. Every 6 months they switched the boys, thus the twins were not being able to grow up together and they decided they wanted to live all the time on the farm and have a Mom and Dad all the time. They work on different schemes until they get Emerson back to Cowboy Crossing after over 8 years in Switzerland. Then the twins pull out all the stops and lock their parents in a shed overnight and ask them to talk to each other and told them they would stay in there till they decided they wanted to all live as a family again. A cute take off on the Parent Trap movie.

As a young couple with a very large medical bill from the birth of the twins they are both stubborn, and she leaves with one twin. For eight years they have been switching twins every six months, until a fuel shortage makes getting flights difficult and Reid doesn't her a seat for Dallas on the right day. Both twins are excited that they get to spend three days together and they make a plan...
They want to stop living apart, never seeing one another and get their mom back to Missouri and together with their dad again. This book is heavy with raw emotion. Reid and Emerson have been living separate lives across the globe, even though they are married with twin boys. Though they’ve lived apart for eight years, neither one of them has suggested a divorce.
Unlike previous books by Gussman, there is quite a bit of petty sniping between the H and h. Being that these characters were selfish enough to split twin brothers and raise them apart, such behavior is in keeping with what you would expect from the characters.
However, this dropped my enjoyment of the book to a four. Honestly, the second chance trope isn’t my favorite, anyway.
This is a twin boys version of The Parent Trap. I really enjoyed the perspective of the boys. It has a sweet ending.

A Second Chance in the Show Me State is the most recent book in the Cowboy Crossings series and it's very good. I will confess that I had some apprehension about this book (yes, I know it's not real), because it bothered me that the parents had kept the twins separated from each other. Why Reid and Emerson had not talked or worked out better arrangements for their boys was beyond my understanding. I should have had more faith in Jessie Gussman. The twins are delightful kids who have a clear understanding of what needs to happen, and with some help from caring adults, they take action. Reid and Emerson had to grow past the hurt and pride they had been holding onto, which wasn't easy. As always, the supporting characters enrich and provide depth to the story. I loved the book and can't wait to see what Jessie Gussman has in store next for this series.

My thoughts on this book:
• I really enjoyed the witty banter that Reid carried on in his head with himself. I liked this insight into his character.
• The twins, Dallas and Houston, added a great 'cute' factor to the story.
• Both Emerson and Reid were very determined to not be the first one to give in and offer forgiveness to the other. It took quite a bit of the book to get them to be able to converse without offending each other. They both were very immature. I usually do not like books with immature characters, but I did like this one. The last half of this story makes up for the first part.
I was given a free copy of this book by the author. My review was voluntary and my opinions were my own. If you enjoy small town country romances you'll enjoy this one. I can't wait to read the next book by this author.

We get a bunch of tropes all wrapped up in one with Jessie’s newest book. Reid and Emerson started out as friends that led them to become high school sweethearts and get married, but both had made mistakes to cause a divorce that neither had really wanted. I loved seeing their kids point of views as well and both Emerson’s and Reid’s. It makes for a more well rounded and better understanding story. I love Jessie’s writing style, it’s very easy to read and get invested into her characters. I loved that this book was like the movie Parent Trap but with twist. I really liked it and would recommend.

This was a cute story. I have really enjoyed reading this series by Jessie Gussman. I love how in each book we see one of the brothers find love again. I loved how in this one the couple was still married just estranged from each other. I loved the “Parent Trap” type antics of the kids. I loved how Reid and Emerson always loved each other but they both needed to learn how to communicate with each other about how they felt. I loved that they were able to work everything out and know now how to work out problems in the future. I really liked these characters and I think this story was very believable.

This is such a fun series with beautiful covers! I liked this second chance story with Reid and Emerson, who live an ocean apart and share one twin each for six months before they switch and get the other twin. I also liked that even though Reid and Emerson had been apart for eight years they still love each other and had never removed their rings or dated other people. Too bad their pride got in their way and they had wasted those years, although time has helped each of them to grow up after having the twins and a lot of debt. I also liked how this story reminded me of one of my favorite movies, The Parent Trap. I received an advance copy of this sweet story and I willingly chose to write an honest review.

What can I say this is a book by Jessie Gussman. If you know who that is then you’ve already read the book. If you don’t then what a treat for you. Jessie Gussman is one of the best sweet and clean contemporary romance writers ever and I say that because until recently she was the only contemporary romance writer whose books I’ve read. A second chance in the show me state is from her new Siri‘s cowboy crossing. This is an author who knows how to build up kinetic energy from just using words on a page. She will have your heart palpitating from laughter and anticipation and before you know it the book is over and you’re waiting for the next one. I highly recommend this book do you self a favor and read it you won’t be disappointed I promise.

Outsmarted by a pair of eight-year-olds?
So many stories are built solely on physical attraction. That alone isn't enough to allow a relationship to survive when real life happens. This unique plot brings depth to the story as we see Reid & Emerson as real people. People who aren't perfect but their love for their children is readily seen. They are living breathing people, not flat words pressed into a book. They each have different personalities along with different strengths & weaknesses. Too many times they failed to recognize this as a good thing and allowed their insecurities and pride to push them apart. Will they be strong enough to actually live their Christianity as a lifestyle?
I requested an ARC of this title and I'm willingly sharing my opinion of it.

This is the story of Reid and Emerson who, although married, have been separated for over 8 years. Though they have twin sons, I loathed their solution regarding custody: each parent has 1 son for six months and then they swap sons for the next six months. I actually had friends that split their children in this manner and the children were the losers. I can't help but believe that if the parents were so concerned with the children's best interest, they would not have separated the twins in this manner.
The book is well-written and the boys were so cute! While I liked Reid and Emerson, I wasn't enamored with their life choices. Each held on to pride and stubbornness, preventing a reconciliation. However, when the twins take charge, there plans make way for an HEA ending.

A Second Chance in the Show Me State is the sixth book in the Cowboy Crossing series by Jessie Gussman. Reid and Emerson Hudson had twin boys. The cost of having them in the Neonatal ward was extremely expensive. The fight they had over how to pay the expense ended with Emerson going to work for her father in Switzerland. Reid and Emerson agree to have one twin for six months at a time. This works until the boys are eight and decide they want to stay together. For readers who have watched the movie, “A Parent Trap” can only imagine what the twins come up with to get their parents together. Read the book to see if your imagination is as good as the twins is in creativity.

Reid’s twin sons are not happy being separated from each other. So they find a way to force their parents to communicate…
Even though I really don’t understand how such huge misunderstandings can take place within a marriage, the plot was written in a very compelling way. The twins are ingenious and so loving, I would have felt proud to be their parent ☺! I liked that even though they realized their mistakes, Reid did not change so drastically that his character was not relatable. He still fought with the same issues but was finally willing to work on them in a constructive way. Enjoy this story as a couple apparently needs their children’s help to finally let go of their pride and asks for forgiveness.

What a delightful read! Fun jumps off the pages in this wonderful romp with Reid and Emerson and their precious twins, Dallas and Houston! What could possibly happen when this pair of twins decide that their parents need to spend some time together and do some serious talking? How can these twins that are always split up, going from one parent to another every six months, conceive and carry out such a devious plan? Enjoy this delightful story and get locked in for a couple of hours with Jessie Gussman's newest characters in this fun-filled book.

Reid and his wife have been separated for 8 years while she lives in Switzerland, working with her father and he is home on his farm. They split time with their twin sons, each taking a 6 month turn. But this leaves the boys apart from each other. The kids get to see each other when difficulty planning the exchange has them together for 3 days.
The kids make a plan, kind of like the movie, The Parent Trap. They decide to get their mother to come to the farm so that the parents can talk and fall in love again. They come up with a clever plan to get the parents together, aided by an uncle.
This is a cute story, and fun to read. It can be read by anyone.

I always find Jessie’s stories to be clean, enjoyable and fun! Reid and Emerson were best friends for a long time and married after college. The birth of their twin sons created financial hardship and when Reid refused the help of Emerson’s father, she left for Switzerland and took one twin with her. The twins changed what parent they were with every 6 months. Once they were together for 3 days and they hatched a plan to be able to stay together. A cute story! I am anxiously waiting to see what she comes up with next!

I remember my first year of marriage and the difficult lessons of learning to lay aside my pride and accept ownership of my mistakes--even if I was only 20% wrong. Ha! Pride can be such a powerful and destructive force and in this book it has kept a couple and their twin boys apart for 8 years. I loved the story of their reconciliation. It had the reality of hurt feelings, humor, and even just a tiny touch of spice that the author handles tastefully and appropriately for a clean, sweet romance. As with all of the books in this series, I loved it! Highly recommend! I was entrusted with a copy of this book by the author and this is my voluntary and honest review.

This went on for eight years and then the boys decided that they wanted to live with their father inMissouri and not in /Switzerland at all. Reid's family thought the same thing. So plans were made and the parents were locked in a shed by themselves to make up,so the boys hoped they would. This was a great book on family and love. This is my review and mine alone. This is another wonderful book by Jessie. I happen to have twin step-sons and can see them doing some of the things that the boys in this story do. I am enjoying this series. I got my copy of this book about 9 o'clock in Sunday evening and read until I couldn't stay awake and then finished the next morning as soon as I could. Jessie weaves a story that draws you in and keeps you reading to the end. I received an Advanced Reader Copy of this book with no obligation to leave a review. Check this one out for yourself.

The twins' determination was endearing and the storyline was heartwarming. I received an advance copy but my review is honest and voluntary. I finished the book in one day and enjoyed every minute.

Eight-year-olds can be very crafty.
I love Jessie’s books they are always such a good read. I loved this one. I felt for the twins but these parents did not stand a chance against them eight-year-olds can be very crafty. One reviewer was right this was just like Parent Trap and I adored that movie. This book was so good, loved all the characters and it was beautifully written. I highly recommend this cutie I know you will love it. I did receive a free copy of this book and voluntarily chose to review it.

Take this young family, Reid and Emerson. After growing together and marriage, and twin boys,
their lives just did not work out. Reid lived on a farm and worked very hard, Emerson moved to
Europe with one son and worked for her father. A Parent Trap type of visitation and the boys
don't really know one another. Brings a smile to your face at some of their antics. Enjoy this
read as you can almost imagine it happens.

Another winner in the Cowboy Crossings series. This is Reid's and Emerson's HEA, but I really think it's their twin boys' story. There's a "Parent Trap" connection but instead of twin girls, the twin boys are PERFECT! One is calm and quiet, and the other is busy and impulsive (made me think of Tigger!). I love how the author portrayed their silent communication/twin-speak -- it's a real thing! And the boys plot the perfect plan to get their parents back together. A sweet, clean story with lots of emotion, adorable kids and a HEA -- a wonderful read.

Reid and Emerson were high school sweethearts who married and had twin sons. Sounds like the perfect life but actually was anything but perfect. Pride goeth before the fall - in this case the fall was huge. Wife living in Switzerland, husband living in Missouri, boys separated and flying back and forth every six months. After an error on Reid's part the boys are together for 3 days and begin plotting to get their parents together. Will Dallas and Houston succeed or are they destined to never be together and the parents to stay far apart?

I just love this series, these brother sure knows how to get themselves into tricky situations. Good thing for family.
In this case we have soulmates who separated 8 years ago and who share 10 hear old twins. What these star crossed lovers failed to realise was that keeping their sons apart only made them more determined to be together and they will not stop until they get what they want. Their parents back together.
What ensues is a fun and mad cap adventure. Which was a delight to read

This was another fun read from Jessie Gussman. It is heartbreaking how the parents let their stubbornness and selfishness keep their children apart. Seems like Reid and Emerson just didn't try hard enough to make their marriage work. While they didn't divorce, they spent years separated and just shuffled the boys back and forth. However, I loved the scheming mind of of the boys who were tired of being separated from each other. They had a plan and with a little help, they were determined to see it thru. A must read!
