From Start to Finnish: A Short Course in Finnish

Rate this book
From Start to Finnish - A Short Course in Finnish is practical, fun and easy to read.

Instead of covering all aspects of Finnish language, From Start to Finnish will serve as a handy survival kit for everyday situations, such as asking questions and responding to them, exchanging small talk face-to-face with real Finns, being polite - or less polite if need be.
It will also give you an overall picture of the structure of Finnish, a language which is certainly different from many others you may have studied so far - but not difficult, as you are about to find out!

The book is illustrated with still photographs from famous Finnish films.

The dialogues, texts and a couple of exercises have been recorded for each chapter. The audio material is available in a CD form for you to listen to the sound of Finnish and practice your own pronunciation. The CD is sold separately.

The book is written in English and teaches a more advanced level of Finnish. This would be the next step after Leila White's "From start to Finnish". Unlike that book, "A Grammar Book of Finnish" has no pictures. No exercises in this book, either. Just Finnish grammar in black and white ink, from inside cover to inside cover. She'll explain a Finnish grammar law and give examples in the form of sentences. Every example has a Finnish and English translation. Very pragmatic book.

I feel weird rating a reference book but 3 stars seems appropriate. This has been very useful lately, and I like the large number of examples used to back up the new grammar (of which there is A LOT in Finnish).
