About the author

Vsevolod Garshin (Russian: Всеволод Михайлович Гаршин) is considered one of Russia's masters of short fiction. The son of a wealthy army officer, he served in the last of the Russo-Turkish Wars (1877 to 1878) and wrote his first story, "Four Days" (1877), while recovering from battle wounds. His subsequent stories, which were praised by Ivan Turgenev and Anton Chekhov, often dealt with the subject of evil. Garshin suffered from recurring bouts of mental illness and his masterpiece, "The Scarlet Flower" (1883), was based on his confinement in an asylum. He committed suicide at 33. His collected works were translated into English as The Signal and Other Stories (1912).

বইগুলো কেন এমন হয়! প্রায় পারফেক্ট হতে গিয়ে এমন একটা ছ্যাড়াব্যাড়া সমস্যা বাঁধিয়ে বসে যে কি বলবো! কেন বা ব্যাঙের মিথ্যা বলতে হবে। কেনই বা আমার মনে হতে হবে বাচ্চাদের বইতে মিথ্যা বলে এমন একটা চরিত্র ভিলেন হিসেবে ঢুকিয়ে দেয়া গেলেও কেন্দ্রীয় চরিত্র করাটা মস্ত বড় অন্যায় কাজ! :(

عظيمة هي الأقلام الروسية...
حتى في حكايات الأطفال وقصص الحيوانات، يخرج الكتّاب الروس بحِكم تمسّ جوهر الإنسان.
"الضفدعة السائحة" تبدو للوهلة الأولى قصة بسيطة، ولكن خلف هذا السرد الطفولي تختبئ دروس لاذعة للحياة.

من هذه القصة نتعلم:

إياك والغرور.
فقد تبني خطتك ببراعة، وتقترب من تحقيق حلمك، لكن لحظة غرور واحدة قد تُسقطك من أعلى، وتحول النجاح إلى ذكرى، والجهد إلى قصة يسخر منها الآخرون.

احذر أن تهتم كثيرًا بما يقوله الناس.
الضفدعة وصلت إلى منتصف السماء بخطتها الذكية، وكل شيء كان يسير على ما يرام، لكن عندما سمعت همسات الناس ولم تعجبها، انحرفت، وانشغلت بهم عن هدفها، أرادت أن تصرخ: "أنا صاحبة الفكرة!"
وفور أن فتحت فمها لتُعلن نجاحها... سقطت، وخسرت كل شيء.

ركز على الهدف، ولا تنشغل بالإعجاب أو التصفيق.
لا تجعل رغبتك في الاعتراف أو الظهور تسبق اكتمال رحلتك.

ولا تنكر فضل من ساعدك.
الضفدعة لم تكن لتحلق لولا الطائرين، لكن الغرور يجعلنا ننسى من وقفوا إلى جانبنا.


قصة صغيرة... ولكنها تضع مرآة كبيرة أمام النفس.

The Frog Went Travelling by Vsevolod Grashin, Illustrator Nikita Charushin, Russian to English translation Olga Shartse, English to Hindi language translation by Yogendra Nagpal- Children’s Illustrated Colour Picture Book- The book narrates the story of a Frog who lived in dirt pond and eats flies, insects, mosquitoes. One day while the frog has come out of the pond and hid behind a shrub, he hears sound of birds flying in the sky. Frog views that ducks are flying in semi-circle. Soon the group of ducks lands near him. They are a group of ducks. They are quacking “It is cold here! Let us go South!” They repeatedly quack. Frog enquires ‘What is so good about South”. Ducks reply that “Weather is warm. Lot of swamps, insects, flies, mosquitoes.” Frog requests them to give him an opportunity to think about his joining them to south. Frog goes down the pond to think. He plans that he must go alone and feast on mosquitoes, flies and insects. He comes upon a plan. The ducks should break a strong twig from a tree, hang him on the twig and carry him with him to South. Two ducks catch the twig on either side while the frog hangs on the twig. Group of ducks agrees the frog. Frog tells the group that while carrying him, they should not quack. Similarly, the frog will also not open his mouth and shout. Thus frog will not fall down and die. First, the ducks fly high and rest in the evening. Thus, they reach the warm area which is about 3000 miles away. Frog finds that farmers are taking out the grain from the thrash. He requests the ducks to fly low. Village farmers were talking “What an idea. Two ducks are carrying a frog on a stem.” “Who has thought about this brilliant idea?” On hearing these words, the frog is unable to keep quiet. He shouts “Me” and opens his mouth. Frog falls and finds himself in a swamp. He is not hurt. He is alive. Soon other frogs come out of the swamp. Now, the frog narrates his story of travel on the beaks of two ducks and that he owns ducks. I have read the Hindi language translation of this book. Coloured illustrations and pictures help the reader to relate to the story.

ষোল পৃষ্ঠার ছোট্ট বই, ছোট্ট কাহিনি, অথচ কী গভীর শিক্ষা। ছোটবেলায় এই গল্পটারই সংক্ষিপ্ত রূপ শুনেছিলাম কারো মুখে। অকারণ বড়াই করা, বা মিথ্যে বলার পরিনতি যে কখনও ভালো হয় না, সে শিক্ষা দেয়ার জন্য এমন চমৎকার গল্পের জুড়ি নেই।

পাতায় পাতায় ইলাস্ট্রেশন গুলো মনোমুগ্ধকর!
