Immortal Words is an anthology of history's most memorable, uplifting and thought-provoking quotations from all ages and nations. The texts are drawn not only from the works and words of great writers, thinkers and orators, but also from less well-known sources such as gravestones, book dedications, speeches and political manifestos, letters and diaries, inscriptions and chance remarks.

Each of the 370 quotations is accompanied by an extended annotation that tells the story of the speaker or explains the circumstances that gave rise to the quotation. The words and sentiments expressed have been used to encapsulate the human condition, to inspire great works or deeds in times of hardship, or simply reflect the spirit of the time--they will live with you and inspire you day by day, from one year's end to the next.

This book was a legit experience. Actually invigorates me to read more classics and poems. But I felt like with any collection it was a bit biased to the authors own favorites and feel there can be much more quotes and figures which can be added rather than the predominantly western authors. Immortal English words would be more apt

I love history and the people who made it...well, some of them anyways.

NOTHING ENDURES BUT CHANGE (HERACLITUS)

We are constantly affected by outside forces; but must look for simplicity to find truth and true freedom.

Be content with what you have, rejoice in the way things are. When you realise there is nothing lacking, the whole world belongs to you. (Lao-tzu)

Doubt everything and seek the truth, not holding on to what is impermanent (Buddha)

Worthless people live only to eat and drink; people of worth eat and drink to live (Socrates)

The greatest wealth is to live content with little (Plato)

We have not to fear anything, except fear itself (Julius Caesar)

An object in possession seldom retains the same charm that had in pursuit (Pliny the Younger)

There are 3 principal ways of acquiring knowledge - observation of nature, reflection and experimentation. Our observations of nature must be diligent, our reflection profound and our experiments exact. Rarely do we see the 3 combined and therefore creative geniuses are not common (Denis Diderot).

A thing of beauty is a job forever (John Keats)

Genius is 1% inspiration and 99% perspiration (Thomas Edison)

Love is doing small things with great love (Mother Theresa)

I started this book some years ago, reading entries on and off, then ended up misplacing it. I found it a few days ago and read the last half of the book quickly. Each page begins with a famous quote and tells where that quote came from. The rest of the page is spent giving a brief biography of the person who said it, as well as other famous quotes that person may be known for. It's a nice little read because you can pick it up anytime you like and get a little tidbit of history. Very good for late-night reading when you want to fill in the few minutes you're awake before falling asleep. It is laid out in chronological order of when the famous quote was said. The book starts with Moses (1393 - 1273 BCE) and ends with Barack Obama (2008). I wouldn't say that this is an all-encompassing, comprehensive book of quotes, I know there are others out there that are more definitive, but it's still a nice read for the size of it.

I have shelved this as humour but it isn't, really, though many of the immortal words to raise a smile, some are unintentional funny, maybe ironic would be best. But the book fascinating and enjoyable, in a light way, but surprisingly interesting. It reminds of all sorts of people you have forgotten and can make you feel clever just because you recognise them.

Very enjoyable and perhaps odd and unclassifiable is best.

An expertly researched if not somewhat dry book of quotes. My main problem with this book is the boringness of some of the quotes. There was really nothing to keep me reading other than the occasional interesting quote. However, the paragraphs explaining the quotes were well-written and informative, leaving the door open for readers to do future research. More interesting books of quotes could probably be found, but this one isn't bad.

More a historical review of influential thinkers than a true collection of memorable quotes. Many quotes are nothing more than excerpts of prose or obscure literature, but the people behind them are interesting.

Very good information and knowledge you can get out of this book.
English is my second language, i found it a bit hard to understand everything because hard words are used so often in this book.

One of the best general history reference works I've read. A few of the choices are a bit open to debate...but it's a minor quibble. A solid piece of work for any history shelf.

A cool book with famous quotes and it tells you who said them and what it's from! It's pretty fun to flip through and read the ones you know. ~Ashley
