WHAT IF THE FATE OF THE WORLD LAY IN THE HANDS OF AN UNLIKELY PAIR OF MISFITS AND A DRAGON’S EGG?

Roger Briggs has been trained to believe there is no such thing as Magick and has only ever shown interest in his own scientific pursuits, mainly that of studying bugs.

“Science & Law & Nothing More!”

This is the Government's mantra that Roger and all children are taught in this alternative 1950’s Inglande, where even Science itself is being manipulated by unseen powers, who are secretly plotting to rule all the hidden Worlds of Planet Erf.

But then a chance collision with the nature loving, quick witted Mary, changes everything. This soon leads our unlikely heroes on adventures they could never have imagined as they discover the Magick of Under Erf and encounter the elusive and mysterious Dragon Queen Mavis.

Faced with impossible odds and deadly foes, do Roger and Mary have the courage to rescue the last Dragon’s Egg entrusted to them and its unhatched Dragon Prince?

A rollercoaster ride of a story that had me turning the pages as fast as I could. SR Langley has created an extraordinary world, a clever parody on our real one with some brilliantly witty twists on names, science and culture. His protagonists are wonderfully quirky young characters who captured my heart. This is magic realism at its best. Breathless adventure, comic and tragic at the same time, scary and heart-warming. You just want to yell - Go, Go, Go! and cheer our unlikely heroes on. It's a miracle they survive, and not just thanks to the magic, because Langley puts them through sheer hell and tests their courage to the utmost. Fantastic read!

I'm sorry, but I had a hard time getting into this first book. It was really slow and sometimes confusing. It is a very interesting story. younger kids would probably like it as one of their first books to read. Anyway, get on to reading and follow the dragon egg story. Will read the next book to see how the story progresses. I received a free copy for my honest review.

A modern-day classic!

Glorious creatures, lovable characters, and the beginning of a Noble quest in the unfathomable and mysterious depths of Earth itself. This is some of the best writing I have ever had the privilege to read with countless quotable snippets of wisdom. This series is sure to become a timeless fantasy classic, and I truly cannot wait to start the next book. I will be sharing this rare gem with all of my homeschool and teacher friends.

Loved this book. Fantasy is so much fun to read especially with dragons. You can go to a new place and dream. This one is a definite read. Well written and recommended. I received a review copy and voluntarily review it.

Well, this seems a bit like a "Young Adult" book (the main protagonists are 13, except for the one who's 1000 years old), and I'm over seventy . . .
However, I thoroughly enjoyed it and have just read the first page or two of the second in the series.
I see a lot of 'truths' and 'lessons' hidden amongst the humour and adventure, but not intrusively; they're just there to see if you want to.
It definitely (as one of the other reviews says) is a roller-coaster ride - it runs from apathy to fear, anger, enthusiasm, action and back down again regularly - with a lot of humour thrown in.
It's a GOOD read.
Yes - even the puns and satirical bits!

It's well worth getting past the long "setting the scene" part at the beginning, imo
I nearly gave up on this book because it seemed to be getting nowhere since the scene-setting portion at the beginning goes on a while- I'd knock it down a star for that except that after reading the whole book, and becoming acquainted with the story and the author, I feel it is probably necessary in later parts of the story.
Mr. Langley is a good writer- you won't be annoyed and distracted by errors of all sorts everywhere. His writing is clever, and once past the intro, the story also moves right along, although I really could have done without the mimicry of extremely unrefined hick or yokel type speech Mary often falls into, especially when copying granny, and I really felt it was NOT necessary in any way.
It is a quest sort of tale somewhat like the ring trilogy or "The Hobbit", but to me it has a distinctly "Lemony Snicket" sort of flavor, and I enjoyed it just as much as those books or the story of the " Series of Unfortunate Events". It is unfortunate for readers that this author died before writing many more books.

The True-Dragon Under Erf World is attacked by the twin Core World fireworms and their mindless minions. A millennium later, Mavis, a True-Dragon, and her 3rd and final egg, lie in what is left of an Under Erf cavern, close to the Over Erf. Two young Humdrums (that is, humans for us readers) exploring the Bad Woods on the other side of the River Quaggy, fall into a crack between roots under the house of the Tree King, where they meet Mavis. This story has plenty of action, danger, ridiculousness, bullying, cowardice, and courage, ending in a cliffhanger. Highly recommended.

I received a copy of this book via the author and am voluntarily leaving a review.

Wonderfully Exciting!!
This was a great story (series starter) from the very beginning! I loved the characters in that totally engrossed and engaging effect thru the whole book! The great thing with fantasy genre, is that it is not written in some one elses shadow, or by others stories rules. It is up to the author as it should go, and this is most certainly a Great Story!
This is a great book for most ages, and the ending is one left for the next episode! Thank you S. R. Langley for a Great Story!

Set aside a day for this family-friendly dystopian paranormal set in an alternative England in 1951 with all the characteristics of literature for children of that time but enough anachronisms to show that it is of more recent vintage. This is a millennia-long dragon war enlisting a pair of 13-year-olds whose behavior matches what was appropriate for their age in 1951 even if teens today will have trouble believing it. I had an ARC via Bookfunnel and this voluntary review is my own opinion.

‘Dragon’s Egg’ is the magnificent start of a great series !

I really liked Roger. He’s a boy with doubts and worries, but in times of need he throws all that overboard and becomes a brave and determined man. And it takes a girl like Mary to bring him out of hiding from the world.

The adventure was quick-paced and exciting, never a dull moment. Brilliant.
Looking forward to reading the other three novels !

This is Jed, Steve Langley's son. My dad is fighting cancer so I am helping him at this time. I can confirm I have read the book and as an avid fantasy fan spanning from Sword of Truth series, Harry Potter, Nightside series and the Kingkiller Chronicles - I absolutely loved Dragon's Egg. It's a light read, fun and honestly engaing and I'm saying that with the above titles in mind. It's simply fresh, original and a thrill ride of an fantasy adventure with characters that burst to life. I'm sure you'll love it. I will make my own account soon to do a proper review but thought I might as well say this here in the meantime for those perusing this book. Many thanks.

The author loved his alliteration... This was a fun romp and a good introduction to a bigger story. It had a very slow build and I had a harder time engaging with the characters (maybe because I'm older than they are), but it led to a good payoff and sets up a potentially engaging story. Good worldbuilding once it got rolling.

In the years, and the time of Dragons, you travel from the age of Kings and knights to a century. The King who is a cruel King and his twin is more sympathetic. Killing all of his enemies from the King to the heirs of the of another Kingdom.

Gran was raising her granddaughter Mary, who's mother was gone. She had taught Mary herbs and which to pick for pain and healing.

By reading this book from a new Author to me, I will definitely be looking for more of their books from now on.

I loved the differences in the story and the Characters were great. They kept me reading to find out what was happening next. I think you will enjoy reading Dragon's Egg as I did.

Check this Author out and find what books they have to offer.
