“THE INSURMOUNTABLE EDGE (Book One) is an on-point action thriller with a wisecracking antihero that will win over fans of Tom Clancy, Jeffrey Deaver and Robert Ludlum." - Rob Errera, IndieReader.com
Overview of Three Book Story
Two children savagely stoned to death in the California desert. Top employees of a U.S. defense contractor dying at an alarming rate. A cryptic message sent by a strange, secretive source warns the contractor’s products have been corrupted and could be used against the U.S. Armed Forces.
They all seem to be connected. But how?
Only two men on earth are capable of putting it all together and those men are Jack Wilder and Jeff Bradshaw, two of the greatest special operations forces soldiers who have ever lived.
There's a problem though. Jack and Jeff are off-duty at Jack’s ranch while Jeff tries to recover from a severe case of post-traumatic stress disorder. Jack's seventeen-year-old ward, a hellcat named Adelaide, is also on the ranch. Nothing seems more impossible than getting the three of them to leave their safe commune. But then, a mysterious blue Maybach shows up at the ranch. The Maybach's visit sends Adelaide, Jack and Jeff off on a dangerous trail of murder and intrigue as they confront the insurmountable edge.
“Thomas H. Goodfellow’s timely political thriller The Insurmountable Edge imagines a world in which the US and China move close to open warfare.” - Benjamin Welton, ForewordReviews.com
I’m the author of The Insurmountable Edge, a three-book story that takes readers deep into a world of corruption, covert warfare, and the ruthless edge where politics meets revenge. At its heart are Jack Wilder and Jeff Bradshaw, legendary soldiers forced out of retreat and into a deadly pursuit of truth, joined by Adelaide, a fiercely independent teenager who refuses to be sidelined. Together, they face a shadowy adversary whose reach threatens not just their lives, but the nation itself.
When I’m not writing, I’m usually off the grid. California, Hawaii, Kentucky, and Wyoming are the places I return to—landscapes that shape the grit and atmosphere of my fiction.

The U.S. is on the brink of a deadly war with China in the debut international thriller, "Insurmountable Edge: Book One" by Thomas H. Goodfellow. The only person who can counter the threat is the steel-edged General Jack Wilder. His execution of some of the deadliest missions on behalf of the US in the elite special forces has forged him into a deadly weapon which enemies will have to reckon with. Jack Wilder is similar to Jack Reacher created by Lee Child, but he has his own unique foibles.
The story starts out in a horrific scene where two children are forced to dig their own graves before they are stoned to death. General Jack Wilder then takes over as the narrator. Retired and living at his plush Californian ranch, he cares for his hellbent seventeen-year-old ward, Adelaide, and his army buddy, Jeff, suffering from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PSTD). Ironically, Wilder's unresolved issues with PSTD makes him prone to hallucinations.
A striking physician, Kate, seeks Wilder's help in solving a series of murders with international security implications at a company she oversees. Meanwhile, war is ready to break out in the Middle East with China that will have an “insurmountable edge“ in the conflict. Tasked with investigating the insurmountable edge, Jack Wilder’s mission twists with unexpected turns as murders pile up and he is sometimes off edge talking with imaginary people and animals—possibly clues to political machinations behind the scenes. The book does not end with a classical cliffhanger but continues in what will be a three-book series that should connect the murders and international conflict.
Author Goodfellow has written an action-packed thriller filled with unique, memorable characters and vivid descriptions. The interactions between the characters and the smart, crisp dialogue work hand-in-hand with action scenes and unexpected twists to drive the story forward. Even though Wilder struggles with his own internal turmoil, he is an engaging character with a hint of chivalry toward Kate. But make no mistake, he is more than capable of maximum damage against his enemies.
“The Insurmountable Edge,” is an exciting start to a three-book series that spins a complex web of international intrigue and unforeseen enemies that promise to be the ultimate match for Jack Wilder. Highly recommended for fans of complex international thrillers with a hero you can root for.
I really enjoyed this book. Thomas Goodfellow is one of the best storytellers I have come across. This book is a very satisfying mystery told with wit and intelligence that moves very quickly. The prose allows you to immerse yourself in the action and, in a fascinating way, is both entertaining and soothing. The heroic characters jump off the page and I loved spending time with them. Anyone who likes the kinds of books written by Robert B. Parker, Henning Mankell, Lee Child, Jeffrey Deaver, Robert Ludlum, Tom Clancy and Ian Fleming will also like this book. I recommend it very highly.
This is a really fun book! It is hugely entertaining. The writing is exceptional and the story is incredibly well done. The heroes are people are I want to hang out with. I literally couldn't put it down. Highly recommended.
Brilliant. I suggest all mystery thriller writers read The Insurmountable Edge to see how the genre should be done. One of the few books that combines great characters with a great story. Immensely satisfying and entertaining.
This book is a gem. It introduces heroes and heroines I really like and that remind me of my favorite characters in John Grisham novels and some John Sandford and David Baldacci ones too. I hope book two comes out soon as I want to see what happens next.
I would strongly recommend an editor. Strongly, strongly recommend. In a few sentences alone: "You know why I bought this t-shirt for you, don't you, my darling?" Grace had said as she handed the shirt to me. "Because it reminds you of my brain?" I had said. "No," Grace had said. Half a paragraph later: "You'd give my face back to me when I came home though, right?" I had said. "That depends," Grace had said. "Depends on what?" I had said. "On whatever I decide it depends on," Grace had said.
The story is bland and very difficult to read because of poor wording and sentence structure. Perhaps an English course would aid you in writing your next book.
I received this book through a Goodreads giveaway. I’m glad that I didn’t pay for it as I had to give up after three chapters. I don’t read books which take the name of the Lord in vain. I also struggled with the poor quality writing. There were way too many instances where pronouns should have been used in place of the noun being referred to, something a good editor would have caught. In my opinion the quality of the writing was on par with that of what I saw from the fifth grade students I taught years ago. It was painful to read and I had taken enough. Time to move on to something more worthy of my time.
What I enjoyed about this book was that Goodfellow nicely tied up loose ends - which a lot of authors fail to do. Lots of twists that carry the story along and that keep you guessing. This book would satisfy someone looking for a high stakes thriller that offers a deep story line and character development. Jack Wilder is an intriguing character and adds laugh out loud moments. Ready for book two!
All of the women that the main character interacts with are competent, good-looking, but their body features always stretch the limits of their clothing. The reader can see the obvious plot turns way before the characters, and we aren't even there. No need to read Book Two to find women who bought clothes one size too small and know how it is going to end. The Butler did it.
I tried reading this book and it's very difficult to read. It bounces between short choppy sentences and long run on sentences. The premise seems interesting but this book definitely needs professional editing.
I appreciated that this author took on the topic of combat PTSD. As an avid fan of the Reacher and Bourne series, the cerebral writing-style was a fresh element. You're very much "along for the ride" with this book and I enjoyed it.
This novel has many excellent features!! Goodfellow introduces believable characters with witty dialogue to provide the moving parts for a suspenseful—and deeply personal—narrative. He creates a relatable protagonist, Jack Wilder, whose personal struggles impact not only his thoughts, but actions. Book One provides solid groundwork in preparation for Book Two and I'm curious to see how the plot unfolds!
This book was amazing. One of the best reads I’ve ever experienced. I will say there were a lot of characters but they all played an important role in the story. I love the hero effect and I can’t wait for book 2 and 3 of this series. The plot of the story wasn’t predictable until the end but I will say the ending was very nice and I enjoyed the book a ton. Definitely a great book for historical fiction lovers.
I am so happy to have found a book with two strong female protagonists since it is hard enough just to find books with one! I found that Goodfellow has a strong command of the English language and knows how to weave a tale too. I am really pleased I discovered this series.
I came across this book and found it strangely similar to what’s in the news with defense contractors and ex-military tipping off China to start a war. The political backstory makes me wonder what this author knows!!
This first book is hard to read. Everything is drawn out to the max and constantly wanders off topic with overly descriptive prose. I found myself skimming through the text to get to the point, but even that did not help.
I could not put this book down. Moves along at the speed of light. The heroes are very clever and the mystery is very complex. I have emailed the author to tell me when book two will be out.
If you are going to read one thriller, this is the one to read! Is it a mystery or a thriller? Book one is definitely both. This in one of the best thrillers I have read. The character development of Jack, Jeff, Adelaide and Kate, the major characters, is superb! The plot is normal thriller/mystery; but the storyline, characters and writing puts it at the top of thrillers.
The book starts with a prologue. Two small children are taken into the desert and stoned to death. I was completely hooked at that point. General Jack is on extended leave at his ranch. He is taking care of his friend, General Jeff who is suffering from PTSD. General Jack also has custody of Adelaide, who has gotten into trouble and must wear an ankle monitor. Both generals are contacted by superiors asking their help. China army is on the border in the Middle East looking to take over the oil fields and start a war. China has an Insurmountable Edge and the generals are asked to help find out what it is.
A defense company has been having employees die in seemingly "accidental" deaths. One of the owners comes to Jack's ranch and begs for help. One of Jack and Jeff superiors has sent her there to beg for help. Her company makes many defense items. The government believes one of the items may be the Chinese "Insurmountable Edge." Jack leaves.with Kate to go see if he can figure it out. The story escalates from there.
This is Book 1 of 3. When I reached the end of Book 1; I was bummed thinking I would have wait to read the next 2 books. Luckily they have both been released. I ordered book 2 and 3 before I started writing this review.
I won Book 1 from a Goodreads giveaway. I might have never read it, if I hadn't won it. The book is truly outstanding!!
I'll start out this review by saying that if you pick it up and get interested enough to fund out how the story ends, this is a real commitment. I knew this was a book in a series, but figured it was like other series where they focused on the same characters, but had different stories in each book. That is not the case with this one. This book is literally part one of what is evidently a three book story. At the end of this book, you will have no conclusion as to how the story ends.
I did enjoy the book. General Jack Wilder has been on leave for 2 years caring for his niece and his fellow soldier (who is suffering from PTSD) on his ranch. When unexpected visitors appear on the morning of the anniversary of the death of Wilder's wife, he is pulled into helping the visitor (who looks a lot like his dead wife) and saving the country from war.
Definitely a good story and interesting, especially if you are into thrillers that involve the military. But, this is very slow. Book one was very long, and we are evidently only 1/3 of the way through the story and figuring out the "whodunit". I feel that the book could have used some editing to whittle out some of the unnecessary parts and dialogue, and that would have kept things moving faster.
I received an advance review copy for free and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
Thank you to author Thomas H. Goodfellow for this FREE Kindle copy of The Insurmountable Edge, Book One.
Could have been pushing 5-star area. A solid 4-star, but WAY too many editing issues. I'm still flummoxed by people on both sides - readers and writers - with the lack of care for quality. I'd love to continue this series but wouldn't be able to pay for something of this quality of penmanship. Hire an editor please. What a great, entertaining and fun story. A gifted story teller for sure, but a good editor can tighten up the characters, conversations and sentence structure to help create a finished product one can be proud of.
The story of a general getting thrown into a messy situation as a civilian and as a general that he must figure out before going to war with China. Of course, this all happens on a day that has personal significance to him and he must try to focus on the task at hand. Eventually, the US government steps in to provide protection and investigative skills, but they seem to only be in the General’s way. While solving the mystery, he must keep the target safe from the people behind the scenes.
I have mixed feelings on this one. It was the slowest moving thriller I have ever read. There was enough intrigue and mystery to keep me reading but how did l those things happen in one 24 hour period but also it took a chapter at a time for the main character to walk across a parking lot? The relationship dynamics/love story were not that believable given what was going on that day. In those circumstances nobody got time for romance. It was an interesting plot but way stretched out for 500 pages. I see it is part of a 3 book series. Makes sense but still feels too drawn out.
I received this book as part of the Goodreads giveaways for a review
This book starts off strong and keeps the pages turning. Heroes and heroines tackle things that are happening in the world today. Trigger warning for PTSD - so be warned. However this is a real topic and my family tackles it together so I appreciated this being part of the story. My husband and I are looking forward to the next one in the series.
Every female character in this book is described by her breasts first followed by body, hair, and eyes. And every time the female character again appears in the story, she is again introduced by her breasts. Likewise, every general is so masculine they could be January, February, and March on the calendar. The humor is sophomoric, the plot is interesting but instead of action, there is a lot of telling going on. I won’t be reading book two and three of this series.
I thoroughly enjoyed Book One - a real page turner. Unfortunately, that was the only book in a story consisting of three books which I won in that particular contest. Thus it ended abruptly in the middle of the story, leaving me quite frustrated. I'll have to remember never again to enter a contest for a book that is only part of a grouping.
