Great resource for chronic pain (CP) sufferers and mental health clinicians who work with CP.
The author is (un declared but obviously) highly influenced by Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT).
I did not know this when I bought this book, but I was very pleasantly surprised to discover this as I read.
ACT is a mindfulness-based variant of cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and it’s a perfect framework for working with CP.
The author, Dr. Evan Parks educates to the neurobiology of pain, positing that pain perception and actual injury do not necessarily have a one to one relationship.
Furthermore, Dr. Parks asserts that (a) focusing on the pain, and (b) withdrawing from physical activities leads to becoming deconditioned (getting out of shape) and ends up worsening condition in the long run.
Additionally, analgesic (pain killer) medications elicit hyperalgesia (pain sensitivity) in the long term.
So they’re not a solution either.
Dr. Parks recommends mindfully arriving in the present moment, focusing away from the pain, with self compassion and acceptance, and redirecting focus and commitment towards values congruent activities and (of course) regular exercise.
I am getting a better understanding of pain by reading and studying this book. I hope through careful study and application that I too can find relief from my chronic pain. Dr. Evan's breaks everything down so that it is easy to understand and apply what he is telling the reader. I recommend this book to anyone suffering with chronic pain.
Excellent book that teaches the mechanisms of chronic pain in the body as well as effective techniques to manage that pain and move away from it towards a fuller life.
I'm a physical therapist assistant and I have learned a lot of pain management strategies for my patients but this book has given me practical ways to approach patients with chronic pain that I've been struggling with for years. This is a great resource to have for educating your patients if you are in the medical field. Many thanks to the author!
This book was recommended to me to help me with my chronic pain and it was the reminder I needed. I am a big fan of ACT, and it reminded me how I contribute to exacerbating my own discomfort through focus and can also dig into some of the techniques we know can help.
