Better than the actual New X-Men series. The teenage soap opera-y stuff is replaced by your typical superhero story where a guy named the Kingmaker makes deals with the Hellions in exchange for favors. I'd take this anyday over winey teenage melodrama. Clayton Henry's art is better than any of the subpar artists they've had on the main book.

enjoyable but predictable

Christina Eric's writing with the Hellions is consistent with the New X-men but it's filled with very predictable beats and turns. Also the Hellions made a lot more sense in their origins in the New Mutants but as the rogue team of X-men, they aren't quite as compelling. Enjoyable but predictable.

A lightweight but readable Hellions story. Pretty good actually, but in the end it was still a Hellions story. And it helps to care about at least some of the characters. I know there is life in at least a few of these characters elsewhere. But here I really didn't care about them much. And Frost is the behind-the-scenes hero. 3.5 of 5.

Spin-off mini-series that feels very paint by the numbers. The lead character is unlikable, and many of the supporting characters are simply plot devices. Pretty much generic and disposable.

The Hellions get their own limited series straight from the pages of the New X-Men. The tight-knit squad ends the school year as a dominant team in the school's Field Day exercises earning them the trophy, but they may have alienated much of their fellow students in the process. The boastful and boisterous leader, Julian Keller (Hellion) invites his team to his family home in California to spend the summer together. Sooraya Qadir (Dust), Cessily Kincaid (Mercury V), Santo Vaccarro (Rockslide), Brian Cruz (Tag), and Kevin Ford (Wither) agree, but the vacation is off to a rocky start when Julian's parents express their frustration with him and his antics. Embarrassed, Julian looks for any family secrets he could use. He finds the number of the Kingmaker who offers each of them the opportunity to live the life that they really want.

Nunzio DeFilippis & Christina Weir share an interesting story that focuses on the New Mutants' biggest rivals. The Hellions often find themselves at odds with their peers and teachers, and they have a tendency to get into trouble and often stir the pot. They are confrontational and adversarial, but they are also teenagers still trying to find their place in the world. In selecting their ideal lives, we get a glimpse of the traumas, heartbreaks, insecurities, and dreams that shaped them, and we watch them struggle to define their real role: heroes or villains?

What a fun little story. Reading the past 3 volumes did help with being invested in these characters. And you know what, it paid off with a fun little side quest during summer break for the students at the Xavier Institute for Higher Learning.

Now… I’ve spent 4 books with these characters, specifically the New Mutants and the Hellions. There will be much more weight going into M day than before. Looking forward to it slash not looking forward to it.

A totally solid collection considering the whole genie/deal-with-the-devil theme. Enjoyable enough, but nothing particularly fantastic. I don't really have any complaints but I don't really have any praises either.

A buon rendere, insomma!

A team of young X-Men travel to Los Angeles to crash at their leaders mansion and take some time off. However, they quickly become entangled with a person who can grant you your wishes, but at a cost. The cost is doing a favor for him, when the time comes.

So this story felt a bit derivative of the Runaways, in that its a team of young heroes discovering a secret that their parents kept, and being entwined within that secret. And while the Runaways had a great sense of character development that mixed very well with the plot itself, here in Hellions, it seems that the plot was the main driving point of the story. And being that the plot, which is about wishes and the price you will pay to have them fulfilled, was... ok at best, the book doesn't hold up too well in my opinion.

The characterization took a back seat for the most part, instead opting for more traditional roles such as "arrogant, yet well meaning leader", the "a lot of muscle but not much brain" member, the "female hero with a secret crush on someone that doesn't realize it" type, etc... it was all a bit too by the numbers and that took the excitement out of it for me. The villain is pretty stereotypical as well, and is defeated pretty easily by the end of the book.

I would recommend this if you are a fan of young team type books. However, don't expect much in the way of groundbreaking.

The Hellions really, I really don't care for the name or team in general. I the story plot was one we have heard and is a classic. I will say unlike the outcome in this story when deals are made with the devil the consequences are apparent. Other than this I thought this was an above average comic and worth the read. I love relating anything I read to real life and this is a story that give you that. The art was very solid a well. I give this book a 3.3 out of 5.0.

I enjoyed this book way more than I thought I would. I was really sure they would grow up to be villains... But I guess they suprised me, and I really liked that. Who would actually be able to resist everything they ever wanted?

The hellions are so cool I loved this story Julian is my favorite. This story was great I liked the greatest wish thing that was cool and Brian's made me so sad I now actually like him a lot more. Julian had some great moments and that would make any book for me worth reading.

Marvel has never been afraid to expand the X-Men mythos by adding new members and spin-off teams. The Hellions are the newest team, and they seem quite fit to face the world of today.

The Hellions are actually a squad of students that are attending Academy X, which is the core of the New X-Men comics. They are made up of the outsiders at the school. They are taken under the wing of Emma Frost, former villain and evil lady White Queen from the Hellfire Club, who has mended her ways after her original Hellions (also villains) died in battle. Her guidance and their skills seem to be quite fruitful since the squad turns out to be the winners of an intra-school competition that is not unlike the House Cup competition in the Harry Potter books.

The team is made up of:

* Hellion, a.k.a. Julian Keller, is telekinetic.
* Dust, a.k.a. Sooraya Qadir, is a shy girl from Afghanistan who can turn herself into a living whirlwind of dust. She regularly dresses in a niqab, or veil.
* Mercury, a.k.a. Cessily Kincaid, a shapeshifter whose body is composed of non-toxic liquid mercury.
* Rockslide, a.k.a. Santo Vaccaro, able to manifest a physical body comprised of solid rock from the immediate environment and launch limbs at great velocity.
* Tag, a.k.a. Brian Cruz, could psionically "tag" a person so that bystanders are compelled to run away from the person.
* Wither, a.k.a. Kevin Ford, can destroy organic matter on touch. He accidentally killed his father when his powers manifested.

This volume, their first adventure under their own title, joins the team as they are heading out for their summer vacation with hopes of spending it with Hellion's wealthy family in California. They can't even get onto a plane before things get really interesting. Before long they find themselves in the middle of a situation where they could have their most cherished dreams ... for a price. When it comes time to pay that price, they learn what it really means to be heroes.

These characters are unique and very interesting and are involved with backgrounds and storylines, such as bioterrorism and the war in Afghanistan, that keep the Marvel Universe current. In some ways, they harken back to the second generation of X-Mean, which had Storm, Banshee, Wolverine, Nightcrawler, and Colossus at its core because of how the characters are troubled teens being cobbled together into an effective group of heroes.

The focus on a smaller cast of characters seems to suit Weir & DeFilippis's writing, as this is the best of the Academy X books that I've read so far. It's a tight, reined in story about wish fulfillment that skirts the cliches rather than tripping over them.

Clayton Henry's art is also a boon for this collection.

A short but sweet story featuring the Hellions from DeFilippis' run on New X-Men.

This gives a bit more depth to some of the supporting characters. Completely non-essential but good for fans of the New X-Men.

By leaps and bounds the best of "New X-Men: Academy X" yet, and it's not even in the main series.

Probably my favorite New X-men book so far. I think I prefer the Hellion team and it's flawed by good members, over the somewhat bland New Mutants squad.

It's a fairly simple story, and it's short on teen drama but it has some decent action and a reasonable plot.

Also nice to see some consistent, likable, non-gratuitous art!
