Run. Fight. Survive.

A life of violence and drugs leaves Marianna Cortez desperate for normality. For a brief instant, she thinks she has found that with Denendrius. But he can’t maintain his sweet facade for long. Soon, he reveals himself for what he is... a deranged vampire longing to ensnare her in a deadly game of cat and mouse.

Plan. Plot. Pray.

Forced to play a part in Denendrius’s twisted fantasies, Marianna hunts for a way to escape. But he’s stronger than her and capable of unimaginable cruelty.

With her only hope of survival being to study her captor and learn his weaknesses, can Marianna uncover secrets from Denendrius’s dark past she can use to destroy him? Or will this monster, who clawed his way through her history, slaughter her chance at a future?

Cracked Coffins is the first book in a dark fantasy thriller series that explores the horrors of abusive relationships with a vampiric twist. This is not a dark romance series with a HEA for the abused and their abuser, but a story of survival. Cracked Coffins comes with heavy CWs and dark themes that can be viewed inside the book’s front matter and on the author’s website.

English review

Cracked coffins is a book about Marianna, a 17-year-old girl who lives a life with terrible events.

Then an older man named Den shows a strong interest in her. In fact, this book is not for the sensitive. It contains a lot of explicit scenes of drugs, abuse, rape, and more.

But it is definitely not an ordinary book. It is not based on the typical story of a normal girl who falls in love with a male vampire. It is quite entertaining to read because of the intrigue it causes.

Definitely a very creepy read for this Halloween season.

Thank you so much to the author for the review copy of Cracked Coffins in exchange for an honest review!  I was originally supposed to be on a book tour that was cancelled so I really appreciate her sending the book anyway.

This is a DARK dark dark thriller / paranormal / not-romance that happens to have vampires. Stalking, abuse, drugs, gangs, all of the above and more – and I read it in just about two sittings! I couldn’t put it down if you paid me to, because the action and suspense is just nonstop.

The twisted mind of the Vampire, Denendrius, was unbelievably sadistic at times.  What is he going to do next? How much can I possibly hate one character? The whole plot kept twisting like his mind! I kind of at least had a begrudging respect for Marianna, what a terrible life she was raised in and what do you do when you’re trapped by a monster like she is??  I had to keep flipping pages to see if she would even live or not. I never felt like there was a good stopping point because I had to know what happened next!

I would have liked to see more from Carol, but maybe in book two?  The whole ending confused me a bit, a whole new sect of characters were thrown into the mix without a whole lot of backstory. I am very confused as to why the women weren’t using that knife to saw off a certain vampire’s head while he was down?

This is definitely not a YA book but the main character is 16-17. Would recommend for anyone looking for a paranormal domestic  thriller that is absolutely impossible to put down.

Thank you again to the author for the review copy, all opinions are my own!

A huge thank you to the author and Booksirens for giving me early access to this book in exchange for an honest review!

🩸 The story 🩸
The book is about Marianna, a girl with a very troubled past (and present & future honestly). Her bleak existence seemingly changes when she meets an older guy, Denendrius, who might not be as good as she thought.

I can't explain how much I loved this story. I was expecting a vampire romance story, but that's definitely not what it is. I won't talk about that too much, because I realized many other reviews already do. Even though I was expecting something else, I can't say I enjoyed it any less because of the way it did turn out. This story touches on some heavy themes, and you definitely shouldn't read it if blood (well, what are you reading a vampire story for then anyway ;) ), rape, drugs, abuse or any of the other themes mentioned, trigger you. That being said, let me get into it.

Somehow, I could not put this book down. It's action packed, and there just never is a good moment to actually put it down. These kind of stories aren't necessarily what I enjoy most of the time, because of the way hard things are watered down most of the time, but this book definitely doesn't do that. It shows an abusive relationship, without sugarcoating anything. but I'll get more into that when I discuss the characters.

The way it's written, I just love it so much. The way we already know what Den is from the blurb gave so many funny moments in my opinion. The way he couldn't eat because he had a doctor appointment and how cold he is, I was screaming at Marianna to figure it out. Lol, I loved that.
The good thing is that I normally know exactly what'll happen, but with this story, I didn't have a clue. I had so many theories and yes they were all wrong, I don't want to talk about it, leave me alone.

Thinking back, I'm realizing not even that much really happens in the book. It's just that the way it's written, kept me on my toes, because I really wanted to know what happened/happens to Marianna. It kinda felt like a thriller in that sense. I felt depressed while reading it, because her future just all seems so bleak, and I was really hoping there would at least be some light in her life. But Keres, I might come for you for that ending.

🩸 The characters 🩸
🚬Marianna I loved Marianna so much. She's such a real character; who obviously has many flaws. The story starts off with her in school, showing how she will probably fail her year again, and vaguely mentions her past. She's struggling not to fall back into using drugs. It immediately made me wonder what made her use it at such a young age in the first place and why her birthday is so terrible to her, which was such a great way to start the story. Everything, from her struggle with drugs to her dark past, it all made her such a good character. She honestly just wants to be loved, but somehow always ends up in a messed up situation. I loved the way this was written, because it really showed her struggles and her pushing everyone away, but then realizing she wished they'd actually care for her. Like Poor thing. She's just a very distrusting person, which makes her seem so realistic. I loved the way we found out more and more about her past - and Den's past - throughout the story. The way this was so subtly done, I loved it. I do still want to know so much more about her past, like her time with the gang, but I'm guessing we'll get that in the next one.

⚰️Den What do I say about him? Honestly, he made me laugh. The way his mind works was SO messed up, it was laughable. Not in a bad way towards Keres, not at all. I just mean his reasoning, for example which was one of the things that made me laugh. He's such a psycho that he doesn't see what's wrong in his actions, and that was so messed up that I couldn't help but laugh at the things he did.

Like I said, I was expecting a romance, so I kept thinking he'd turn out cute and we'd love him anyway. I'm still hoping xD I mean, the ending, I mean, it is cute how protective he is I guess..? No, I know, he's crazy, but I'm obviously still rooting for romance. That did change for a while though; I'm not saying I was okay with ANYTHING he did to her, because I hate his guts, but I hated him even more when He's so messed up, it kept me on my toes, because I kept thinking about what he'd do next. Damn, I sound just as crazy as him, but he was just such a good character. Don't want to meet him in real life though, thank you very much. Here's me loving this very toxic quote from him;
"Are you planning on leaving me when I fall asleep? Don't call Sergei if you do, okay? There's no guarantee I'll wake up anyway, and I'm not sure it's worth it if you aren't here,"

You know Keres, it's really great how you wrote this in such a way that I felt very bad for him. Damn, I might even liked him at the end. Please don't come for me

Some great characters were introduced throughout the story, and I'm honestly sad to see them go. The group of characters at the end was a bit random, but I'm guessing they'll have more depth in the next book. I'm also secretly hoping we'll see more of Sarah, because she's really interesting and tragic to me. I'm also hoping to see more of Daina and my fellow psychologist Camille. I did expect Carol to fight for her a bit more, but apparently she didn't care as much as I expected her to.

🩸 Overall conclusion 🩸
All in all, I enjoyed this story way too much. I had a lot of trouble with putting it down, and although there are some very heavy subjects in it, I loved it. I was rooting for Marianna to survive, and I felt all of her pain right along with her. Den was such a great character, he was definitely a psychopath, and I can't wait to find out more about him. I seriously can't wait to find out what happens in the next book.

Here's one theory of mine, which I actually do think is true:
- When Alaire talked about child vampires - I realized Marianna was definitely a child vampire. Right?! The way she barely remembers anything from her childhood, and how her new parents were killed; she was probably turned when they were killed. I don't know, but I really do think that's what happened to her as a child. We'll see..

👍🏼 Writing style; how it kept me on my toes; the tragic depths of the main characters; the slow burn mystery; the realness of the abusive relationship; only a few mistakes in the writing; how the writing made me feel bad for Den.

👎🏼 The ending; not enough depth of sidecharacters (yet?)

Keres please contact me if you want to know which mistakes in writing there were, because I actually tagged them because there were so little of them! Loved that. The editor in me is always busy with checking the writing, sorry ;)

Easily the best vampire book I've ever read. In a twist I absolutely adored, it turned the enemies-to-lovers trope on its head, called out abuse, and developed one of the best main characters I'll be left thinking about for a long time!

The captivating and highly believable main character, Marianna, is a down-on-her-luck teen from a string of foster homes, with a past of hard drugs, parental abuse, neglect, and prostitution. But when she runs into a vampire who has been stalking her for far longer than her trauma allows her to remember, she thinks he's the perfect gentleman, until he starts exhibiting controlling behaviours. As his abuse worsens and the systems put in place to protect girls like Marianna try to help, she realises she's just putting anyone she reaches out to in danger. Warring against old memories resurfacing, day to day physical abuse, addiction, street rivalries, and a blood mark tying her to her captor, Marianna examines her life in ways she never had to before. The lore in this book is a perfect mix of old truths vampire fans all know and love, and new twists to make the series truly memorable. I'm so excited to order the next book and see where this goes!

Cracked Coffins is a really tricky book to review. It’s well written, it takes and twists some of the vampire tropes, and it is both compelling and yet very hard to read at times. It is potentially triggering and I would advise caution if you have experience of any number of ACEs (adverse childhood experiences).

What the author does incredibly well is use fantasy to share some hard truths. Powerful writing and a thin thread of hope kept me glued to the very last line. This is not your average vampire novel - you won’t find any Edward Cullen’s here, not even a Lestat. This is madness. This is obsession. This is American Psycho with regenerative powers. Thomas doesn’t write shades of evil and beauty is never presented as a redeeming feature.

It’s a tricky book to review because I found it to be a painful read at times. Thomas generates a sense of despair and there were times I found myself having to put the book down and take a break. But I will absolutely be reading the sequel.

I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily

Cracked Coffins was a dark and twisted tale of love and obsession. It is not your typical Human falls in love with a vampire book. It is a terrifying tale of abuse, stalking, and unrequited affection. ⁣⁣⠀
⁣⁣⠀
Marianna s a 17 year old girl who has had a terrible life. Her mother solicited her to men, gave her drugs and kept her locked up. After being taken from her mothers custody, she bounced around in the foster care system. ⁣⁣⠀
⁣⁣⠀
One day she reluctantly agrees to a date with Den. This is the beginning of violent, controlling, and down right scary one sided relationship. Marrianna fears for her life, and her friends lives, and has to figure out how to get out alive. ⁣⁣⠀
⁣⁣⠀
Cracked Coffins spotlights the horror of abusive relationships and how dangerous they can be. This is not a romantic Vampire fairytale ,at times it was hard to read, but it was fantastically written. ⁣⁣⠀
⁣⁣⠀
I had a hard time putting this book down! I read it in two sittings. My heart hurt for Marianna, and I was appalled at the things she went through. ⁣⁣⠀
⁣⁣⠀
Cracked Coffins was an addictive read that I couldn’t wait to turn the page to see what happened next! I can not wait until the next book comes out!!! ⁣⁣⠀

Trigger warning for drug addiction, overdose, abuse, rape. This is intended for a mature audience, proceed with caution. This is NOT a romance. If you still want to read it knowing this, I loved this book. This book broke my heart, shattered me, left me in pieces. While it's fantasy, the portrayal of abusive relationship is one of the best I've ever read and it's so important to talk about it. I can't wait for the next book.

This was such a good book. I didn't expect for it to go that way but it is a must read. It had me on edge and wanting more. When I took breaks reading to do other things, it made me think about what was next in the book. I had to hurry up and finish cooking so I could get back to it. Can't wait to read more from this great author.

I was very intrigued by the sequel to this and so decided to download Cracked Coffins to read before I requested the follow up. 'm no stranger to dark books, and I generally am okay with adult and traumatic themes when they are written well and make sense to the plot. Unfortunately, for me, this book just didn't hit that mark.

I didn't like that the main character was both so young and had experienced pretty much every bad thing possible by that point in her life, and I really didn't like that the book begins with her taking heroin and almost overdosing. It felt like all of that, on top of the vampire elements in the books and the terrible relationship she found herself forced into was just too much. Had she been older, like in her mid to late twenties, I think I would have been more open to it, but as a high school teacher, it was so hard to read this happening to a teenager.

I also struggled with the vampire lore in this book. It felt like this was two different books mashed together, with a confusing mixture of the vampire story and the abuse/trauma story. I genuinely feel that this would have worked as a book about her and this relationship as vampirism seemed to add a whole unnecessary layer of complexity.

That being said, I will say that the way PTSD is shown in this book was very well written. Rather than a lot of media that shows the same kind of reactions to trauma in regards to panic attacks, this one went deeper and did show how for some individuals, memory blocking and things like drugs can often be their only method of coping. I also thought the relationship between the two leads, though disturbing and unsettling, was also well written to show how easy it can be for a person who has faced trauma to be lulled into these kinds of situations.

Unfortunately, these positives just weren't enough for me to move beyond the problems I had and I wanted to put this book down so many times. I won't now be reading the second book, mostly because I fear that it is going to go down the path of redeeming an abuser, and I am not here for it. I also just didn't connect with any of the characters enough to care what happens next. I'm actually really upset by that because I was very excited to get into this one.

Cracked Coffins was a ride.
Marianna Cortez has no idea how she survived her latest overdose, but things seem to be turning a corner when she meets the handsome Den, an older man who takes an interest in her. As Marianna gets closer to Den, she realizes the man isn't everything he seems. He's controlling, violent, and a vampire. Now, Marianna struggles to survive not just her demons, but the literal demon that has crashed into her life and robbed her of her control over it.
Cracked Coffins has some super heavy content in it. Be aware that this book can be VERY triggering and graphic to people in regards to sexual assault, rapes, physical/mental/emotional abuse, drug abuse and general violence. If those are things that make you uncomfortable, don't read this book.
My biggest issue with this book is that it is marketed as YA, and I think that it is far too dark and too mature to be so. I would definitely classify this as an Adult or NA Paranormal Thriller, but I would not want my teen reading this book.
This all being said, Cracked Coffins wasn't all bad once you get past its dark themes and contents. I appreciated how, through Den's obsession with Marianna, the author vividly portrays how abusers tend to groom, isolate and abuse their victims by beating down their confidence and forcing them to be reliant on them. I also really appreciated getting into Marianna's mind as she tries her best to survive this relationship where power is completely unbalanced in the best way she knows to. It isn't perfect, and it's certainly not the way I would recommend, but Marianna's struggle in this book really illustrates how scary situations of abusive relationships are and how blurred the lines can seem to the victim. Understanding signs of domestic violence in any form is vitally important, and I am glad that the author did not even come close to condoning anything about the way Den treats Marianna. I also thought the lore surrounding Vampires and the Darklings/Children of Stars was interesting and I hope that the next book goes into that more. I also hope that Marianna gets to end Den once and for all.

First, let me clarify that this books classification should be more NA paranormal (with heavy trigger warnings).

Raiting: 3.5 (7/10)

Cracked Coffins is not for the faint of heart. It follows Marianna, an ex-substance abuser who falls of the the sobriety wagon on the night before her seventeenth birthday and and miraculously survives an overdose. But that survival bring with it Denendrius ‘Den’ Sovetta, a vampire that’s been around since Ancient Rome and whose apparent love for her holds a darker truth.

This really felt like the anti-romance vampire novel. It exchanges the typical ‘she’s not like other girls’ protagonist for a truly on their outskirts of “respectable” society abused teen. Marianna is not exactly likable, and she’s not trying to be, she’s not in a position for many high expectations and yet her ability to resists giving in is admirable. And Den is far from you’re idea of a romantic savior vampire, he’s a literal monster. I actually really liked the fact that I didn’t like the characters, it made it easier to read and keep in mind that this was not a relationship to romanticize. [*applause* for the author not making it a pretty and flowery romance] The trigger warning should be taken very seriously, as the author is portraying a realistic abusive relationship with are not cancelled out by the supernatural elements.

I also really like how the ending was handled, i was worried it might try to but it didn’t change anyone’s character to make a sequel possible. Instead it ended on a wait and see that leaves you intrigued for the next book, but not angrily leaving mid-action. That might not be appealing to some, but I’m not a huge fan of a nicely wrapped ending that needs to be undone for the next book or a typical cliffhanger ending that just makes me frustrated at the book.

I would like the next book to expand more from the original world building, I feel it’s the next natural progression in the story, as well as continue to expose the typical tropes a bit more.

Cracked Coffins (The Cracked Coffins Series Book 1) Kindle Edition

by  Beronika Keres

Thank you to the author, the publisher and Booksirens for the complimentary copy.

I'm disappointed... That the second novel in the series is not published yet!
I'm utterly obsessed, devastated and excited about this series! Mariana's story is tragic and yet triumphant as she moves from the angry, heroine addicted (in recovery) teenager in foster care, to the strong, angry fighter she can be.
Mariana meets Den, he seems to be the man of any girl's dreams, until he's not. Caught in an abusive relationship with him, Mariana has to find a way to escape from a vampire who insists he is the only way she can leave the poorer, more dangerous side of town before he kills her.
The tone of this book is dark, very dark, but there are slivers of hope. Ms. Keres manages to bring the flavor of a young woman who has lost all hope for her life. Ms. Keres also documents the birth, life and hopefully, death of an abusive relationship.
Beyond the complex and sympathetic character of Mariana, there are multiple versions of high school students – the shy boy, the Mean Girls and the jock. Ms. Keres's characters go beyond the Breakfast Club tropes. They are real people, with needs, sorrows and pain.
Cracked Coffins also gives us a new kind of vampire mythology, with at least 2 factions.
The villain of the peace, Den, in all his sociopathic, abusive darkness, is truly terrifying. He lacks any sense of right or wrong and uses his conversion to vampire as the excuse. Ms. Keres's characterization and history of Den makes it quite clear that he was born bad, not made mad.
Strong plotting keeps the reader engaged. Don't start this book late in the evening unless you want a sleepless night!
Completely un-put-downable while nightmare inducing, this book and the series looks to be amazing.

Boy, did I get more than I signed up for; I went into this thinking it was a Dark Mature YA Paranormal Romance. Two of those words apply Dark and Paranormal. This book is Dark, New Adult, Paranormal, Fiction with a side of woah-many triggers. And I didn't like it, but I'm giving it four freaking stars because it handles so many of those trigger topics so well.

Marianna is on the cusp of her seventeenth birthday. She's in the system, still in tenth grade, barely sober, on the run from gangs, and now a year from aging out. A good day is spending time with her girls, staying out of trouble, and keeping her head down. But it only takes one temptation. One more push to go over the ledge, and Marianna's just stepped too far.

I won't lie. I loathed her. Marianna made me want to cut a bee. She was bratty and annoying. I know Den is a psycho, but there were so many times I was on his side, just because she was such a childish cow! And that really says something because Denenedrius is the worst psycho boyfriend I've read in quite some time. But maybe, a little self-control could benefit Marianna. I'm not saying that in excuse of Den. I'm saying that as a fellow female. Get control of your crap.

This book is terrifying. Terrifyingly, terrifying. You will do well to recognize this is not a young adult book. The book covers topics that many new adults and adults struggle with bringing up. Don't try to read it all at once. It's a lot of serious stuff to take in at once.

I recommend this to the strong at heart. Cracked Coffins is a great book to start honest conversations about difficult subjects.

I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary advance copy of this book.

Trigger Warnings: Abuse, drug use, profanity, violence. Recommended for mature 17+ audience

Publication Date: 10/24/2020

I was sent an e-arc of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Cons
- language: there were lots of swear words, sometimes I felt like I was focused on all of those rather than the story.
- abuse: I understand that it’s in Den’s nature to kill (both as a vampire and as a Roman gladiator during his years as a human) but that doesn’t mean he has the right to physically and sexually abuse Marianna. I got the feeling that a lot of their relationship was not consensual, especially on Marianna’s part; I wish he would have truly taken her feelings into account instead of abusing her and saying it was love. That’s not love.

Pros:
- vampire tropes: This is not your typical vampire novel, which was refreshing. It’s darker, intricately woven, and has a great Roman gladiator influence. It also had a cat and mouse game with Marianna and Den that kept me on my toes.
-Den’s backstory and character: aside from what’s mentioned above, Den was my favorite character. I found his past as a gladiator to be very interesting and unique. I feel like there could be a whole novel dedicated to his backstory; that’s a story I would definitely read!

Overall, if this book didn’t have the abuse and language it would have gotten a higher rating; however, three’s a good middle ground! You can only go up from here! I also had Ben Barnes as Den and Makenzie Vega as Marianna in my head! If this novel is ever adapted for TV (definitely HBO material) I would love to see Ben and Makenzie play these characters!

These vampires don’t sparkle, they bite!

Have you ever had a book give you whiplash? Because I feel like this one did. Every time I started thinking to myself, “wait, maybe I was wrong!” I WAS PROVEN WRONG YET AGAIN! I went into this expecting a love story with vampires. And NOPE, it was not this! This was a heavy and graphic story about obsession and a really abusive relationship. And I couldn’t look away.

This is probably one of the most graphic books I’ve ever read. And that’s because it covered so many taboo topics. This is not the typical vampire story that I’ve come to know and expect. These vampires are mean and take pleasure in pain and are just as twisted as vampires are meant to be. Maybe even a little more. But I wouldn’t say that vampires were the main focus of this story. Having vampires was more of just a side note to all of the other dark and twisted topics (see the trigger warnings) riddled throughout.

This is not a book that you will be able to read in one sitting. I had to pace myself and take breaks from it. But even when I wasn’t actively reading it I was still thinking about it. Something about it stuck with me and made me want to read more even when I knew I needed a break. It’s a difficult story to get through and nothing is held back, but it’s still got that something that makes you finish.

Trigger warning: this book involves abuse, rape, drug use, and overdose. If you are a sensitive person I don’t think this book is the book for you.

Thank you to for sending me the book.

I can only categorize this book as a dark paranormal fantasy thriller. This book really gave me creeps.

So, Cracked Coffins follows the story of Marianna as she struggles with her life. At the eve of her seventeenth birthday she overdose and suddenly weird things started happening to her. Suddenly, Denendrius barged into her life and changed it forever.

Story wise I thought it was interesting. This book is unlike any other books I have ever read. I like how we can see the character struggling with drug use and how scary it is when your life is surrounded by drugs and gangs. I also like how it discusses and portrays how people struggle with mental health.

Character wise I have to say I'm not a big fan. How do I say this, I love the portrayal of mental and drug struggles of the character but, I am not attached to any of the characters.

Pacing wise, I think the pacing of this book is quite slow. It is not as fast as I would like but, it is still okay for me.

Nevertheless, I thought this book was an interesting read and I am kind of curious of what would happened next and just a suggestion I think there should be a trigger warning in the front page of the book because it was quite shocking for me.

Anyways have a good day everyone.

**Warning! This story IS NOT for the sensitive!! It contains profanity, mature themes, sexual violence, and general violence. It is recommended for a mature 17+ audience...seriously**

Woo! Let me start by saying I am reviewing as an ARC reader. This is classified as YA, but it's on the more mature end, border lining the Adult category.

Marianna is a troubled, newly seventeen year old foster child, who has had a rough life so far, to say the least. Nearly dying of an overdose, her life is soon turned upside down.

Denedrius is a bloodthirsty vampire, hell bent on finding Marianna and making her his after all these years.

What comes next is a twisted tale of abuse, deranged love, and hopes of escape. And a bad boy that's an actual bad boy. No, really. One you won't root for.....

Let me reiterate again...this book is not for the faint, or the sensitive. It deals with hard topics: drugs, domestic violence, gang violence, among others. The tone throughout is dark, with a splash of perfectly written humor here and there for balance. That being said, I enjoyed this hell of a ride! It is a page turner for sure. I could not put it down. The topics explored were done so tastefully, but written in a way to grab you by the bones. Tug at your heart strings. Make you want to reach through and smack Denedrius, and yell at Marianna to just leave already, lol.

I'm hoping there is a sequel!!!

Keep your eyes on this author. A hidden gem for sure.

Its the day before Marianna's seventeenth birthday but there's nothing to celebrate... Still in school, living in a foster home and fighting the urge to break a years drug sobriety, Marianna isn't your average teenager.
When she overdoses in the shed and recovers quickly she's confused and meeting a strange but attractive man on her birthday doesn't help.
Den asks her on a date and her friends won't let her say no... One date leads to another...Will he be the man of her dreams? Or not... There's something about him that's dark and she has seen glimpses of it.
The situation goes from bad to worse when she is held against her will...

This book was quite a surprise and very well done... The trauma and drug use may be sensitive for some but I found this to be thought provoking. These issues affect people everyday and for some are a reality so I'm glad its included in this story. It also shows brilliant character planning and I really believed in the stalker storyline.
The twisted and dark character of Denendrius with his delusions and temper seem to be written as if from real experience without the vampire part obviously.
I hate that this ended on a cliffhanger.. I need to know what happens.

Before you start this book please read carefully the trigger warnings.

I knew what I was getting into when I wanted to read this book. But holly shit I never expected all of this. BUT it was certainly a spooky Halloween read.
Beronika Keres created such a vivid book, one that kept me on my toes and made my breath hitch.
This is not a typical vampire story, heck it's not even a love story but it was a nice change from all the other books that feature a vampire .
Marianna is our main female lead, a girl on the wrong side of the track, with a past full of pain and a future uncertain.
From the beginning we see that she is not the usual type of MC, but a scarred girl that survived things no other kids should go through.
All is well and ok, until the male MC comes into the picture. Soon enough we see his true nature and the turn his relationship with Marianna takes. And let me tell you it's not a pretty one.
Den is a crazy bloodthirsty murderer, Marianna is a tough but crazy girl. And those two will take the story to a whole new level. I can say that I wasn't fond of Den or his attitude towards Marianna and as a result he was my least favorite character. So yeah he dragged the rating down.
The action was easy to follow, the writing style surprisingly clean with extremely vivid descriptions.

Let me start by saying this book is not for the ‘fair of heart’ or easily offended. Beronika’s story of abuse and trauma is unfiltered and unapologetic.
.
The protagonist is a teenager who’s been brutally abused by her mother and lost to a broken system, and then she meets him... At first his actions are subtle, just enough to make her pause and think. But the second she refuses to bend to his will his true colors show and by then it’s too late.
.
This novel is does a very good job of showing what that type of childhood trauma can do to a young person. And Beronika’s expertly crafted villain shows a reality too many people face in situations of domestic violence.
.
Control, manipulation, emotional games, none of these behaviors are romantic, they are dangerous. Finally someone isn’t afraid to showcase how dangerous!
.
The only reason I’m knocking off a star for this novel is due to some of the technical errors in the writing. There are consistency issues throughout the novel that made it at times very hard for me to follow what was happening. For instance: shes wearing shoes then she’s not, then her shoes are reference as being on her feet. She’s sitting at the table eating chicken nuggets with her siblings. But In the next sentence she’s making them lunch?

Those issues aside I still really enjoyed this novel and I’m looking forward to the next one!

I was provided with a free copy of this book by Booksirens, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

This book is something else. It isn't necessarily bad, but it wasn't what I thought it was going to be when I read the description. Yes, it talks about abuse and drug addiction and rape, and all the dark topics, but I felt awkward reading it. I honestly have no trouble reading about dark themes, but this was just something else.

The main character is 17-years old, which honestly weirded me out. If she was older then I would maybe like this book more. But she is 17 and was a part of a gang in the past apparently. There was just so much to unpack in the first 2 chapters and then it just went downhill.

The writing was good, but I felt like was reading multiple books at the same time and I had trouble following the story.

I really wanted to like this book and that is why I finished it, but it just wasn't for me and I won't be reading the sequel.

This book comes with a few trigger warnings that you should be aware of before deciding to read it (abuse, rape, drug addiction, overdose, …).

I read this in just two days, because it captured me from start to finish. I love that in the beginning, Denendrius could be your typical love interest, although the red flags already start shimmering through. It's like twilight, really, but this book does none of the romanticization. It portrays the stalking, the controlling, the gaslighting as what it is: abuse. And there is lots of abuse in this book, lots of trauma. I think it's so important that these topics are addressed in literature and it's even more important that Denendrius doesn't turn good, that he isn't "fixed". He was a violent, abusive creep throughout the whole book and everytime I thought there was some humanity shining through, he just did something worse. By the end, I wanted him dead as much as the protagonist did. I think it's great how the author managed to make him so hateable, how she made Marianna's pain and exhaustion feel so very real. And I really liked how the vampire isn't the hot brooding badboy love interest fore once. This novel was truly unique, I've already ordered book 2.

Well, well, well. This was a book that I had not been expecting at all.
This is a vampire book in a modern time setting.

This book is not classical vampire romance! I repeat not romance! Lovers (for a very short time) to enemies (literally).

Beware of the dark elements and warnings at the beginning of the book.
This book was very interesting for me. I really enjoyed it and it finished in a day. It is also a long book which I loved!

I am so vary of giving out spoilers because there are multiple plot twists and turns or everything in this book. You need to experience this on your own but you might want to read this one at night to give more darkish vampire vibes! I tried them both, trust me on this :)

I will summarize couple tropes for you so you can decide to read or not:
-Lovers to enemies (Age gap)
-Forbidden relationships (yeah multiple)
-Dark theme
-Abuse, sex, rape, gore, violance triggers
-Hot vampires and vampire lore

Do I need to tell you more? I don't think so because I know you will love it, like I did! DARK books are an addiction!

See you in the second book!

4.5
I was going into this book thinking I'll read a similar love story as we've seen in Twilight. Oh boy, was I wrong! I mean, you could say it was Twilight. The drugged, twisted and horrific sequel.
Marianna is a troubled teen who went through a lot in her life. From losing her parents to her foster mother selling her body when she was as young as 6 and poisoning her body with drugs. It was heartbreaking to read what she experienced at such a young age but we cannot forget that this happens in real life too and it must be stopped. But lets get back to the Cracked Coffins.
She was presented as a strong female protagonist but she could barely stand up for herself, especially keeping in mind that she was controlled by the vampire who desperately wanted her to love him.
Marianna might seem like a brat at first but after we see that that's her coping mechanism. She pushes people away so they cannot hurt her anymore.
Denendrius, the vampire 'boyfriend', at first glance a gallant man who just wants to take care of Marianna and give her everything she deserves. And then we see his dark, twisted side. Talk about men with power who think that beating and mistreating women will help them win their hearts.
For you to understand why Den was so after her you'd need to read a book. The truth about him is revealed in the middle of the story and I would not want to spoil it for you.
I honestly hated his character. I think that was the whole point but while reading I still hoped that he would change and they would actually be happy together. Ech to my broken dreams.
There is a sudden change just before the ending, which might be continued in the sequel. And me being a curious cat, I think I'll give it a go. Hopefully, it won't be as heartbreaking as the first book?
When I say there is a lot of violence in the plot - I mean it. It might be not suitable for everyone, especially the younger audience. Even though it is under the New Adult category.
But that's not the only reason I marked the story down. The writing reminds me more of a Young Adult book. Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying I did not like it but at some points, it wasn't suitable for some of the scenes.
If such topics as sexual harassment and assault is not a trigger for you, I'd really recommend reading Cracked Coffins. It might give you some food for thought as well as understand better people who might have similar experiences as the heroin.

If you're about to pick up this book because you think it's just another vampire story, think again. It is so much more than that. I would say it's more like a dark domestic thriller that just happens to have vampires in it. Vicious, mean vampires.

Denendrius is a vampire. A vampire who has set his sights on Marianna. He'll do anything to keep her. And I mean anything. He's narcissistic and just plain evil.

Marianna is an orphan and an ex junkie. She knows she only has one year before she ages out of the foster system and decides one more high won't kill her. But then she overdoses and Den comes to save her. And he makes sure she knows he saved her and will keep saving her because she belongs to him now.

There is no escape. Even death can't help her escape.

Oh boy what to say about this book. First of all the reader should pay heed to the trigger warnings of abuse, drug use, stalking, etc because it is no joke.

I could barely get through this book because of the very vague plot line as well as the intense content. This isn’t for the faint of heart, so buckle up if you do decide to continue.

Marianna was honestly a huge brat to me and I wasn’t a fan of her character. Den also is an awful person however that is his character, and there were times I agreed that Mari was pretty ungrateful and childish, no matter her past and mental issues.

I’m giving this a three only because the author has done a really good job writing about the trigger content, so that it is more honest and doesn’t romanticize the ideas.

Interesting read! I loved Marianna. She was a very strong MC—in all sense of the word. Well characterized, but also mentally resilient despite the horrors life threw her way. This is a story about an abused girl trapped in the cycle of abuse. This is not about romance. This is a survival story.

That being said, mind the content warnings. None of the content is extremely explicit or gratifying in its horror, but the narrative does not shy away from these topics.

At times, I felt the story was paced oddly, as if beats were not getting the attention they deserved, or it was hopping from one event to the next. However, I remained invested in Marianna’s story and needed to see how it would end for her. Unfortunately, it does leave on a bit of a cliffhanger, and all the threads have not been tied together BUT that’s all the more reason to be excited for the sequel releasing this year. I certainly have some theories I’d love to see come to fruition.

If you like dark fantasy and want to explore an abusive narrative with a strong female lead, I definitely would give Cracked Coffins a try.

Marianna survives an overdose but little did she know that the person who helped her becomes her worst nightmare.
After that her life changes forever as she finds herself stuck in an abusive relationship with a vampire, Den who is willing to do anything in his power to keep her.
This was probably the most dark and twisted book I have ever read so beware there were many trigger warnings that were sometimes very graphic and I found myself taking some little breaks from it.
Moreover, Cracked coffins not only explores the reality of abusive relationships but the overdose problems as well. The author wrote an amazing thriller and I'm so eager to see what will happen in the next book.

Trigger Warning: This novel isn't for the younger audiences. There are scenes of drug/ drug intake, abuse, rape, stalking, gangs .... read at your own discretion.

If you are looking for the perfect dark thriller mashed with vampires, Cracked Coffins by Beronika Keres, might just be the book for you. Following our main lead, a 17 year old girl named Marianna, we follow as her life continues to be filled with horrifying events. This book really isn't for the faint of heart, but if you decide that the trigger warning are alright for you, well then you're in for quite a ride!

Marianna is trying to get away from the life she lives that's full of drugs and bad choices. When she meets a man called Denedrius (Den), she thinks she's found a life that can be normal. Unfortunately, Den isn't the man she thought he was.

This was a surprisingly great read. I was expecting a basic vampire/human romance, and this isn't that. Marianna isn't falling in love with some sweet vampire who wants to be like humans.

The writing needed a little work. The way things were phrased and how scenes were set up were on the beginner side of writing. But the plot made up for that and we still got a great story.
